i heard a story a loooong time ago that before the internet really got huge and when pretty much no one used it for surfing, like mid 90's, a guy bought domain names like mcdonalds.com, sears.com, etc and when those companies wanted the domains he ended up selling them to the companies for thousands of dollars...
any one know if this is true?

i can't confirm that.....but people do it all the time
in fact if this guy had just bought chrisbosh.com & held it, he could have sold it to bosh.

i think he's in trouble because he tried to profit from it. it turned into a form of fraud

intellectual property has nothing to do with wisdom or intelligence. it's property that comes from his own creativity and that is not physically tangible.

on top of that, chris seems like a pretty intelligent guy anyways.... laughing at that just means you didnt know what it meant, making you unintelligent

i know what it means.....but what "creativity" are we talking about here? i've never heard of him doing anything creative

and saying he seems like an intelligent guy is pretty laughable
if you're comparing him to rafer alston then maybe
but if you think he comes across as "intelligent" you have to find some new friends

I've actually been involved with a case like this and it's a fairly complicated process - but you can be sued for using a domain taking advantage of somebody else's brand. As far as I know, it's impossible to take away the domain - but they can force you to cease and desist the operation of a website that is misleading. If he had a website selling flowers - I doubt they could have forced him to close it.

taking somebody property away though is illegal, so I doubt the judge could have ordered the guy to actually give Bosh the domain. Probably he was asked to shut down the website.

wow.

first of all, the videos are an obvious example of his creative work, whether you like them or not. but beyond that, i still don't think you know what intellectual property means. the point is that someone was trying to profit from his name, his likeness (possibly), and other intangiable property - ideas, marketing initiatives and branding opportunities, his public persona, etc. all of these things belong under intellectual property, and all of them belong to chris.

and as to his intelligence, who are we to judge? we hear snippets in the media and some blog postings. it's not like we have a thesis or something from which to assess him.

I think the fact that he's a member of the National Society of Black Engineers says something.

his name & likeness are not "intellectual property"

and you're right....i have no idea how intelligent he is.....that was a little much

but the fact that he is a member of the national society of black engineers isn't that important if he's not an engineer
i could be a member of the naacp....that doesn't make me a "colored person"

actually, when they are also brands they are. try making money off the name michael jordan, for instance.

pretty sure that's true, buying domains and waiting for comapnies to buy 'em off you is called "domain squatting."

lol yea, i guess its not his intellectual property, but rather his parents cause they gave him the name. Unless he renamed himself?
