Raptors Can James Johnson become a poor man's Marion?

Quote:
Prediction Johnson will emerge as a favourite of Casey, who will take the lessons he learned coaching an aging Shawn Marion and turn Johnson into a poor man’s version of the former all-star.

i really like JJ. but can he be an all-star cliber ?
he would have to be better than lebron, pierce, anthony... but to be honest if he can score between 14-17pts, make 8 rbds and 2blk a game, he would be an all-star to me. a sf who can defend, he will be what we need !

I think he could be a rich man's Marion if he works at it, his shot is already better than Marion's ever was.

how poor are we talking about?

silly to think Casey is going to mold his current players into his former ones.
Dirk = Bargs and JJ = Marion
very soon we're going to hear about how DeRozan will be the next Terry

I would be very surprised if he avg 8 pts. The only thing he needs to do is not turn the ball over. If he does that and plays defense, we're good.

It is getting a little old hearing comparisons to the Mavs. Bargnani is like Dirk. He has referred to Bayless' role as similar to Terry's, and now we get this. Expectations really need to be managed a little more at this point, although for the players it's probably an ok thing, so to hell with managing our expectations. Poor man's championship here we come.

I see him becoming more versatile then Marion ( Marion was poor passer all his career). Not as great offense but he can pass and he could be better on defense. I would say AK47 in his prime could be better example... 5x5 threat. If he gets 12pts/7reb,3ast/2stl/2blk average...I would be happy with that.

more like marion being a poor mans james johnson lol, but ye i think the dude would serve as well if he even avg 12 pts, but has numbers across the stat line, something i think he can do, and very defensive minded

It all depends on the minutes. If he can get that in 20 MPG (which neither he, nor anyone else in the league is bound to do), I'd be tripping-over-myself happy. He's unlikely to play more than 25 minutes per, though, and I doubt he can top 8pts/5rebs/2asts/1stl/1block - which would still be a very decent game. If most of his energy goes into defense, I doubt his efforts will show up on the stat sheet.

If he can keep the likes of Kobe/Durant/Gay/Pierce/Melo/LeBron/etc. consistently under 25 points and shooting in the low 40%s, I'd say he deserves to be a part of the future team. If he can provide offense on top of that, he will be a key piece going forward. For now, though, just the defense will do.

The comparison is being made solely on stats it seems.

Marion did a lot more for that Mavs team than the stats showed and I think it's underrating Marion to be honest.

What do you mean Macs? Most people seem to be criticizing the comparison rather than praising it. This was taken from the National Post, maybe they're drinking the Kool-Aid

I dont know if JJ will be a marion type player. Marion was a geat defender and one of the quickest players in the NBA at some point. James Johnson has a bit of offense, solid defense But has foul troubles and sutrggling to handle the ball well

You do realize Marion was a 20+10 player in his prime right?

James' ceiling I think is a Sefolosha type. I dont see the offensive talent with James where he would be an effective starter past our dark years

The two players aren't similar at all. ... Marion was an all star and an athletic freak. JJ is still trying to find a place in the NBA.

Don't get me wrong, I like JJ but he has a lot to learn. He fouls too much, turns it over, and really can't shoot. For someone who is into the martial arts, he really doesn't have ripped muscles ... I question his work ethnic .. Hope I'm wrong.

He should focus on defense, not turning the ball over, and filling the lanes on the fast break.
