Raptors Berger: Raptors pursuing Pritchard, Weaver. Ujiri in talks with Denver

Quote:
MIAMI -- The Toronto Raptors have asked permission to interview Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard to head up their basketball operations, league sources told CBSSports.com on Friday.

As with similar requests from teams to speak with assistant coach Brian Shaw for head coaching vacancies, the Pacers have indicated that they prefer to wait until their season is over to grant permission for interviews. The Pacers trail the Heat 1-0 in the Eastern Conference finals, with Game 2 on Friday night in Miami.

Pritchard, the former Trail Blazers GM who was hired by the Pacers at the behest of former team president Larry Bird, is said to be extremely happy in Indiana. The Raptors recently overhauled their front office structure, moving team president Bryan Colangelo to a role on the business side and opening up the search for a new head of basketball operations.

he Raptors job is attractive to potential candidates because the team does well financially and is prepared to commit significant resources to restoring the team to prominence. Former Staples Center executive Tim Leiweke is in full command of the Raptors' decision-making process and vision as president and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment.

League sources told CBSSports.com that one of the possibilities Leiweke has identified is teaming Pritchard with Oklahoma City assistant GM Troy Weaver, whose name has been attached to several front-office searches in the past two years. It is not clear whether the Raptors have reached out to the Thunder to ask permission to interview Weaver, though it is highly unlikely that Oklahoma City would grant permission for Weaver to entertain a lateral move.

Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri, the reigning NBA executive of the year, remains high on the Raptors' list of potential candidates. Ujiri is engaged in talks with the Nuggets on a contract extension, though it is widely presumed in league circles that the notoriously frugal Nuggets would not be inclined to enter a bidding war to retain Ujiri.

We're going to have a shitload of GM's, former GM's, and future GM's. It's going to be a GM factory.

I have a feeling the new GM won't need to do anything major to the roster, except move Bargs, which is part of what makes it an attractive destination.

The starting 5 looks solid, and there should be substantial internal growth from the roster, so the team should get better, even if nothing is done.

Though, I do wonder if Leiweke would be satisfied if a GM candidate were to tell him that.

Leiweke: "So, if you were GM, what would you do to make the team better?"

Candidate: "Bryan did a fine job building this team, so I plan to do next to nothing. Just fill the holes with free agent vets, and provide the stability this young team needs to get better. We don't even have a draft pick, so I plan to do almost no decision making this season. Just sit back, and watch my bank account grow. Cha ching!"

No/few moves to make, no capspace......how is that attractive?

IMO one of Gay/Derozan will be moved. If so hopefully it's derozan.

Yes, hopefully DeRozan. Gotta keep the guy that had his worst season and will look to sign for the max, and trade the guy that had his best and will look to get better yet.

Here is a interesting question:

Would you move Gay for other pieces that also include 2014 first round picks?

Move derozen aswell for 2014 first rounder...

Basically, blow up the team, tank this coming season and roll the dice on Winggins and the rest of the supposedly stacked draft class of 2014?

Max?

He gets Max now and everyone knows he's over payed. No way he gets another max contract unless he becomes an all-star in the next 2 seasons. And even then he'll be pushing 29.

Well, there's a difference between max and what he makes. He makes more than the technical "max" he would sign for as a free agent if not for his current salary. So even with a paycut he could be close to a max player upon re-signing.

i would say his next deal is in the 4yrs/48-50mil range. of course that could change depending on his performance the next couple seasons.

So, about 1.5 M short of the max (for young players). And that slight change if he improves a bit the next couple seasons means he makes max level money again.

Years in NBA 1 Max
0 - 6 25% of cap2 $13,668,750
7 - 9 30% of cap2 $16,402,500
10+ 35% of cap2 $19,136,250

Gay will earn close to a starting max contract, and with some improvement, could well sign for his age group max contract (a pay cut of 3 million). He might drop off the cliff, but if he doesn't, that's where his salary will end up.

Masai's relationships in Toronto are strong. This is the 1 team, IMO, he'd consider leaving for. Moneys a factor, but not the lone factor.

can't we look for some stability for once in the starting lineup? our problem wasn't in the starting lineup, it was our bench (after ocho). they've played less than half a season together. jesus fook.

demar is a keeper

I really wouldn't be all that surprised if he does this offseason, along with improved defence
