Raptors Bill Simmons brings up Dwane Casey

You know what really delights me? After six weeks of watching the disjointed Raptors and the woefully run Maple Leafs, Toronto fans get to watch a well-coached home team for three hours. Did anyone see the epic tic-tac-toe match between Jason Kidd and Dwane Casey last night?

Kidd's phenomenally lethargic Nets nearly blew a 15-point lead in the last three minutes before Casey upped the ante, wasting 10 solid seconds down one before getting his guys to foul, then calling a timeout so he could run the play everyone knew was coming (Rudy Gay waiting way too long to do anything, then dribbling into a double-team) before somehow ending up with a corner 3 from AMIR JOHNSON. I wish the NFL and NBA did a Coach Swap during the first weekend of December. Imagine Casey blowing challenges and timeouts, J-Kidd flatlining on the sidelines, Mike D'Antoni sticking with the run-and-shoot no matter what personnel he had, Mike Brown trying to play 53 guys in one half

Ouch. Anyone see Kidd's epic scene vs the lakers when he got his own player to hit him, then spilled his drink on the court to get an extra timeout when the nets had already ran out of them with 2 seconds left?

edit... just realized there's a thread on this. It's idiotic and hilarious in the same breath.

Dwane Casey: When Masai Ujiri said before the season that Casey would not be judged on wins and losses this year, many took it to mean that Ujiri wouldn't pin the record of a potentially tanking team on Casey's head. The flip side to that, however, is that Casey could guide a non-tanking team into playoff contention in the laughable East and still be judged by the flaws in his system rather than by a misleading 40 wins, for example. Through 14 games, you can make the argument that the Raptors have lost a couple due to some questionable coaching decisions and some sketchy lineup combinations at inopportune times. In addition, the team's offense has a tendency to stagnate and crawl to a snail's pace, while center of the future Jonas Valanciunas isn't getting nearly enough touches with the combination of Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan in the fold.

In fairness, Casey has been saddled with a couple of coach-killer type players (Gay, Bargnani) during his Raptors tenure, but he also hasn't done himself any favors over the last couple of years after an encouraging debut season in Toronto. I don't know if Casey's in as much trouble as some of the other names on this list, but in the final year of his contract, he's also far from safe.

casey is a great defensive assistant coach, and a below average head coach, it was a good idea to hire casey it just didn't pan out, probably wont see him back

Agree .... he seems to be a decent man and a good defensive coach ... he is just plain weak on the other aspects of the game

I would be very happy if we could somehow keep him as the assistant coach. Don't he would agree though
