Lightbulb Bring Back Alvin!

Doug suggests bringing back Alvin into the fold.

Quote:
Action: Alvin’s gone

Reaction: He should be back

Old favourite Alvin Williams stopped by practice on Saturday but had to get home to the family for Easter and didn’t get to yesterday’s game. But speaking with a lot of people in the organization, some of worked with him before, some who have just come to know him, it’s wildly apparent he should be on the staff somehow next year.

As an assistant coach, or a basketball development coach working guys out at practice and before games, there has to be a job for the guy. I think he’d like it, I think it’d be a great move to help the young players and I think Bryan has to make this happen.

How about just have players watch footage of him trying for 48 minutes of every game....then showing games like the Christmas one in Denver so they can see the contrast.

That would make my heart swell a bit. I was watching Douby last night and thinking that with a little work, he could defend a little something like Alvin. It's too bad he doesn't have the size, but being able to stay in front of his guy is not out of the question at least.

Douby need to get his brow waxed and become a little more aerodynamic to be a good defender.

Dont know a lot about Alvin Williams, I know he was good and by his interview he looked like a really nice guy. I hope this organization doesnt make decisions based on being nice though.

Alvin coaching Caldy would be great

then he can become a well rounded PG that isn't a defensive liability

He was Garbo in a guard's body...would rather have died out on the court than be forced to hang them up.

Hope the helps.

I really admired the guy - basketball development coach sounds good for him.

Alvin Williams was a solid defender but it's not like he can change water into wine.

I feel the same way. I LOVED Alvin when he was here. As a player, he exhibited the kind of heart and passion that so many players are lacking. He most certainly was a warrior on the court in the truest sense.

However, i'd be surprised if Alvin was a good choice as a coaching candidate - even in a supporting position. Besides - so many of the good qualities he had as aplayer... you can't "coach" that shit. Players either have it or they don't.

i think he was more than garbo in a guard's body
the guy was able to play PG at a near 6'5" frame, and his speed was a lot better than garbo's, if anyone in that 2001 playoffs was defending AI best it was probably him, although i guess it doesn't mean too much because AI would score like 50 points a game
probably 1 of the best alleyoop/lob passers in the nba at that time, sure he had VC who could catch any pass anywhere but his pass was still deadly that way
and he was clutch in the end of games, who do you think chuck swirsky started saying ONIONS for?!

Mm I think it was more of a sentimental comparison than a technical one because Bel is Spanish. The two players were similar in terms of their attitude towards the game though.

Bingo.

I wasn't saying they had similar games...similar mindsets.

Action: Butler gets stopped

Reaction: Credit Alvin.

This story is absolutely legit, the timing just happens to be perfect in my Get Alvin On The Staff crusade.

It’s last Saturday after practice, or so I’m told by people who were there and would know, and Alvin’s chatting with some Raptor types about the Friday game, where Caron Butler hit that jumper at the buzzer to win.

You remember that, Butler set up, dribbled about 10 seconds off the clock and then drove on Marion and scored. Well, in that time he was dribbling out the clock, Butler sort of moved back towards midcourt to get a better angle and create some space.

Well, what Williams couldn’t understand – and I sure didn’t think of it at the time, I doubt any of you did and I’m sure not many Raptors did, either – was why Marion didn’t chase him to midcourt, put some pressure on him, make him go earlier, or at least turn him somewhere he didn’t want to go.

Makes entire sense, doesn’t it?

Well, last night, sort of the same situation (although there was less time and less of an isolation) and we saw Marion right up on Butler, forcing him to go and sending him quickly to help.

Not bad strategy, eh?

"Boogie" is one former Raptor I wouldn't mind having back. If they decide to put a youngish former player on the coaching staff I hope it's him.
