Default Being A Back-up Isn't Sitting Well With Ford

Something isn't right because demeanor has been down right horrible these last couple games and is the same stuff that I was talking about earlier this week when I was criticizing him because of the constant sour bitter look on his face.

Anyhow, looks like playing second fiddle to Jose is taking a toll on Ford now. He better suck it up because if he doesn't it going to be a huge distraction to this team come playoff time.

Quote:
If his body language in the couple of games before last night had been translated into words, you'd have shielded your kids' ears. Tuesday in Orlando, non-plussed he'd been hooked from the game, Ford made a 20-foot walk to the bench look more like a procession to the electric chair. It wasn't the only outward expression of his discontent.

"T.J.'s a good guy. He's a good person," said Darrick Martin, Ford's fellow point guard. "He's just working through some issues and he'll be fine."
Quote:
He acknowledged his behaviour was drawing the wrong kind of attention from certain superiors, but he didn't exactly apologize for it.

"I guess that's the knock against me, man," said Ford. "I think I'm an emotional person. But I think people look at me like I have a problem sometimes, when I really don't. I'm fine."

Exclamation TJ Starting to Crack under Pressure...

Quote:
Back-up job leaves Ford in a funk

MIAMI–Less than an hour before tipoff last night, the visitors' locker room was gripped with a minor mystery: The whereabouts of T.J. Ford appeared to be in doubt.

"Where is he?" one teammated wondered.

"Is he here?" asked another.

The only sign of Ford was a clean uniform hanging in his locker above a pile of his personal effects. While most of his colleagues had already broken their pre-game sweat, Ford had yet to disrobe from his street clothes. Shrugs were shared. Heads were shook. Observations were made.

"He ain't going nowhere without that backpack," said Joey Graham, pointing to Ford's Louis Vuitton carryall.

It turned out Ford was not a flight risk ā la Rafer Alston, the former Raptor who threatened to quit the game after his feelings were hurt a few seasons back. But Ford did spend more than an hour in a pair of pre-game meetings, one with Mark Eversley, the club's director of basketball operations, another with Sam Mitchell, the head coach.

"I had some personal issues I had to attend to," said Ford. "I don't think that's going to affect (the game), though. I'm good."

What issues? He wouldn't elaborate. But while Ford has said publicly he is comfortable with Jose Calderon as the starting point guard, he hasn't exactly acted as though he's at peace. Calderon got the job when Ford went down with injuries that have kept him out of 31 of the team's 60 games; Calderon has remained the starter in the month or so since Ford's return.

Perhaps drama was inevitable. It was said in this space and others that Toronto's point-guard platoon worked last season and at the beginning of this one largely because Ford was the starter. His ego, it was surmised here, wouldn't take well to being a No. 2. And that wasn't necessarily a knock against him.

Still, it'll be difficult to upturn the batting order now, because Ford isn't necessarily the guy the Raptors are worried about ticking off. Calderon, playing awfully well in the first five, is heading into a summer in which he'll be a presumably-coveted restricted free agent, and the Raptors have repeatedly asserted their desire to keep him. Ford, locked up through 2011, might have to live with the status quo.

The Texan, who often carries himself on the court with scowling swagger that belies his locker-room sense of humour, hasn't had an easy season. He was taken off the floor in Atlanta on a stretcher after a dastardly December fall. Born with a narrowing of the spine that puts him at greater risk for spinal injuries than an average person, the scare had him contemplating retirement before he committed to a return to the court.

Last night he played 22 largely scowl-free minutes, scoring 13 points while racking up five assists and three turnovers. He acknowledged his behavior was drawing the wrong kind of attention from certain superiors, but he didn't exactly apologize for it.

"I guess that's the knock against me, man," said Ford. "I think I'm an emotional person. But I think people look at me like I have a problem sometimes, when I really don't. I'm fine."

I don't get Ford at all.

You'd think after having serious health issues which question his longevity in the game, he'd be a little more up-beat about playing good team besketball. and he'd maybe see the bigger picture (i.e. not trying to play the game so damn personal).

