Default Buffery: Calderon Points Finger

Jose had pretty darn good stats last year for a guy that played hurt. Even hurt he was better then what we had coming off the bench. A healthy Jose means a better Raptor team. Once again this year we will have a back up that is a drop off when Jose rests on the bench. Our bench is better then last year but we will go as our point guard position goes. Jose knows that he must be better. Knowing it is one thing, doing it is where the work begins. Jose knows it so let see what happens.

Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon said he was "embarrassed" on the court at times last season because of his inability to play defence and his lack of mobility with the ball.

And for that reason, the fifth-year Raptor dedicated the summer to becoming totally healthy in preparation for the upcoming NBA season -- and that meant not playing for the Spanish team at the recent European championships in Poland.

Normally, Calderon loves playing for his country. But this summer, it was all about preparing for the NBA season and showing the Raptors that his best basketball is still in front of him.

"I was terrible since January," Calderon said in a candid interview at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham yesterday. "I couldn't play defence for the last part of the season. On offence, I was just settling for jumpers because I couldn't go one-on-one with my man.

"Last year, my numbers were better, but I was playing at 50%," he So, this has to be my year. I just want to win this year, forget about last year and work at getting this team into the playoffs and being a contender."

A sore hamstring suffered partway through the 2008-09 season limited Calderon's ability to pivot or cut on the court. The 28-year-old posted career numbers for points (12.8 per game), assists (8.9) and rebounds (2.9), but never felt right. In essence, the personable point guard felt that he let the team down, and is out to prove this season that he can play defence. Calderon is considered one of the best ball distributors in the NBA, but he defence has been questioned.

"The defence starts with me," he said. "I'm the point guard and I'm the first one who has to play defence. I was embarrassed last year because of my leg. I couldn't go right or left. I'm the first (line of defence) and I'm going to start playing defence."

Calderon is excited about the moves GM Bryan Colangelo made in the off-season -- most notably the acquisition of forwards Hedo Turkoglu and Reggie Evans, first round draft pick DeMar DeRozan and guard Jarrett Jack. The Raptors went 33-49 last season, failing to make the playoffs.

"Boston got better (in the offseason). Cleveland and Orlando are good. But, after that, we have a good fight to get in," said Calderon. "But we have to play defence and try to rebound. We've got better rebounders this year. Turkoglu is a good rebounder, Reggie Evans too. And run. We have a team that can run and everybody can pass the ball. I think we can have a really good team."

Interestingly, both Calderon and teammate Andrea Bargnani expressed confidence yesterday that if the Raptors play well this season and qualify for the playoffs, Chris Bosh will stay in Toronto after his current deal expires at the end of the season.

"I'm not worried about (Bosh leaving)," said Bargnani. "He loves Toronto."

Thanks for the posting raptor123. For future reference, please post links to your source. Saves us from getting in trouble. Thanks.

The highlight of the article for me is when Andrea said he isn't worried about Bosh leaving because he loves Toronto.

This quote from Jose was encouraging to hear too:

Although I'm not expecting Jose all of a sudden become Rondo on defense, but I am hoping that with him acknowledging this that he'll make strides in improving his defense this season.

I think Calderon is a very honest person, and anybody questioning his words is an ahole.
that being said, even at his best, he will still be an average defender. Which is ok, as long as his offense returns to his 2007 level. I've always been surprised when people say that Calderon can't turn the corner, when he was doing that consistently 2 years ago.

All one had to do was look at the difference in his play over the last dozen games or so (when his hammy was much better) to gauge how good (or adequate) his D really can be.

He was injured last season. He PLAYED injured. That's why his game fell off.

Hopefully the doubters will finally realize that now.

I count myself as something of a doubter, and the doubting has to do with his ability to play through a full schedule without breaking down one way or another. I'm pretty confident that he's in good shape and will not have to overdo anything with Jack backing him up though.

you can do anything you set your mind to, if Calderon wants to be a good defender and is mentally ready.

then, he'll be a good defender, you don't go and doubt what the guy just said.

Hmmm...if his effort level is directly proportional to his productivity, then this year Jose should average 25.6 PPG, 17.8 APG, and 5.8 RPG.

This is all great to hear, unless he turns out to be the Joey Graham of point guards. All talk about what he's going to do "this year". Not saying it's not good to hear, but it would be cool if he exploded out and caught teams by surprise with what he could do instead of them expecting more from him this year.

He will be at the top 3 in PG category. Hoping a Nash-like season for him.

In order for him to be top 3 he would probably have to lead the league in assists per game cause he won't score more than CP3 or DWill.

But that would be awsome if he did lead the league!

Alert is in Nunavut northern Canada...not Alaska

And the fucking issue is he hasn't done it over a season..hurt or not last year he has to produce and there is enough valid reason for doubt despite your confident claims to the contrary.

I'm talking about a different Alert.

And fuck off with this "whole season" stuff. his developement has been in a straight line since he came to the NBA. He's been hurt a few times, but he has also been one of the ONLY consistantly hard working players on that team.

It wasnt Chris Bosh stepping up to the Celtics and winning, it wasn't Anthony Parker in KG's face. It was any of those guys stepping up and challenging a lot of opponents.... that stuff comes at a cost.

for real, you know it's true 'judge. we've heard just about everything from 100-50% from him now. it's hard not to see the pattern of percentages based against the difficulty of the schedule.

we all know that jose was hurt, but i'd rather him be a man about it and say that he had a hard time adjusting to the schedule and extended minutes rather than a hamstring injury he sustained during the summer.
