Knicks Bill Simmons Trade Idea With Knicks

Something I caught at the RealGM this morning from Bill Simmons podcast. From a financial standpoint I think its not too bad of a deal only if we decide if we're giving up on the rest of season.

Thoughts?

.

Raptors get immediate cap space. Knicks build around 2010. A few problems with this deal: (1) Raptors will go into luxury tax area, and (2) while the 2009 free agent class is decent (Boozer, R. Wallace, Odom) don't fit if we're building with Bargs, the P.Gs Kidd, Bibby, A. Miller don't make sense with Calderon and the few players who fit a need (Iverson, Artest) have serious question marks.

What I like about this from the Raptors standpoint is I don't believe in 2010 we can outbid franchises like NY Knicks, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix for tier 1 free agents like Wade, Lebron, Amare, Kobe. Rather we will have to settle for tier 2 F.A like Nash, Camby, J. Howard, T. Prince. So going into 2009 with less teams competing for top F.A we could snag the elite players in that class. Also it for better or worse Bargnani gets 35+ minutes a game to develop full time.

Interesting. Is it even that much of a give up on this year? Raps are playing well right now without JO. We bring in starburry who has his issues but is in a contract year and may just be a scoring option if played at the 2 spot. It's not like we're winning a title this year anyways. Worst case scenario is Bargs getting lots of playing time and a ton of cap space for next season.

...on a further note. I'd love to see T. Prince in a Raptors uniform.

...on a further, further note...I'm a fan of JO. I'd like to see it work out but I'm not sure he's a help into the future.

I'd take a hard look at it. Getting a player of Marbury's calibre is nothing to sneeze at.

IF he'd come to Toronto I would think that he'd fit in VERY well playing the 2 alongside Jose.

Stephon Marbury currently holds one of the best jobs...if not the best job in the world. Not only is he currently being paid 20.9 million a year to not work...but his employer refuses to let him work.

I bet he's getting good at Madden '09!

basically trading for early cap space

I'd do the trade as a last resort, if we cant get a quality 2 or 3.

Yeah, I wasn't really looking it from your point of view TO, but more an early start to the free agents available this upcoming summer. There are some pretty good names out there to go after for us to make a run next season.

There's no way I want to see Marbury's mug. If he stays in hiding then it works for me. But that leaves this team with hardly any kind of an actual working roster.

Oh that's a bonus too. That's why it's pretty much a win-win IMO.

I'd throw a TON of cash at Prince.... he'd be awesome here.

Who would we sign with early cap space.

the best players on the market this summer are:
Boozer, Sheed, Bass---all in positions we are pretty good at.
for the wings there is Artest, Ariza, Marion, AI.

Artest is a gamble, Ariza would be real good, Marion we could trade for now and mabey get something else with him(anthony, Cook), Iverson, I want no part of him.

Then there is Odom-at 375 years of age why should we go after him, but he would be a real nice fit I think.

The one guy who interests me, and thats only if he terminates his contract early, would be Hedo Turkeyglue, Him, Bosh and Bargs would be a real big, playmaking front court.

No team would ever be hurt by adding Boozer to their roster. Stay away from Marion and Sheed.

A team with an allstar at PF wouldnt benefit, it wouldnt hurt, but it wouldnt benefit.

Boozer is a PF, Bosh is a PF, who starts.....

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet... by doing this deal and making a big splash in FA the year BEFORE Bosh is eligible will show him better how the team's going to look and if it looks good he'd be more likely to resign. If you wait until 2010 to use JO's money then you have less time to find a free agent before he decides on what he wants to do. I'd be down with the deal.

this summer's free agency isn't a wower. but teams can do a lot with capspace. we can take on deals from teams over the tax in exchange for picks, for example (getting an expiring deal and a pick could help us a lot downstream).

note that bosh's option to extend is before we'd be able to spend this hypothetical capspace.

Thats a question I always had. When we resign Bosh, wont it be for $18mill-ish? Doesnt he already make about that much?

So resigning Bosh really has no impact on our cap issues....correct?

I'd still like to pursue a guy like Marion - if we could get him. He performs better when playing with a good point guard - which we have in Calderon. Him at the 3, hides a bit of the rebounding woes we have because he's a good rebounder himself. I don't think Marion gets max money in the off-season, but if we can somehow acquire him and show him that he can be successful here, he might give us a hometown discount when re-upping.

I agree with Mango, Marin would fit well here. I think he could be resigned for 12-13 million in the offseason MAX. Between the leftover expiring from his deal and Joey/AP expirings, it would leave about 10 million in capspace to sign some MLE fillers(delfino, Nesterovich) and a good SG(Mabey steal away Marvin Williams)

If cannot resign Marion try for either Odom or Artest with the same amount.