I really don't understand what his problem is.

I for one, was wrong about him. I had thought that he was being unfairly painted by fans, but it appears as though he needs a serious attitude adjustment.

whats worse is that it seems like this attitude has really taken Sam and the coaching staff by the throats.

sam is afraid to take ford out at times... he seems weary to do so because it will look like a punishment for playing badly or taking ill advised shots.

i think sam is afraid to bench ford and make him unhappy.

it seems as though their plan is to insert Jose as the SG when ford is playing bad, therefore it doesnt look like a "i'm taking you out for playing crappy and subbing you with our better PG"...
then a few minutes later, they take out TJ.
its so stupid. he has to get dealt or it will start eating away at our chemistry slowly.

I'm pretty sure Sam isn't afraid of TJ and it looks like he is doing something about it by having a private meeting with him.

well, he played much better last night after said meeting. So if that's what it's gonna take (sit down meetings before every game), that's what it's gonna take.

the more you see this situation unfold, the more you see that Ford looks like one of those guys that just doesn't "get it."

too bad for us. and too bad for the team.

Keep in mind this is all speculation...for all we really know his dog got run over by a Hummer in a classic Texas drive-by. Whatever it is i hope he comes around...last night was better than the night before but still not the old TJ.

I'm not saying this to be spiteful ACIE, but Ford has probably the biggest ego on this team. Players with large contracts usually dictate certain behaviour, but he's clearly letting these "personal" issues get the best of him and is looking far from being a professional. In turn dare I say, slowly becoming a cancer in the lockeroom.

yeah, but in the big picture, Graham means nothing to the team, whereas as TJ Ford is much more important to our future. - regardless if he gets traded or stays here, it's best that Sam and management do everything they can to diffuse this situation before some real shit goes down.

TJ needs to do some reflecting. He should be happy that he's healthy enough to play ball. He should be happier with less minutes so his body (health) can last longer, and the longevity of his career can be extended. All he needs to show is quality minutes and his contract will always be extended, and he will always be a hot commodity.

He also needs to remember what happened to (unhappy) Dixon, who now needs to work his way from the end of the bench and compete and fight against other bench players just to see some court-time. So, TJ should be so thankful that he automatically comes in for Calderon. If he continues to be unhappy he will find himself in another team, in the same predicament as Dixon.

Count your blessings TJ and use them wisely!

Yeah, but these guys all have egos. You would too if you'd been pampered and told how great you were since Grade 8 and really we have no real idea what's going on other than what Feschuk (who doesn't seem to know the whole story himself) has written.

but thats kinda what i'm getting at...
sam may not be afraid of TJ in the exact definition of the word, but he's afraid of what his attitude could do to the team.
he's afraid that subbing him out for jose could cause alot of friction between everyone.
TJ may (i bet he's already started to) resent Jose... or vice versa.
TJ is seeing his "leadership" on this team disapeer, and he's seeing jose take over.
so just a little move by sam to bench ford could cause huge ripples in the pond.
sam is afraid that TJ will take it personally and it will in turn destroy this team from the inside.

Some of you guys are really good consipiracy theorists..you should work for major newspapers and get some serious money.

Sam isn't afraid of anything... remember how he handled Rose and Wince (the two stars) when they weren't doing what they were supposed to? Remember when Garbo was sucking but there was a lot of pressure to play him... he sat.

I think it's more accurate to say that Sam and TJ have a good relationship... Sam knows TJ and what he's capable of and he's going to give him a long leash in order to get where he needs to go.

We've never once actually heard anyone on the Raptors team say anything to suggest TJ is becoming a problem in the locker room...this is speculation gone wild.

When you meet with Mark Eversley it is no longer an on court problem....It is a personel problem.

Hell, i'm afraid of that! We should all be, if this crap doesn't stop soon!

That's kind of why i think it's a good thing for Sam and Basketball operations guy to have these sit downs with TJ before it gets worse.
