Default Casey says he told team to foul when leading by 3 at the end of regulation

Quote:
Its a great debate in NBA circles, and its one that makes for interesting conversation while breaking down what-if scenarios after the fact.

To foul or not to foul, when leading by three and the other team has possession of the ball in the games final seconds?

The Raptors were faced with this dilemma Friday night against the Lakers, leading 109-106 with L.A. inbounding the ball and 8.4 seconds remaining.

Kobe Bryant had just knocked down two extremely difficult looks from three-point distance to even get his team to this point, and Raptors head coach Dwane Casey knew that Bryant would likely be the one to get the ball and attempt to tie the game with one more heroic shot.

Caseys instructions to his team were clear. The execution, however, left something to be desired.

We were going to foul, Casey said afterward. To answer your question, we were going to foul. We were supposed to foul; we were instructed to foul. Two guys froze I dont know what happened, but we were going to foul. That was our game plan at eight seconds, no question about it.

Bryant weaved his way through the defense to catch the ball, and once he did, Amir Johnson went for the pump fake, which left Bryant open to nail the game-tying shot. Johnson might have tried to reach out and commit the foul after he flew by Bryant, but by then he was too far out of position.

He made a cut, I tried to foul him, but he made a good play, Johnson said. I missed him and he made a tough shot. Especially when were up three, we wanted to make him shoot free throws.

The debate will rage on, but in practice the strategy is a difficult one to pull off. Players have to be cautious not to foul a player as hes getting into his shooting motion, because a four-point play in that situation would spell disaster.

It was clear in this case that the players and their coach were on the same page in terms of what the plan was. But plans tend to change when one of the games best players has the ball in his hands with the game hanging in the balance.

Demar and Amir and Lowry all backed it up.

They executed so well in the coverage on the inbounds pass to the point where LA needed to call a timeout. And even on this inbounds Amir in particular did a nice job of trying to deny the pass to Kobe. And then Gay stood and watched, his feet frozen. It really sucks that Amir was questioned about it at all, as though he had somehow failed. He did his job.

I have a question.. Can't you deliberately push kobe hard enough off the ball before he catches the ball to send him to the line when we're over the foul limit? Or would that be a intentional foul giving la a ft and possession?

To foul someone they need to have the ball in their hands, otherwise it's shots + possession.

I believe that applies in the last 2 mins of each quarter or something.

That's how you earn big minutes in Raptors. You suck - play entire 4th and overtime. You play extremely well during your 17 minutes - you get benched for the last 30 minutes of game. You grab ZERO rebounds in 33 minutes - you earn a permanent starting position... Fuck you Casey, F.U.C.K. Y.O.U.

Edit: when was the last time Gay went to the basket where he has a high %? Probably 259 long jump shots ago... And yeah, if player doesn't know what are his strong sides then coach must tell him. Of course, if coach is not @ an elementary basketball team level

That's nice strategy and all, but where Kobe caught the ball, if they tried fouling, it would have been a 3 shot foul, with potential for a 4 point play. They should have made someone else catch the ball, and then ride Kobe to deny him the ball, then if he caught it far out, foul him, or double him. His catch was too easy, and that's on Rudy and Amir. And then Rudy for standing and watching like LX said after the pump fake.

i think you're right, if i'm correct it was changed to this because teams would hack a shaq by pushing shaq during the inbounds
