Thumbs up Canada Wins Junior Men's Tourney

Quote:
DOUAI, FR. – Canada's Junior Men finished in first place at the 23rd Annual Mondial Juniors de Basket, one of Europe's premier basketball tournaments. Canada had two big wins over France and Puerto Rico, following a loss to Australia on the first day. A strong win today coupled with USA’s win over host team France, guaranteed the title for the red and white.

"Our guys really played hard throughout the tournament," said Greg Francis, Head Coach for the Junior Men's National Team and the National Elite Development Academy (NEDA). "This is such a great win for our team and the experience of playing tough countries outside our zone will go a long way in helping our guys prepare for the FIBA World Championship next month."

Along with the first place hardware, Canadian forward, Kelly Olynyk also earned two trophies, for All-Star forward and tournament MVP. The Kamloops, B.C. native also plays under Francis as a member of Canada Basketball's National Elite Development Academy (NEDA) program.

After a tough loss on Saturday to USA (92-83), Canada came out and conquered as the team successfully beat Lithuania 86-78 to close out the event. With a 3-2 record overall, Canada won the championship of this prestigious European event that has seen the likes of Tony Parker, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Luol Deng and Andrei Kirilenko to name a few.

Tristan played for the U.S.? What a sellout!

Dude's going to be a star either way, hopefully he'll rep us when he's playing in the big show.

Earlier, Canada lost 92-83 to the 2K Sports All-American team that included two young Canadian stars, Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph. It is quite bizarre that the two players who probably would be Canada's best, played against Team Canada.

Joseph says Canada Basketball didn't approach them about playing until after they had committed to the 2K squad, a team of players expected to be the best high schools players in the U.S. next season (Thompson and Joseph play for a prep school in Nevada).

Both intend to play for Canada at the upcoming Under-19 World Championships in Auckland NZ July 2-12.

"This was Canada’s first time participating in the Mondial Juniors de Basket"

Canada's team at the Under-19 is expected to be its best ever. Thompson is currently ranked either 1, 2, or 3 in his high school class, and has already committed to the powerful Texas program that produced Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge, among many others.

Francis says he doesn't have a problem with Thompson, Joseph or others playing for all-star teams instead of Canada as long as they suit up for Canada at important tournaments, like the one next month.

Last year, Thompson played with the Canadian National Team in Argentina, helping his country qualify for the Worlds; and two years ago, Joseph played with them in the World Championships in Serbia.

“Those guys are such good kids,” says Greg Francis, head coach of the Canadian National Team. “They’re so good, they make you look like a good coach. Lots of top players have options, and at the end of the day, they end up playing for their country in the key moments. And that moment for us is the World Championships.”

Fair enough. Nice find.

It's weird seeing a guy you played ball with getting all this attention.

Courtside - Congrats to Team Canada for winning French tourney ... why were its two best players playing for an All-American side?
