Raptors Casey not sold on Ross starting

I'm guessing he's just not wanting Ross to get too comfortable or relax.

Starting Spot Isn’t Secure For Terrence Ross

December 13, 2013

Terrence Ross was recently put in Toronto’s starting unit after Rudy Gay was traded to Sacramento and he responded tonight by scoring 24 points in 33 minutes while going 10-16 from the field.

The scoring burst represent the second highest scoring output of his NBA career and he has provided glimpses over the past week of being a player that can start on a consistent basis in the league.

While the scoring burst was a big reason why Toronto escaped with a win, his head coach, Dwane Casey, was hesitant to lock him into a role as a starter moving forward.

“He’s got to keep it going,” Casey told a reporter after the game. “We’ve got a lot of people (that can start for us). John Salmons is a veteran guy. We’ve still got Landry (Fields) in there.

“Ross played well tonight but now he has to continue it. That’s his biggest challenge as a young player in this league is to stay hungry, to stay driven and to stay consistent. I just told him a few minutes ago that he’s got the Bulls tomorrow night.”

Instead of hanging his head after hearing what his coach said or puffing up his chest after a big game, to his credit, Ross was quick to embrace the fact he needs to focus more on the court and be consistent.

When he was asked about his confidence, Ross was quick to point out he needs to work on his focus during games.

“My confidence is good, but the main thing is keeping my focus so I can play at this level,” Ross admitted to me. “I’m just trying to know my job, know my role and make sure we have the chemistry going on the court.”

It looks like the starting spot is Ross’ for the time being, but it’s far from secure. If he goes into a funk where he stops playing hard at both ends or shows stretches where he isn’t focused, look for Salmons or Fields to sneak in the starting line-up.

Casey could be one of the worst coaches for young players. He is coming into Larry Brown status.

Let him play and see if he is a keeper or not. That is what this whole season is about, setting up our future. If Ross and Val prove they are keepers and future starters then this season's rollercoaster will be worth it. I have been fearing this whole season that Casey will care more about winning and keeping his job and from the sounds of it he is.

Yeah, that sounds like motivational bit. Very similar to that offseason interview where Casey said that Ross has to want it and has to work hard (or something along those lines).

Clearly Casey wants to make him to develop consistent effort level and earn his minutes, which is fine with me. Ross isn't a Kenneth Faried or Avery Bradley, who expend all their energy in every game.

so far so good with Ross this season. The more he can feel there is competition the better. He drained a pretty clutch 3 last night which showed me his mental game is making some good strides.

I have no problem with DC and the way he treats Ross. TR should be hungry and focused, he needs to know that he can't stay too comfortable and has to improve as we move along.

Agreed. IF Ross can get the consistency and hunger into his game, the DeRozan/Ross wing combo will create big problems for opponents to defend. I'm crossing my fingers, toes & eyes.

Casey's an idiot because of jeff's poorly worded title?

Jeff's an idiot for copying and pasting some idiot's poorly worded title from RealGM?

I am no fan of Casey and his unfathomable rotations, minutes allotment, inbound plays, clock management, but there is a little person on my shoulder whispering in my ear that Casey's decisions and calls may get a major upgrade now that he has a much improved and deeper roster because of the trade. If that happens, don't be calling your bookmaker to wager against him getting an extension. And I do not like the job he's done since his first year.

Ross shouldn't start because DeMar can't handle some small forwards, but generally I think that Casey is a dipshit and tank or no tank I want him gone asap.

Ross has been starting at SF, makes sense with his length and ability to defend. I think that it depends on the opposing team's lineup. For instance, if Deng is out tonight i would expect Ross to start at SG and defend Butler while Derozan could stick to Dunleavy. If they both start i think i'd still be inclined to put Ross on Butler since he's a little quicker than Deng.

I'm loving his progression. It seems like when one rookie is doing well, the other is nowhere to be found. Last season was all Jonas. Hopefully they'll both start bringing it

People here love to criticize Casey at any opportunity.

I see nothing wrong with what he said; as long as Terrence stays hungry and plays at a high level he will keep starting.

& Jeff made it clear with the first post. Casey doesn't want him to relax and get too comfortable.

Yeah, i don't think it's anything more than a coach saying "don't get comfortable, we have other players that can start ahead of you". He needs to know it's not a given that he starts.

edit: sorry Thug, didn't see your edit.

While nothing is wrong with Casey says here, it's what's expected to come. This basically Casey saying that Ross is on a short leash, and should he mess up, he'll get less minutes. While they're isn't anything necessarily wrong with that, with young players you have to be more lenient when they make mistakes. Casey is not, and expects his young players to play like instant veterans when they've yet to learn to play like they're expected. And how does one learn to play like that? By getting minutes and being able to play through mistakes.

It isn't about mistakes. The leash will be for lack of effort and not competing. The mistakes happen with every player. The effort and aggressive playing need to be there.

Yep. And that's exactly what the leash SHOULD be for. Nothing wrong with that.

That's what it should be for, but isn't with Casey. Val plays hard a lot of the time and still gets yanked...
