BR: Raptors will challenge NBAs worst all time record

Quote:

Last year, NBA fans became reacquainted with the 1972-73 Sixers—they of the worst single-season record of all-time, at 9-73—as the cover-your-eyes Nets threatened to challenge the ignominious record for most losses in a season.

This year, after losing Chris Bosh in free agency, the Toronto Raptors will be in the same position.

Last year with Bosh, the Raptors couldn't play defense worth a lick. According to John Hollinger of ESPN, the Raptors were the only team to give up an average of more than 110 points per 100 possessions. No amount of offensive proficiency could save a team that played D that terribly.

Now with Bosh gone and Hedo Turkoglu traded away to Phoenix (say what you will, but he averaged nearly 20-5-5 two seasons ago), the Raps will rely on Jose Calderon, DeMar DeRozan, Leandro Barbosa, and Andrea Bargnani as their main scoring threats.

If that lineup isn't inspiring much confidence in you, dear Toronto fan, there's a reason for that. Your team is going to be categorically awful this year, and the times of 40-win seasons will be a thing of the past for the next year or two.

never say never and records are meant to be broken

LightsOut 07-16-2010 05:11 PM

love this, triano should take articles like this and let the players read them before the games without even saying anything to them

pleasae, Bosh didnt make that big of a difference to this team. his win shares was 9.6 so take that directly off last seasons numbers and team still hits 30 wins.

Demar, Sonny and Amir having developed a bit, a more open game plan and this team as currently constructed is still going to hit at least 30 wins. I would go so far to say they will be pushing a 500 record and pushing an appearance in the playoffs.

And the offseason still isnt over, I expect more changes yet to come.

To suggest that this team is going to win less than 10 games is ridiculous.

weren't we around 500 without BoshÉ

if the team ran the exact same style of play(which i highly soubt) and others dont increase at least somewhat in effectiveness, then the team would end u with around 30 wins(as Bosh's win shares was at 9.6)

I say 12-14 range
Jersey, Philly (possible AI trade), Detroit, Indy (possible Murphy trade), Toronto will be bottom 5

Halfway through July, money to spend and the roster clearly not set and this is what we get.:cwm34:

its possible, but we have 2 first rounders, 15million tpe and around 10 million in expirings to bolster the roster as well.

So I cant see NJ being better yet at least
Detroit, no way
Indy and Philly may be better, but so may the raps.

Raps are gonna be between 7 and 10.

Hmm I don't think we'll be a great team... but worst record of all time? Really? A sub 20 (sub 10) win team? I think that's a bit harsh... but I've badly overrated the Raptors going into the last 3 seasons so who knows.

What were people's thoughts of the Nets BEFORE last season? mind you, they did lose all 3 of their talented players at once.

Torontosaurus 07-16-2010 05:26 PM

I never take anything from that site seriously..

I agree completely, 35-41 wins is what i predict.

Doesn`t he mean Minnesota?

Raptors aren`t that bad but they get so little respect around the league.

Our players lack branding, so people look at them and automatically think they suck. Sure, we have no franchise player, and our best player would only be 3rd best or worse on most NBA teams. But we are very deep and if we'll play the right way, I can see us finishing in the high 30s. Houston and Milwaukee were in a similar position last season, and they vastly exceeded the low expectations.

Why are you guys all dropping the case before it's even dealt?
We have great young talents, who won't lead us to 40+ wins next season
but definately will put up good plays to place ourselves from 30 to 40 wins.
Look at the major players that we will have next season:
Bargnani, Barbosa, Kleiza, JJ, Demar, Sonny, Amir.
Defensively, I would call them decent, other than Sonny, who is of course known for his hustle.
Offensively, we got a great group here. Without Bosh, Bargnani will explode at the big man spot, Barbosa will be great help in PG and SG, Kleiza was a steal in swingman offense that we lacked last year, JJ is known for game composure and driving it to the rim, Sonny gave us a lot to expect for and of course Amir who will be on and off the bench rotating around PF and C to provide energy.

With above average offense and okay defensive fellas that we have here, I dont think it is too much to expect 30 - 40 wins next season.

Sonny is one of our better defenders. By the way, calling those players major is a slight stretch to say the least.

Not expecting any number of wins, but this is just insulting.
We will lose in offensive efficiency for sure, but defence will be better. Bosh and Hedo thats 2 of 4 defensive liabilities gone. Its up to coaches to hide Jose on D and Bargs is enough to box out his own man

Jose is gone, probably within a week or two.
