Calderon Looking At A $40 Million Deal With Raps

Is the $40 million being tossed out as an actual contract figure? It seems he may be using it simply as a means to give an actual figure for the agent's cut.

Although at the very least, I guess it's Grange's best guess, which is likely better than mine. I would hope that's over at least 5 years. Calderon is great, but $10 mill per could be a bit much.

Nah, I doubt Calde is asking for so much money. I bet it is a 5 year deal. 10 million would be too much.

40 million in 5 years would be 8 million a year, and thats what Ford is getting. that would be fair wouldnt it?

They want Calderon more than Ford (who makes 8 mil) so it's possible for him to get 10 million. But i honestly think that 4 years/32 million is probably what he'll get.

I think the 40 million was a number thrown out there. Speculation!

I think they will give him ~8 a year. They must offer him the same conditions they offered TJ, but they don't have to give too much since there is no real competition. 8, 8.5 sounds like a decent deal to me.

not really - don't forget that they gave him 8 when he was a very promising young pg. They only gave him that much because they were hoping TJ to become a bargain in the second half of his contract. I don't think Calderon is yet a proven elite pg, he's showing signs that he can be - but he's not yet at billups/nash salary level.

Exactly. Ford ended up not deserving the 8 mil, but when signed, it was thought he would be the number two guy in Toronto for the forseeable future.

Put it this way...when they gave Ford 8 mil, the Raps were expecting more out of him that they are out of Calderon. Same reason Antoine Walker continues to cash huge cheques while he sees less court time than some pleyrs collecting the minimum.

I have no problem paying him 8, because the precedent has been set, but it's not like negotiations will start at 8 just because thats what Ford was making.

Wouldn't the smartest thing be,for the Raps to negotiate a contract extension with him before someone else makes an offer. They might be forced to match a higher offer than they want to pay (10+ million).Other teams might over bid to get Toronto more into cap trouble!

Not when he just fired his North American agent and isn't listening nor accepting offers via his only agent now in Europe. There's obviously a premature deal on the table that Jose's happy with and is just waiting for the season to officially end before he accepts and an announcement is made.
