Default Casey wants DeRozan to set the defensive tone

Quote:
“I think he wants to be a better defender, I think he is becoming a better defender,” Casey said. “That’s our challenge to him, to be a better defender, to guard the best two-guards in the league. That’s the most important thing, is picking it up on the defensive end. … He has the quick feet, quick hands, athletic ability to go up and contest shots. There is no reason he should not be able to be an elite defender.”

DeRozan has gotten the message—now, it is up to him to execute. “Definitely, there is more of a passion on the defensive end,” DeRozan said. “We hear it from all of the coaching staff, really pushing us to be the type of team that leaves our mark on the defensive end. I think it is going to pay off in the end for us. He just has guys buying in on the defensive end, with the understanding that you can’t win games without the team executing defensive schemes. The more we buy into it, the more we get a chance to play and practice, we are going to get a lot better at it.”

He also said this:

Quote:
The prospect of DeRozan adding to his game and turning into a star might be both pleasant and fearsome for Raptors fans, who have seen a parade of stars leave town in the last dozen years—Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, Bosh—but as tumultuous as his first few years have been, he is not looking to change addresses.

“I am definitely happy in Toronto,” he said. “Really, Toronto is a great city, it is not like it is a small market or whatever. I want to be here and give Toronto what they haven’t had in a while—I think it means a lot more to me to be there and trying to be with some big-market team. I think once we get going and get where we need to be, the accomplishment will be that much greater for myself and the franchise.”

I like this. Derozan came into the league with a bit of a edge which has somewhat been lacking. I would love to see him get after people and get physical right off the tip, it would probably help ignite his offense as well as establish himself as the leader of this team. I hope Casey sees this through.

The one thing that I will never understand is why players need to be CONVINCED that playing tough D every time out is necessary in order to be a good team.

You expect that if you're coaching a high school team.

You don't expect that (at least I don't) from NBA pros.

This is because hard D at an NBA level is hard to come by. not everyone can, and not everyone won't because they won't have it left in them to do their "offensive w/e" so you need the coach there. with each level up, your skills have to go up. not everyone does that on both ends.

Jesus.

Finally a young player says what I have been longing to hear for years. A desire to make his own team win, to accomplish something on his own and not just bolt to win easily.

Can't ask for more from him at this point. Now I just hope he can keep this way of thinking as the years go on and not get impatient. I mean I look at Bosh and his impatience, shit, had he stayed, and this all rolls out the same.... you probably would have turned one of those PF's into a 3 guard..... Casey comes in, all of a sudden this team is contending.

Patience.

DD is a good person .... He is a keeper ... Hopefully he can become a stud on the defensive end of the court.

casey needs to tone it down a little with his expectations. i'm all for our defensive improvements, building a solid team defence and getting our players to hustle for every possession, but he needs a little range to what he's going to be talking about. maybe it's all the false promises we hear from jay the past couple of seasons on how we're going to improve, but dude, casey's hitting this shit non-stop head-on with a mac truck.

I love what he's saying and I'm loving what I see so far. I think this schedule will lead to injuries and things will likely then go off the rails a little. But as long as they give the effort I'm a happy camper.

so am i. there's no one who wants to see our team play defence more than myself. i just don't like the overwhelming reminder of why casey is here. i know he's just answering questions, but grading our defensive performances doesn't sit well with me. it just seems to me that he's going to corner himself with these demands he's making. the last thing i want to see is kevin o'neill style basketball to make it as if he followed thru on his promises.

he's very professional, but i think he needs to break away from it for a moment and be sam mitchell before the media gets the better of him.

I think Casey mentality, tone and direction for this team are perfect. He is trying to change the culture of a team, to create core unit that puts defense first. We all wanted accountability, and now he should tone it down because he is being perceived as tyrant, etc. Derozan deserved to get called out, he consistently loses his man. The pacers built their lead on derozan's back in the first and second qrt. George went 3 for 3 from 3pt line in the first qrt.

He isn't being called out, or being asked for more effort. He's being asked to set a tone. This is about leadership and improvement. It's a compliment.

i think you're misinterpreting what i'm saying. all that i'm getting at is that i don't think casey is handling the media well. i want him to hold every single player accountable for every single play that happens out on the court, i want him to bash heads, i want him kicking asses, but he's making his own bed by the way he's dealing with the media.

I did hear him temper his talk by saying that changes might not lead to wins right away. That was good. He needs more of that. But in any case the most important thing is having BC have his back until the right players are brought in.

I interpreted the first paragraph differently then you. The tone to me says "your defense is lacking, and there is no excuse for it". Which I agree with. I don't see how saying you have the skills to be elite defender is anything but back handed compliment. I am not saying its being said with any malice, and maybe being called out is a bit exaggerated. But he is and has under achieved on the defensive end.

+1 It's not so much a backhanded compliment as much as an intention to make demar realize the importance of defending given he has the physical tools to be a dominant defender. It's almost as if this team has never had anyone demand that defending be a priority.
