Raptors Casey Should Be An Assistant Coach

All year I've looked at Casey with torn judgement. He's a good defensive coach and made our team have an incredible turn around in that regard. He also gets our guys to play hard, something that at least makes Raptor games enjoyable, but other than that he has little else to offer.

Our team on the offensive end has been horrible all season, we've only had a hand full of games were we went over 100 points. Our calling card this year was how we always collapse in the fourth, simply because we can't create enough offence to finish out games.

Player development leaves much to be desired. Aside from James Johnson and possibly Calderon (I think he's only playing better because he's finally healthy), none of our players have developed what so ever. I would include Bargnani but after his injury he turned back to his same old self. Ed Davis has regressed because he's barely getting play. Bayless has shown flashes but injuries as well as limited play have held him back. Don't get me started about Demar, who was supposed to break out this year. In a rebuilding year where we were supposed to develop our players, we simply haven't.

Finally the thing that annoys me the most is his decision making on substitutions and rotations. Subbing Butler in when he hasn't played in clutch situations, electing to play scrubs instead of our core players, having Jamal in the game in a foul situation, having Butler touch the court, and worst part of all he never goes with the hot hand as evidently proven today when he subbed out Ed Davis and our team just collapsed. There are so many more examples of his horrible decision making that don't immediately come to mind.

I know I'm in the dark here because many of you seem to really like Casey but I think he would be better suited as an assistant coach. He would coordinate defence, and we would have another coach to do the other things. That being said I can't think of a head coach readily available to replace Casey but possibly next year as I'm sure Casey's flaws will be more evident with a group with higher expectations. Maybe Stan Van Gundy if he leaves Orlando. Either way the point is Casey is better suited as an assistant.

Take a good long look at our team. Then take into account that our best offensive player has missed 1/3 of our games......and tell me you seriously expected this team to be an offensive juggernaut. The fact that we're going to end up in the 20-23 win area tells me this guy is a mircale worker.

Last I checked we have pretty much the exact same team as last year. Bargani was injuried last year too was he not. I don't remember any problems scoring.

I really disagree, sure Casey might not be experienced as a head coach, but he is still doing a mind blowing job.

Thats due to lack of talent not system. Its hard to judge our offence because we just have a lack of offensive players to be honest.

Caseys only downsides this year are his questionable substitutions late in games and IMO his use of Ed Davis. His substitutions with Butler and a few of his other late game decision speak for themselves, but playing Davis LESS than last year in a development year for the team is just god awful.

But overall hes been very good. I hated Mitchell. I hated Triano. I hated Oneill. I like Casey. Hes a keeper. Give him time to grow as a head coach, as he has probably the 2 most important aspects of coaching in the NBA down so far from a fundamental aspect as you mentioned: His players like him and play hard for him, and hes a great defensive coach. He'll improve the other aspects with more experience just like any young player in the NBA, coaches need time too.

Probably because we only worried about scoring and didn't play defense. If you think Casey is no better than an assistant coach i simply don't know what to tell you other than i think you're way off. And to judge this guy on offense is asinine. The thing is we'll add offense this summer and a defensinve system/mindset is now in place with our younger players. This team is in most games and many of them they have no business being in, tonight was a perfect example.

Tbh, all teams are down in scoring this year cuz of the shortened season issues. I mean Phoenix was averaging something like 115 ppg last year, werent they?

And i wouldn't say that we have trouble of scoring pts. sure we don't score so much now, but we are playing with players from the Dleague + this crazy season every team in the league is scoring less

sorry but Casey should be an assistant ?...seriously ?

at the beginning of the year i predicted this team would win between 7-9 games...and with the SERIOUS lack of talent on this crappy team, i still feel that was a realistic number...but i didn't figure on the MAJOR difference Casey would bring to this club full of hacks

if MLSE doesn't renew/extend Casey's contract immediately then there is something fundamentally wrong with this organization

Casey IS and WILL BE a head coach for a long time in this league...now if we can just find him a decent tailor and a good razor

You can't make shit shine.

Plus, the fact that he's taken pretty much the same team as last year, which was one of the worst defensive teams in the history of the NBA and made them respectable on that end of the court, speaks volumes about his abilities as a coach.

Give him more talent, an offseason where he and his staff can communicate with the players, a full training camp and a season where they can actually have a normal practice schedule and things will definitely be on the up and up.

To be fair 7-9 was a stretch (on the low side imo). lol

But really, when was the last time we had a halfway decent defensive team that simply played hard and grinded games out. This season was about changing the culture and mindset of this young team.........mission accomplished in spades. Now lets add some talent this summer and start moving upward.

I think a lot of the problems with the offense early in the season found solutions, and before the arrival of Bargnani. I like what he's done with the offense - a ton. He looks for good execution more than he looks to one guy trying doing too much. He looks for players to fill their roles properly. And mostly he looks to not have their defense pay for bad shots missed.

Now they have a bunch of 10-days and guys on the end of the bench, so it's not always pretty. But they still look pretty competitive. Balance out this roster just a bit and I'd think the difference would be very big. And the prognosis would point towards long-term success - something we've never had a sniff at here, largely due to Casey's points of emphasis not being the sorts of things that took root.

If Casey doesn't figure out how to help develop players than were going to be the bobcats of a few years ago. We'll always be in games solely based on our defense but without any stars to lift us passed the hump. Think about it Jonas coming in is not going to be an offensive player, he may never be. Bargnani is the only one that can score in our system. No players in this draft are just going to come in and just be a bona fide scorer. Casey needs to learn how to run offensive system and develop players or else every year following this will be a year of unmet expectations.

I'm not the least bit worried about our offense. I have confidence that side of the court will be upgraded this summer. We finally have a team that plays hard on defense and winning starts there.

Top tier coaches don't want to coach under Collangelo, not in a million years.

The organization should be able to do better than Casey with B.C. gone.

I agree with Blaze

I'm impressed with Casey, I was expecting consistent 20 + point blowouts every game but the team is competitive more often than not even with D leaguers on the team and Bargs missing a large chunk of games.

A lot of people have very unreal expectations regarding Casey and are expecting an immediate turnaround because he won a championship in Dallas. Give the man some time to put his mark on this team and hopefully we'll also get a talent upgrade to add to this team.

Casey could of had that key call reversed today...I can't even remember what it was now...but the officials were going to talk about it and he just yelled at Brothers the way Casey always yells at officials and Brothers just looked pissed and disgusted and walked away from the other official without even discussing it.

Happens all the time with Casey. Worst coach in the NBA at working officials.
