Raptors BC gets pretty good grades for draft choices

Found this at Realgm.

Quote:

USA TODAY: Toronto Raptors: B-

"Washington guard Terrence Ross was a low-risk pick, but there were better wings available at No. 8. Baylor forward Quincy Acy, picked 37th has athleticism and energy that could make him a valuable contributor off the bench. Croatian forward Tomislav Zubcic, 56th, was a stowaway project who likely will never play in the NBA. Overall, a ho-hum draft that gets a ho-hum grade."

NBADRAFT.NET: Toronto Raptors: A

"Toronto clearly went with the guy who they thought was the best on the board. Ross has so many NBA qualities that it's easy to understand how they could pass on Austin Rivers. Ross was one of our favorite players and could become the top SG from this year's class. He should turn out to be an excellent pick for the Raptors, blending with Demar Derozan at the 2/3 positions. Quincy Acy also has a lot of likeable qualities with a high motor and a huge wingspan."

CBSSPORTS.COM: Toronto Raptors: A-

"Terrence Ross (8): It's a reach, there's no question. But Jeremy Lamb's not really a small forward, and Harkless was more of a reach. Ross fills the need and shoots, the weakness in DeRozan's game. It's a good fit, even if it's a bit early. Moving down would have raised the grade.

Quincy Acy (37): They love hard-hustling guys in Toronto, and that's Acy. We'll see if he can convert it to production. They loved Reggie Evans who was similar.

Tomislav Zubic (56): When he wins the Raptors a title, the headline will be "Zubic circonium!," right?"

SPORTING NEWS: Toronto Raptors (ungraded)

"Ross is a big shooter, but he’s not an elite shooter. Doron Lamb and John Jenkins will convert deep NBA shots at a much higher rate, but neither has Ross’ height, length or jumping ability. Lamb and Jenkins don’t play much of the game above the rim; Ross does. That allows scouts to project that he can grow into a strong wing scorer as his jumper matures into a more dangerous weapon.

Ross has a lovely, compact stroke. But for someone who has a rep as a shooter and who took plenty of deep shots, he didn’t hit even 38 percent in either of his two college seasons. And he only shot 77 percent from the foul line. Lamb and Jenkins would weep at those numbers.

Ross is a solid, defensible pick. But until he polishes that jumpshot into something fearsome, he might struggle to see the floor."

FOX SPORTS: Toronto Raptors (ungraded)

"The Raptors look at this as their second lottery pick, with last year's pick Jonas Valanciunas set to join them. With him in the fold, Toronto felt like they could pass on the tumbling Andre Drummond and take one of the draft's most athletic wingmen in Ross. He was trapped on a dysfunctional Washington team last year, so many folks didn't get a chance to see just how good Ross really is. He has remarkably deep range on his jumper and he loves to get out and run on the break. Think of him as a high-character, smarter, defensive-minded, doesn't-fade-away-on-every-jumper-for-no-reason J.R. Smith. Strong pick."

YAHOO SPORTS: Toronto Raptors (ungraded)

"Mike Huguenin's Analysis: Ross went much higher than most expected. He is athletic and offense-minded, and the Raptors need scorers. He is 6-foot-6, but needs to add weight (he’s only 190) and strength. Can he play defense against NBA perimeter guys?"

ESPN, Chad Ford: Toronto Raptors (ungraded)

"An interesting pick for the Raptors. Toronto wanted a shooter to pair with DeMar DeRozan, and Ross is a good shooter and a terrific athlete. A bit of a reach here. I like Ross, but just didn't quite see him in this range. -- Chad Ford"

Also from CBS Sportsline, the only one I've looked at, the grade on Drummond as the next pick.

Detroit Pistons

Andre Drummond (9): He's so talented, so physically gifted, but Joe Dumars needed more of a sure thing. Drummond is a nice kid -- too nice. He doesn't play with much intensity, hasn't developed any low-post moves and has a mediocre basketball IQ. I hate to kill this pick because, again, Drummond is a high-character kid. But this was a major risk, even at number nine.

Khris Middleton (39): Solid pick for Dumars; Middleton is a skilled wing who can shoot it from the perimeter.

Kim English (44): Has size and can shoot the ball from the perimeter. Quality selection in the middle of the second round.

GRADE: D+

I dont see the logic in giving a team a D+ for picking a player who was supposed to be in the top 5 that dropped into their laps.

Mediocre BB IQ, horrible ft%(think hack-a-Drummond), low passing ability for a big man and lacks aggression.....but he is a nice guy. There's a reason he fell and I agree with the D+....Dumars is wreaking havoc on that team and needed something with less 'potential' and more action. If I were Detroit, I would trade Drummond with Milwaukee. The Bucks have Gooden and Ilyasova already at the 4 which surprised me with the Henson pick. Honestly I would trade Drummond for Henson/Dalembert

Ilyasova is a FA.

I'm pretty impressed that the US media isn't kicking Toronto's rep in the ass this morning. I think there are generally some real support out there for JV, and now with the talk of Nash or Lowry/Iggy/Whoever coming here, the media has taken Toronto out of the Doghouse and are starting to hop on the wagon.

This can only help this franchise as far as PR goes, I'm pretty satisfied with that. I even posted last night that they were gonna eat BC alive. Hell, I am very HAPPY to stand corrected!!!!

I like what we did w/ our picks...Tross
If either Barns, Lillard and Waiters is there and we didn't pick any of them then it was a bad draft night for us...

I bit surprise that we didn't pick drummond but yeah it’s a high risk and i supposed the front office doesn't want that risk...beside we already have JV coming in. Rivers is good but i really can't see how he will fit on our team with his kind of play...

Seen Acy play before and like him a lot - hard worker and he know his role...ala magloire...but more competitive

I'm hoping we will add nash into this young core and i can see that this is where its gearing up...

BC slip off and said that we have 11 to 23mil and a reporter questions on how we can do that, are we going for amnesty...BC: yes it we want to go up to 23mil...reading between the lines this means that JC will be it because we have a new point guard...no need to keep 2 starting PG...by this we will have 23mil cap...we can then go for another FA...hopefully batum...IMO

btw i like JC but even w/ nash's expected decline i like him more...we however need to look for a future PG maybe on next year’s draft or ben uzoh...
