Default Blake Griffin couldn't afford to lose the dunk contest

Yeah, I know we've talked about this, but another interesting article.

Quote:
n this official media advisory it listed the “KROQ BLAKE GRIFFIN SHOWCASE” from 1:20 pm to 2:00 pm with the following description: “Five middle school students will showcase their dunking talents in front of 2011 NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest winner Blake Griffin.”

Nothing wrong with this right? Except for the fact that the release was sent via email at 5:28 pm PST on Saturday Feb. 19, over an hour before the Slam Dunk contest’s scheduled 6:30 pm PST start.

Check out the official NBA release. CLICK HERE

This nugget of information is sure to lead some NBA observers to wonder if Vince McMahon has been hired as David Stern’s adviser on All-Star Weekend.

Surprisingly nobody in the pro basketball media seemed to notice, or they didn’t really care enough to write about it. I believe 99% of media types never even open the messages sent by the league. Most go right to the spam folder.

The NBA did send out a corrected version of the release later Saturday night, but that’s not enough for those people who believe that the first version proves the event was fixed.

According to a mole who works for a popular basketball website, Griffin WAS asked about this official release being sent out claiming he’d won before the contest had even started. He wasn’t happy.

Facts about Blake Griffin on All-Star Weekend

- Subway spent a reported $3 million in a Blake Griffin media campaign All-Star weekend. ZERO was obviously spent on JaVale McGee of the Wizards.

- NBA officials forced Blake Griffin to use a Kia, the official car sponsor of the league, rather than a higher end car he wanted to use for his final dunk. This product placement paid off in a commercial and possible endorsement deal for Griffin.

- Blake Griffin is the most searched athlete in the world on YouTube. It would have been bad for the NBA’s business if he had lost the dunk contest to a scrub from the Wzards.

- Nike had an entire marketing campaign planned around Blake Griffin winning the dunk contest. They began to reveal the plan this week for the Nike Hyperdunk 2011 10.0 for Blake Griffin.

All that, and Javale was the third best dunker behind Derozan and Griffin.

there is no proof about what time the email was sent LOL

why wouldnt he have screenshotted the time of the email or something if he has factual evidence it was sent before the slam dunk contest started?

surely if he had the evidence he would've added it to the release he showed, which has no time/date on it whatsoever.

smh

Doesnt prove it was fixed (although I think it was).

A lot of organizations prepare releases based on probable events. This one just got away earlier than wanted. Call it a send-fukk.

Every e-mail has a time-stamp in the mail.
People received the e-mail BEFORE the dunk contest started.
Not too sure what you're going on about here.

The NBA has been run like the WWE for years and years and years. The Miami Heat championship with Shaq, and the Lakers over the Kings one year come to mind quickly.

It's frustrating...

Of course it was rigged

Blake was in it why? - All the hype - new face of the NBA

Derozen was in it why? - For the entire canadian fan base to keep interested and watch and a hometown kid

Serge Ibaka - International Flavour? - keep the rest of the world interested

Javale Mcgee - Plays for one of the worst teams with the worst track record (player track record & team record wise) for the last how long now?

Who gets to pick these contestants? Setup no?

No it doesn't prove anything, but it's highly suspicious, and if the shoe fits...

Perhaps I'm jaded, but the NBA couldn't give a flying fuck about Canada. DeRozan was in it because he's simply one of the best young dunkers in the NBA. He's from SoCal, so he was really the hometown kid in this contest.

Serge Ibaka I think was kind of in because the international angle and also because he and Javale McGee are atypical dunk contest contestants - much taller than usual. McGee is a crazy athlete and I believe the first 7' dunk contestant in NBA history.

The dunk over the car licked bag

Griffin missed more dunks in that contest, then Clipper made baskets in a game

I knew griffin was going to win, after Robison won last year I know trigram was going to win. I actually told a buddy I wouldn't bet derozen was going to win because griffin was, a first pick playing good ball for an la team.....why did they even have a dunk contest

Were they really in the dunk contest? Wow - I did not know that Sampson was in the dunk contest.

As for Bender, you're right. He was just so utterly forgettable that I've forgotten all about him!
------

OK let me rephrase- McGee is the first 7 footer with a serious, guard-like 30-40" vertical to ever be in the dunk contest.

I heard about this on The Score's Tim and Sid Uncut radio show. They said this the day after the dunk contest. They received the same email sent by the NBA and then a few minutes later they received a corrected version.

That's an interesting argument, but I can't help but feel that rigging it would be unnecessary.

In Blake, here you have a kid who:
- has a reputation for having fantastic dunks (and nothing else)
- was the biggest name on the ticket
- was highly promoted and marketed
- with KIA and the choir, had by FAR the biggest presentation (regardless of whether it was fair or not)

It's pretty clear that while yes, the fans do get to choose, this was more of a "hitting you over the head" type of thing. You don't really get to choose. You get to pick Blake Griffin. Why? Because the media likes him and he's one of the most talented dunkers. He also put on one hell of a show with all the baloney he brought out for his final dunk.

Rigged? No
Slanted? Yeah.
Could be why I'm not watching the dunk contest next year.
