Default Bring more europeans!

I just remembered this,

I did a project for my data management class in high school when the Raptors were having there amazingly overachieving season two years ago. I was analyzing how the Raptors had improved so drastically in one offseason. One of the things that was clearly visible was the international presence on the team. We had over 6 guys that were not born in the states (Pape Sow being one of them lol). Then i decided to see what other teams had more international players and how they were doing. The teams that i can remember where the San Antonio Spurs, the the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. I don't know if this was a coincidence or not, but I do think that international players bring a certain x-factor to the game. It certainly depends on the player, don't get me wrong, but the ones on those 4 teams were definitely bringing something very positive to their squads.

I just though I should bring this up and see what you guys thought about it. With the prospect of bringing back Delfino, I am also hoping that Maurizio can work some magic in Europe and find a rough player like Garbajosa somewhere.

Agree? Disagree?

Americans dislike playing in Canada anyways, so might as well. But, hasn't BC been doing that for awhile?

Actually it worked a hell of a lot better than what we got now. It got us from last place to a division title and two trips to the playoffs. This current roster sure in heck is not working.

That is what I suggested a while ago. This can also expand the fan base. Besides it is usually better to mix different things for a better output.

I'm all for bringning in good players regardless of their place of birth, but if i had to choose between two players of equal talent, one of them American born and one of them from either Europe, Asia or Africa, i would always take the latter.

Toronto as a basketball market IS preceived negatively by a lot of Amercans for various, some ignorant reasons. So sure... go more European. Go Asian. Go African and South American. Ariba.

Acquire players that want to be here and will appreciate the opportunity that is playing in Toronto.
If certain players don't want to be here then screw 'em.
Maybe if the organization looked at building a TEAM instead of trying to satisfy individuals, the on court product would be better off.
The so-called "European experiment" here clearly brought better results then what we've seen this season. The squad two years ago was characterized by unselfish, team basketball. It would be nice to see those days return once more.

The question is... how do you know they really want to be here?

You ask them and they tell you that it is great here and they love Toronto and the fans. In the summer they just bolt away and even not return phone calls. I don't recall many American players who really wanted to be here except a few like JYD, Alvin, Peterson... Most just use Toronto as a stepping stone. There is a typical ignorance among Americans that the US is the greatest place to be on earth. The propaganda is so strong that even the poorest believe in that.

That's a good point.
It must be easier to gauge the attitude of players when you're closer to the situation though. Management/coaches can probably tell who's heart is with the team and who's isn't.
There's got to be some American born players who can recognize what a great opportunity playing here can provide. I don't hear many former or current players trashing Toronto the city. Most have nice things to say.
It's the attitude that the Raptors organization is somehow inferior that's the issue.
Players wanting to bail on a losing team is nothing new. Maybe our insecurities as fans are magnified by a collective feeling that because we're Canadian, players automatically want to leave.

let's face it, none of these players grew up imagining themselves in a raps uniform hitting the game winner in their driveway. i think this is a major factor. the franchise just isn't a part of their hopes and dreams. while they didn't imagine the nuggets or the wolves either, at least that keeps them in their own country. and the wolves aren't exactly raking in free agents these days either.

This team starts winning, and I guarantee Toronto starts looking like a MUCH sexier option.

Who wanted to come to Boston back when they were stinking up the joint. New York even had trouble attracting guys back when Z-Bo and Stephon were causing a ruckus.

In the last 20 years of bball. Jordan has won 6, Shaq 4 and Duncan 4. (the latter 3 and 3 finals MVP's... Jordan 6). Other than Dirk, who hasn't won a championship yet, what do u have to prove that European players will make us anything close to a championship team?

European basketball is like American Soccer (ie. pretty good) and Vice-Versa. We've made the playoffs 3 of the previous 4 seasons, let's not get carried away here.

I'm generalizing all american players, because that is ignorant, but I feel like most european players, or players that have played in europe (Solomon not one of them), bring in some intangibles such as a very unselfish and team oriented game. That's the one thing that i loved about the Raptors when they had the euro project going. The ball movement and the team chemistry was at a peak. Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe its just the mentality of some players being pushed on to others.

Man i miss Garbo...........

No one is saying that we need to ditch americans and grab 12 europeans to play for the raptors. I'm saying that they are great pieces to a team. At this moment, I don't think anyone's realistic goal is winning a championship next season. The goal IMO is to improve this team so that they are a .500 + team. No one can take away that american players are the major superstars in basketball.

Tim Duncan was born in the Virgin Islands (owned by the states). Let's just call international even though its a stretch. That makes the spurs trio, Parker, Ginobli, Duncan an international trio winning a championship. Even if Tim Duncan isn't considered international, which is more realistic, two major pieces of that team come from the international scene.

It's because international players play at 100% day in and day out. They don't care what there record is or what team they are playing on. All they know is that they are in the NBA. Unlike many American stars which some of them play at the level they are getting paid at.
