Default BC Would Consider Going Over Luxury Tax For Stretch Run

Good to hear, but if he's going to do so it would have to be for an impact player in my opinion. Not a "what if" one.

What he said. MLSE are such tight-asses, they wouldn't allow that. It's all about making money, not about spending it (what they should realize is that you have to spend money to make money. Going over the tax threshold by 5 million is going to yield them so much more in ticket sales, a deeper playoff run = more gates, more merchandise and more concession sales )

to me it sounds as though Brian has had talks with the board about this very issue. Note how he uses the word "we."

Looks like i t may be a possibility.

There is no doubt it will be a possibilty.

There is no way MLSE will spent 60 million on a team thats not winning and isnt willing to spent an extra 4 or 5 on a team that would winn more.

Winning generates revenue.
Spend money to make money.

If they are a business then they will understand that spending money could lead to a championship and considering that they're attempting to build a global brand, then it would make sense to spend the money to make even greater money.

I think the lessons they learned with the Leafs i.e. people can only stand mediocrity for so long, may finally be sinking in.

my guess is that when Bryan came here, he got assurances that luxury tax is not the ultimate barrier. After all, one of the reasons he left there was the owner who was too cheap to do it, even though they were on the brink of winning a title.

MLSE is not "cheap", after all, they just installed a 8 million dollars screen at ACC when there was no pressing need. The problem is that MLSE looks at things from a business perspective. On the hockey side, there are other interests in place, but on "our" side, I think business sense is all that matters.

Finally, don't think for a moment that Bryan doesn't already know whether we can go over or not. That decision was probably made a long time ago - and my guess is that it was approved. The only question is when to go over - and Bryan will proably have to make a compelling argument to the board that such a move is worth it.

Maybe we can get Harrington here, since he's unhappy in GSW.

it's not like you can buy your way to a championship. NYK have already tried that, and it failed miserably. You have to spend wisely, because there are other issues in play beyond pure money. You can destroy your flexibility for a one-time shot at something, the goal is to build a perennial contender, not a second version of the Miami Heat.

Well yeah, cnt just spend to spend.

On the other hand, you cant allow something like luxury tax prevent you from picking up important pieces.

I'd feel a lot more confident about it if the dollar could get back up to around parity with the US greenback. Without that it's almost like we're paying a tax of sorts relative to other teams.

Things could've changed since this morning, but wasn't the greenback trading at a lower level today? As long as the dollar hovers around the 85-88 cent mark then I think we'll be fine in regards to being able to spend.

Yeah - I think it'll move in the right direction, especially if oil goes up at all. Let's cross our fingers for more high gas prices? There's no winning is there.

And that's only thanks to Jose restructuring his new deal a bit.

jose doesn't hold a candle to arenas who "restructured" 20 millions or so ...
Of course, Jose is actually worth every penny, unlike gilbert who is not worth all that much even when he's healthy

And there again, you get another glimpse into the genius that is Bryan Colangelo. You have to believe that this was said to the players too... which helps with everything internally. Saying something like this, this early in the season to the players makes them think -hey, if we're close, and maybe need something to address a glaring need, then it can still be done -, hopefully, thus helping the team to aspire to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, and not just a middle of the pack team. IMO this was a calculated move.
