Default Bosh Bulking Up

Quote:
Bosh came to him as a stick-figure freshman at Georgia Tech University trying to make the leap to the NBA at 6 foot 10 and 215 pounds in 2003. Now, six years into his professional career and a four-time NBA all-star, Bosh is at Bailey’s Furniture with an eye toward making perhaps the most difficult leap of all: from good to great.

He thinks building himself up to 250 pounds – about 20 more than he played at in 2008-09 – will help the cause.

The 25-year-old power forward has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA the last three seasons, averaging 22.5 points and 9.7 rebounds, but Bosh wants more and has focused on reinventing himself physically to get it. Stronger, higher, faster: He’s taken an Olympian approach to his off-season training.

Fittingly, Roberson has brought on Kyle Meadows to help. A former world-class sprinter, member of the United States bobsled team and NFL wide receiver, Meadows has a simple goal.

“It’s all about speed, we have to train speed, that’s the neuromuscular element,” he says. “That’s why we do power lifting – it’s explosive and ballistic and sports specific.”

Thats great, a guy whose offense used to rely on speed and is slowly turning into taking all jumpers is going to take away some of his best asset-speed. and put extra weight for his girly knees to have to handle.

Trying to be a boozer when he should be trying to not be a j.o.

Personally, I'd be happy with seeing him at 240lbs. Any more than that and he might lose some quickness.

Still.... good to hear!

Pushing himself to a greater extent is the first step in being a leader. Next he has to push the other players around him.

I like that speed is mentioned in there. They are talking about increasing explosiveness. And increasing strength as well can only help his knees. And from other stuff he's said - helping his knees is a big objective.

How he came upon this Roberson guy when Snooch was clearly available is beyond me though.

If the guy puts in the work and gets the results then he's a max player, and only someone filled with utter contempt would try to deny that. He's 25, and apparently with brand new eyes wide open. I say let's see what happens.

Yeah, explosive movements help train quick twitch fibres and will help with his quickness, but hey why look at the facts when it's more convenient to take a pot shot at the guy.

LOL i know. Are sprinters in the olympics that are jacked slow because they have big muscles?

You're 100% right Acie. Make fun of Bosh when he's posting videos on youtube that he should be training.... and make fun of him when he's training too some of these guys on this forum are way too much.

I made fun of him for not training and trying to further the "brand".

I'm glad to hear he's taking training seriously.

I feel that there is a slight contradiction in this statement

"“It’s all about speed, we have to train speed, that’s the neuromuscular element,” he says. “That’s why we do power lifting – it’s explosive and ballistic and sports specific.”"

Powerlifting, despite the name, has less to do with power than it does with strength. The aim of powerlifitng is to increase strength on three main movements : squats, deadlift, bench press. It worries me that this trainer is describing powerlifting as 'explosive and ballistic', when in reality it is slow and controlled.

Power is actually a function of strength as well as 'speed', so doing powerlifting will probably help bosh... however, real 'power' training is probably better obtained from an olympic lifting program, or a program with dynamic effort work mixed in.

Hate to be a critic, but this is a pretty common misconception, and it surprises me that top athletes/trainers still make this mistake ;_;

Thanks Acie

As long as Bosh is lifting some iron, and eating big, I'm not too concerned about the specifics of his program

This isn't the first time Bosh has said he's wanted to bulk up - he's pussied out each time. 20 pounds is pretty steep for someone that's given up on numerous occasions. I'll believe it when I see it.

You're right.... but I assumed that the trainer was talking about getting Bosh into things like cleans, snatches and other explosive olympic lifts rather than just working on his benching and squatting.

At least I hope that's what he meant.
