Calderon wants to take aim at another Olympic appearance

Quote:

Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon is hoping to play at a third straight Olympics with Spain.

Los Chicos de Oro can punch their ticket for the London Games by reaching the EuroBasket Final this summer in Lithuania.

"The EuroBasket this year is very important and more so for qualifying for the Olympics, which will make it all the more special,” Calderon said.

“Each year is more complicated because everyone wants to play.

“Moreover, this year you have 24 national teams and it will be beautiful.”

FIBA Europe last summer decided to expand the tournament from 16 to 24 teams.

In terms of squad make-up, a couple of names are being mentioned as newcomers for Spain.

Serge Ibaka, the African center who played basketball at ACB side Manresa and is now a star big man with Oklahoma City, could be up for selection if he obtains a Spanish passport.

Real Madrid’s Nikola Mirotic is another.

The Montenegrin-born forward is just 20 years of age and represented the country last year at the U20 European Championship.

He will be with Madrid when they compete at the Final Four this weekend in Barcelona.

"The coach will have to decide but Ibaka, just like Mirotic, would be welcome and I am delighted if there are new players,” Calderon said.

“Ibaka is a great player that can score, can make incredible blocks.

“He is a great defender and would be a very important addition to the national team.

“I have not seen Mirotic much but according to what the press says and when I speak to (Calderon’s former Baskonia teammates Pablo) Prigioni, (Sergi) Vidal and (Spain guard Sergio) Llull, I know he is playing very well.

“That is why it's going to be very difficult for the national team coach.”

Calderon is coming off a strong season in the NBA with the Toronto Raptors.

He's always so positive. This is why I like him on our team.

Serga Ibaka on the Spanish team? If Spain can keep their core together, they are my favourites to win it all.

Well, here comes another injury-filled season for Jose.

Note: I'm not against representing your country, but I'm against Jose doing it. Can't he take one summer off(from games) and try his best to fully heal?

My thoughts exactly. Got a bad feeling about this if he plays another summer again. Nothing wrong with pride playing for your country but Jose took a long time to even get close to what he was prior to getting hurt - and really hurt the Raps in the process. He's no spring chicken.

Spain tried Brad Oleson, now they call Ibaka... They have so much talent but still play ball with naturalized players. Shame.

NO because Spainish management knows they would be screwed if they were total reliant on the "I am too scared of the Nba bed wetters" running their back court.

They need Josie's experience. Because Rubio and Sada, are sub-par PGs. And much like last year's Worlds Spain will choke.

You think Sada stands a chance of getting into Spain NT?

They have to learn at SOME point.... what are they going to do.... run Jose out there when he's 50? lol...

I know that Spain wants to win badly but I HATE the idea of Jose playing for them again.

Makes me want to trade him... NOW (sorry cudes).

Hopefully Ricky Rubio will take most of his minutes again.

Don't know why that matters. It's Jose's decision, not the managements.

It's risky. He might get injured by playing for the national team.

He got hurt last offseason, and I'm not sure about the year before.

name me the last time he played a season or offseason and didn't get hurt. risk is a massive understatment.

You don't want him to get hurt in this particular offseason.

Let's be honest- Jose Calderon does not have a future with this organization. Since we mutually agree that it is better to trade him, would you risk an injury that hurts his trade value?

I think it's better for this organization if Jose just takes the summer off and get himself healthy.

if it were up to me i'd duct tape him to a chair until he's traded if i thought he wouldn't strain something trying to get out of it.

Too risky... he'll strain his hamstring as you sit him on the chair. ;)
