Berger: Triano has a better chance of staying than Colangelo

Quote:

The Raptors' complicated ownership group has to decide whether to pick up options for Colangelo and coach Jay Triano, and the early indications are that the coach has a better chance of staying. Although ownership was on board with Colangelo's plan to deal with the aftermath of Chris Bosh's departure -- rebuild with youth and picks rather than sacrifice the future -- there's a level of disappointment that the team hasn't accomplished more at this stage of Colangelo's tenure. One source described Colangelo's future as "definitely up in the air." There's also a feeling that Triano has done his part under difficult circumstances to develop young players -- such as Jerryd Bayless, DeMar DeRozan and especially Ed Davis -- and that if someone is going to get blamed, it won't be Triano. That leaves only one other candidate.

If the ownership was on board with BC after the departure of Bosh and the plan to build through youth and the draft, why no support now? The last two draft picks (Derozan and Ed Davis) have developped nicely. Also BC made some minor moves in the youth movement by acquiring some good complementary pieces in James Johnson and Bayless. Is it because BC's pet Andrea Bargnani has been a disapointment this year. Or is it because teams like Utah and Denver have received some good young players and high draft picks by surrending their franchise player. Big gamble and mis-calculation by BC with the loss of Bosh.

It's not about any 'pet' or moves... it's about his price tag. Triano is cheap, BC is not. It's not a good sign for the franchise if BC is let go, it's just a cost saving move.

Agreed.

Bosh leaving for essentially nothing hurt BC's chances of an extension. I think we need some sort of stability in the organization though, I think Colangelo should get another couple of years to try and right the ship and rebuild like he should have. With that said though, the financial situation we are in right now could be Colangelo clearing the deck for a new GM or just playing it safe in case of the new CBA, it's hard to tell. I vote Colangelo to stay.

I finally have to agree with you. His price tag maybe too high, especially if he will be asking a raise. However, how do you give a well compensated employee a raise who has a losing record during his tenure, and had some big league strikeouts with some of his moves as GM. Especially giving a raise to your high price employee when the overall revenue of the entreprise will drop with the drop in ticket prices.

up in the air describes pretty much everything until the ownership issue is settled. I hope it happens sooner rather than later, or it could be pretty depressing.

I want BC to stay. Although all the mishaps he's had during his stay here in Toronto, he still made some nice moves here and there. He also set us up pretty well going into the future. His draft picks in DD and Davis have shown improvement in their game and bright spots on this team. Acquiring Bayless was a good deal and getting JJ was like drafting DD and JJ in the 2009 draft; two picks in one draft. For me, we have a brighter future compared to some other teams in the NBA
