Big Wing player and Rim protector

Masai Ujiri is saying those are our two biggest needs. If we don't sign Lowry that could change but let's assume we re-sign KL/PP/GV. What players are out there that would fit those descriptions?

By rim protector I would have to assume he means a legit backup Center, we certainly don't need a PF unless he's looking to upgrade over AJ. As for wing players with size, the FA pool is pretty slim imo and we might have to go the trade route ........possibly using our pick.

Thoughts?

I would love Jermaine Oneal if he were willing, but I remember he said he would retire if Mark Jackson was fired so..who knows lol.
Is Emeka Okafor a free agent this summer? Maybe he could be a role player after going through that major injury

Raptors74 05-06-2014 06:59 PM

Pretty much exactly what I wanted to be added. Vince/JO would be cool :D Who else are FA's?

ClingRap 05-06-2014 07:01 PM

Gortat is unrestricted, but watching him last night against INdiana (he completely owned them on the glass and in pick and rolls) I'm thinking his price will be quite high and the Wiz will probably resign him. But, him next to JV up front. Yikes.

Emeka Okafor, James Johnson, Joel Anthony, Xavier Henry, PJ Tucker for a quick list.

I think Raps already have their rim protector, it's Amir Johnson. He is called "Dr. Of Denial" for a reason. I just think it's better to bring him off the bench as a back up C/PF.

I'm not sure who they should pursue as a big wing player but I'd prefer the Raps pursue someone younger. Tobias Harris comes to mind for me,not sure if the Magic are willing to part with him though. I think he would be good under Casey and fit well alongside DeRozan or Ross(if they had to move one but ideally it would be better to keep both if possible and bring Terrence off the bench as a 6th man).

Getting a big wing player, or, someone who can matchup defensively with a player like Joe Johnson or Paul Pierce.

Some available players that could fit the bill, although some might be too expensive.

Vince: for obvious reasons, but I'm not sure he'll provide the defensive boost we need on the wing. Could have done a better job for us than DD did not JJ, but I can't imagine it would be a huge upgrade. He was never really known for his defense, even is his brightest days.

Lance Stephenson: He's seemingly volatile, but quite talented. The price tag would be too high, and he would certainly have to start. This would likely stunt Ross' growth and opportunity.

Trevor Ariza: He would be an interesting addition. He's athletic, can score, and still has some left in the tank unlike maybe VC. A little on the skinny side, and might get exploited on D.

Luol Deng: Deng would be a strong wing, with good size. He's improved his shooting considerably over his career from the days when he couldn't even hit a three. It must be noted that somehow the Bulls went on a tear without him in the lineup, kind of like a micro Rudy Gay situation. He would have helped us on the defensive end vs BK, added another proven scorer. He has big-game experience. Not sure what the price tag would be.

Danny Granger: Does he have anything left after his injury woes? He was a quality wing, which a solid skill set in prior to all of his recent struggles. It would be worth a shot if we could get him on a cheap deal, and he showed some promise in rehabbing his knee. Granger at 50% would be an upgrade over Fields, and Salmons, at least on the offensive end.

Agreed, Amir is much better at this point coming off the bench for 25min imo.

I think chemistry shouldn't be overlooked,it's a big reason why this team had success this season. Losing Amir would hurt that alot imo. Yes,he'll be much better off the bench for foul and health purposes,2 things he struggles with.

I just think for his health he'd be better suited coming off the bench. Not only that, the EC will likely be better next season (Chi, NYK, Was, Char) so we need to improve. I just don't want to see 2007-08 again. That season we stayed pretty quiet because we made the playoffs the previous season and it hurt because the weak EC got better.

I also find it extremely interesting to hear that Atlanta is very interested in Greg Monroe considering they have Horford, Milsap.

Rudy Gay and Andrea Bargnani :leo:

Actually HELL NO.....Bargnani is the worst. Don't want that bad luck aura near the team. I guess the same could be said for Gay too.

James Johnson is an interesting idea, and would definitely be in our price range. I guess it all comes down to whether Casey is willing to bury the hatchet or not.

I hope not! I liked him but I'd rather move forward with new blood tbh.

I liked JJ. A lot. He would have been extremely useful in this series. Sort of like a Landry with better offence.

That being said, I don't know how bad his attitude issues were. None of us do. Nor does anyone at all know how much of that was due to the cancerous locker room we had when he was here, and the terrible terrible results.

LX 05-06-2014 07:53 PM

Blair and Ariza would be nice. Boris could be cool. I loved his defense when he played next to Chandler in Charlotte.

I don't expect anything quite that big. It'd be nice.

As for the disappointment the year the came off the playoffs last time, as jeff was mentioning, the biggest issue was TJ getting creamed, not a lack of free agent activity. They need to keep a steady hand and not overreach at this point.

El Barto 05-06-2014 07:55 PM

Okafor, Hill, Kaman or Ed Davis would be nice to protect the rim.

For the wing, I'd like to see someone like Sefolosha. Granger, Butler or Carter would be fine too.

I'd love to see Eddy D back here. He seemed to really excel in limited playing time. He needs to bulk up a lot, and I'm not sure if he'll ever get to even Amir's size, which may rule him out. Better blocker, rebounder, and finisher than Hansborough. Not as prone to fouls either. Would be a nice addition. His character fits with the rest of the guys.
