Casey Aims To Make Toronto An Attractive Destination For NBA Players

Quote:

Raptors fans have watched players such as Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby, Vince Carter, and Chris Bosh leave for greener pastures, leaving the franchise barren of stars. While DeRozan, Davis, and Bargnani make up a young, talented core, the team desperately needs direction.

ďThe misnomer that you are in Canada and not in the States is totally misplaced,íí new coach Dwane Casey. ďBecause itís a great sports city. I canít imagine if you turn the program around how exciting it would be. Itís a melting pot for anybody. But a lot of times players just come there in the dead of winter and donít really get a taste of the city. Thatís one thing thatís going to be our mission, is to try to change that image and go back to my recruiting days at Kentucky, and try to recruit.íí

that's nice. However, i'd say the only way Toronto ever shakes this 'unappealing' as a destination label is by winning. That's it. Nobody wants to stay and play for a loser.

And look at all those players that left: they all left when this team was a loser (also what does that tell you about their abilities to lead a team as franchise players?). We can actually debate that we've never had a real keeper. In hindsight, Tmac was probably the best player to lace em up, but who really cares.

that is a young, talented core.... if they can add to it, could get exciting.

jeffb 07-17-2011 03:39 PM

That will be tough. Hell even the hockey team has trouble signiing big time FA.

Tommy C 07-17-2011 03:46 PM

Good Luck....

Because the teams suck.

Get better and players will come here.

Tough to debate that (that we've never had a keeper) IMO.... we've definitely had all-stars... just have never really had a solid team around them.

The one exception was when we had Vince and Tracy here a the supporting cast wasn't too bad. THAT team could have been something.... but T-Mac fucked it up because he wanted to "be the man". Bet he wishes he swallowed his pride a bit now eh?

man he says all the right things. i just hope he can walk the walk just like he can talk the talk

Someguy again 07-17-2011 07:42 PM

if he can get players to kentucky which holds the stereotype of racism throughout the schools history, then im happy

The part of the article in the OP is just more of the usual stereotyping and some throwaway quote. Casey is not going to recruit anyone like they do in College. If that is why he was bought here then we're fucked, but it's not. He coached college decades ago. His whole emphasis is going to lie in changing things here among pros. Here's the only thing that was worth reading for me:

Quote:

The Raptors were 26th in points allowed and 29th in field goal percentage last season. So Casey has an arduous task to fix a franchise that has lacked defensive urgency.

“It’s just something you have to emphasize,’’ Casey said. “It’s something we’ll preach, make time for, we’ll follow through with it, hold guys accountable. It’s going to be part of our practice plan more than guys will like . . . it’s gotta be because any time you are last in the league in defense, and you lose 60 games, something’s gotta change and change quickly. And that’s going to be our approach. It’s not only a changing-the-culture situation but a teaching situation because the team is so young.’’

I am guessing the climte in Boston, New York, Philidelphia aint that much different from Toronto.

Toronto is not the only team with problems getting big names to come to them. How about GOlden State, LAC, Minny, MIlwakee.

There are allot of teams in the same boat.

There are about 20 teams imo that are not considered that desireable.
