Thumbs down Bleacher Report: Jay Triano's Coaching Costs Raptors A Win

Written by RF affiliate and member brother steve.

Quote:
Playing the high scoring 8-2 Phoenix Suns in their own building, where the Suns are undefeated on the season looked like a near impossible task for the reconstructed 5-4 Toronto Raptors.

But the Raptors were game on this night and took the Suns to the brink of defeat when Hedo Turkoglu’s last-second shot failed to fall as time expired. Suns 101, Raptors 100.

However, the game should never have gotten to a last-second shot for the win.

The Raptors had played the Suns even and ahead for the entire game, ending each quarter with a slight lead Even when the Suns finally managed to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, the Raptors looked like they were not going to let this game get away.

But for some strange and illogical reason, Jay Triano decided to go back to the worst defensive guard lineup the Raptors have put on the floor this season.

At the 8:28 mark of the fourth quarter with the score tied at 84, Jay Triano substituted in Jose Calderon for Hedo Turkoglu to reunite him with Jarrett Jack. Let the bloodshed begin!

As has been discussed on numerous occasions this lineup simply doesn’t work.

“As recently identified in the True Hoop Article: What’s Working For The Raptors , when Jose Calderon and Jarrett Jack are on the floor together, the Raptors are surrendering 136.8 points per 100 possessions. Now that’s unbelievably bad! It’s historically bad! Toronto Raptors: Evidence of Defense

I'm not sure why Jack gets those minutes, maybe it was a ten game plan, lets hope they are assesing the rsults and adjusting as we speak.

The funniest thing is that Jack was brought here for hei experience, leadership and apparent defensive toughness. Yet he's shown none of that, and to top it all off Jose is player better defence then him in the last 5-6 games. Jack better get his head out of his ass or he'll continue to lose minutes to Belinelli and Derozan @ SG. At this point i'd only have him as a backup PG.

The most disheartening thing to me is his apparent disinterest. Perfect example was last night, Turkoglu hits a three to take the lead with under a minute left, the bench is up and excited and he stays sitting down bitting his nails.

It's really easy to hate on a guy when he's down and out, but you do understand that sometimes (especially as a guard) it takes a while for a guy to adjust a new situation or that guys simply get in a funk.

I suspect that once Jack gets rolling you will have an entirely different opinion of him.

I thought I was the only one that hated the JJ + Jose combo. Phew. But yeah, Triano needs to get bitch slapped if he keeps playing those two at the same time. Jose and JJ look clueless when they're playing together.

Jose looks fine, it's JJ bringing the tandem down. Bad shots, bad decisions, turnovers. It has hurt me to watch him play in stretches. Frankly Belinelli has played too well in the last couple of games to not deserve JJ's minutes at the two.

I though Caldy would play 32 minutes and Jack 16
We already have DeMar, Beli, Weems, possibly Wright

what positives does a JJ+Caldy tandem bring? thats what you should ask

maybe Jay is reliving the Jose + Ford tandem from back then, only w/Jack. and it's definitely not working.

JJ definitely looks more comfortable when Jose is not on the floor.

Jose and TJ rarely played with one another and if they did it was because of another guard getting into foul trouble.

Triano ends games now with Wright instead of JJ.

Wright was injured last night. He didn't know what else to do. I think Triano has done an excellent job coaching the last few games and thought Jack would deal better under a pressure situation than the younger guys.

Smart coaching move, bad move by Jack to play like shat. Not Triano's fault.

Bellinelli was on the floor the last few minutes of last night's game not Jack.

Probably this lineup of JJ and Jose only boosts our distribution of the ball on offense and the only reason why Triano keeps it this way.

The thing that I was really liking about Jack in the preseason was that he was pushing the ball and driving to the rim a TON.

Now it just seems as though he's content to walk it up and jack 3s rather than trying to pressure the defense. I hope that he comes around because I really saw him being a big key for us....

Hmmm.... maybe we can package him and Bargs for CP3?

*cue dream sequence*

My favorite play of the game was Jack driving and dishing to Belinelli. I could stand to see some more of that. He's going to be just fine if he keeps up with that sort of play.

When Jay Triano plays Jack with Calderon he is killing Jack's confidence. Jack knows he's costing the Raps games but it's not his fault.

Coaches throughout his career keep trying to play him at off-guard and it doesn't work. Jack has been a good PG and will be a good back-up to Jose, but Jay is hurting Jack's play by sending him out to do something he's just not that good at.

The Good news has been the Raptors have played stellar defense 3 games in a row now! Evidence of Defense Outlines just how far the Raptors defense has come - and just how much the Jack/Calderon line-up has hurt them this season.

obviously the coaches see something we don't but i have yet to see the benefits of this two point guard lineup. as soon as he came into the game last night i noticed a dip in the team's energy and it did nothing to slow the suns down offensively.
keep him coming in for jose for those backup minutes. they need to be more strategic with using this lineup. it feels like they're trotting it out for experimental purposes.

yeah when they are on together they dont seem to successful...however when jack is on the floor at the point, AND hes driving to the net it creates good things. havent seen that from him lately but we dont really have a guy that can get to the rim that quick and kick it out or whatever.

lately he is shooting some questionable jump shots...i think he should stick with driving a bit more. on defence he has been a little bit of a let down, but so has the team in general (except for the last game)

It's something that has been said since the preseason. The Jack and Calderon combination is an odd one. They just get smoked when they're both on the floor.
