Default Casey now the longest-tenured pro coach in TO

Quote:
With John Farrell now helming the Boston Red Sox, Dwane Casey, hired just 16 months ago, is the longest-tenured head coach of Toronto’s major sporting outfits.

But he doesn’t see any great achievement in his new standing and hopes that it will be something mentioned years down the line instead of so soon into his time with the Raptors.

“I haven’t thought about that, hopefully I’m here for a while because we’ve got something good that’s growing,” Casey said after practice on Sunday.

“I hope I’m here a long time but you never know in coaching ... We’re nowhere near where we need to be, we’re still a very young team, but we’ve got some good, positive pieces in the right place right now and just want to keep watering them and watch them grow.”

The Raptors wisely picked up Casey’s option for the 2013-14 season just days after the 2011-12 campaign — one which saw him completely turn around the team’s defence — came to a close.

Well-regarded around the league and with a championship ring from Dallas on his resume, Casey won’t be joining Farrell, Ron Wilson, Aron Winter, Jim Barker, or anybody else on the unemployment line or in a new gig anytime soon.

You are mistaken...

Bobby Lou is the most overrated goaltender in the NHL, who has failed miserably when the games matter.

Leafs problems start from Management down to Players, just too much of a mess.

Raptors > Leafs > Jays

In terms of playoff chances, and the reason I put the leafs ahead of the Jays is only because 16 teams as oppose to 10 make it for the NHL. So you could be relatively crap, and still make the playoffs. That doesn't happen in the MLB.

Really? A non playoff team giving up some of their better young talent and a draft pick (from what i've heard?) for an aging goaltender with a bad contract makes them what exactly?

In all honesty the Leafs are probably not any further than the Raptors in becoming a playoff team (both probably in the same area). The Jays ultimately have the most talent of all three teams, but they ran into a crapload of injuries in a league where there is very little margin for error in trying to make the playoffs so they have now probably been set back a couple years unless they spend 20-30mil this off season and spend it wisely.

Basketball imo is a lot easier to turn things around in a rebuild than hockey is. Much smaller roster, more flexibility with a soft cap. A couple good draft picks and a couple decent signings can get you back into the mix. With hockey you're looking at a much larger roster and it simply takes a lot longer to rebuild. Look at the Raptors, Bosh left two years ago and they're now looking at competing for a playoff spot. How long has Burke been here since he started rebuilding/dismantling the team...4yrs? Are the Raptors further along or roughly at the same level after 2yrs of rebuilding as the Leafs are after 4yrs under Burke?

So while the level of talent is probably roughly the same between the Leafs and Raptors one is closer to doing something in the nearer future and imo that's the Raptors. Now if the Leafs trade for Luongo and then make a significant move to land a top offensive talent that probably puts them ahead of the Raptors unless the Raptors can add a significant upgrade at the SF position (ie: Gay type of player).

So imo, between the Leafs and Raptors it's all going to come down to which team can add the right next 2-3 players that takes them into another level as a bonified playoff team and how quickly their current prospects develop. The Raptors imo have a prospect that can be a game changer in Valanciunas, do the leafs have that? And if so, will they have to deal one or more of those prospects to get Luongo?

Leafs were the only team to not make the playoffs in between the last NHL lockout and the current one.

Teams in the East are getting better while the Leafs are stagnant.

Also the Raptors are actually playing where as the Leafs probably will miss an entire season.

lol

I remember in 2009 when BC went crazy in the summer and added talent most were saying the Raptors were closer and that fell apart b/c of Bosh's injuries and he left. Last two years most here were saying the Leafs were closer yet their hyped goaltenders failed and they again missed the playoffs both seasons and yes, for the most part seem to be stagnant. This spring everyone was all over the Jays saying they were our only hope in a hopeless sports city and look at what happened. Now, the Raptors have added a bit of talent and are deemed to be closest to making some noise. You know what that tells me? It tells me we should calm the fuck down and see what happens because one thing i can say about the sports teams in this city is, the more things change the more they stay the same.

even though a single player on a bball roster can make more of a difference to the overall team success i think its easier for a hockey team to change their fortunes

obviously good players are good players and bad players are bad players but on the ice the gap in skill level making an obvious difference is not as wide as the nba
all it takes is for a bad hockey team to catch 1 or 2 breaks in a game where a person shoots the puck wide or something like that for a bad team to win or lose, meaning any given night either team has a good chance of winning, just considering the score of a game is usually about a few goals per team
but in bball it takes a whole lot of breaks for a bad team to win against a good team as the score can vary 20-30 points pretty quickly

The Raptors are the only team not to screw around with draft picks, and who are actualy building through youth and prospects.

The leafs made that terrible trade for Kessel, and they have no good young talent..Kadri lol? Biggest bust ever.. Now they want to add an aging goalie to put them over the hump.

The jays actually have a decent young core, and some really good pieces but making the playoffs in baseball is probably the most difficult.

The Raptors have solid young talent through draft (Val, Ross, Derozan, Bargn) and they just traded for a relatively young point guard who's pretty damn good.

I've been telling this over and over to all my buddies in TO who are huge leaf fans...The Raptors will win a lot of Toronto sports fans this year with no hockey.

In all honesty i've always found that most leaf fans have always been more optomistic about the Leafs no matter what and more skeptical about the Raptors (almost dismissive at times) even if they say they're a fan of both. There's a bit of a double standard, at least that's what i've always found. Same goes with media.

Last time there was an NHL lockout we had a very poor season, I believe it was the year we traded Vince or the year right after that. It was the 04-05 season.

This team is going win a lot of hearts man, telling ya
