Default BC Talks about his 2012 Draft Screwup

How do professional teams draft the right athletes? - thestar.com

Quote:
Picking eighth, I passed on somebody I consider a top-five talent in the draft because we felt like he didn’t have the right mental makeup. I passed on someone we thought was a top-three physical specimen because we felt he wasn’t the right fit for our team and didn’t have the right mental makeup.
Terrible.

Same reason most teams ahead of us passed on him. He's a mental midget.

What is terrible about it? How WOULD you want your GM to think in such spots? Haters gonna hate...

i'm of the belief that you always pick the guy who is more talented no matter what.

People have the capacity to change, to mature. It may or may not happen in time, but it can happen.

Ironically, Andre Drummond was picked No. 9 with the Detroit Pistons. Ten years ago, BC made a gamble on a high school kid named Amare Stoudemire with the No. 9 pick. An immature kid whose mother was in and out of prison, attended six different high schools in two different states, and whose brother died when he was 12. Phoenix was the only team to pick a high school player in the first round of the 2002 NBA draft. Considering the unstable background and raw potential of Amare, BC took the gamble and won.

He seems to be a consensus guy these days, not sure if he was back then at least to this degree. We don't know what the scouts were telling him and what was discussed in the room and leading into the draft between him and Stefanski. There is a reason he dropped from a top 3 prospect (#1 18 months ago) to nearly droping out of the top 10. It's amazing how we all love to say someone made a mistake when making a draft pick when it comes to 20yr olds. IMO they picked Ross because he's a very good athlete, can defend and can shoot. I don't have a problem whatsoever with that pick. It may or may not turnout, but that's always the case with young players, especially when you get out of the top 5.

he seems to be talking about 2 guys - one a physical specimen (likely drummond) and one a top-5 talent. i wonder if the other guy is royce white?

I do believe analytics is a huge component to what we’re doing. We’ve even got a camera system — six cameras installed above. I’m sure hockey will someday utilize this. The cameras take 24 shots per second. The amount of data mined from this camera data is incredible. If you look at a boxscore, you’re looking at about 800 points of data. We’re looking at 800,000 points of data per game. We’re one of 12 teams with the system in place.
fantastic.

also interesting that he would say this publicly.

Our combine has really become somewhat of a joke. Not all the players show up. The agents have controlled the process. It’s gotten worse each year.
colangelo was easily the most revealing of the 4 gms here.

If only we got Barnes Our SF problems would be solved also! We would have every position settled easily and getting prepared for the future.

I'd rather get an experienced SF in here to be honest.

True but you would rather have Barnes wouldn't you? He fills the gap at the 3 much better than we need Ross at 2. If we get Barnes here, there isn't a NEED to grab a 3 from another team like there is now. Almost not even close. Barnes is another good piece to the young core.

If Royce White was even considered that would have been a colossal disaster.
Kids a mental case that will never be an NBA player.
You don't be a window washer then complain about your fear of heights and expect people to be sympathetic towards you.
Same as you don't try to get a job that requires a ton of flying/travelling.

I have a feeling next year derozan will bulk up enough to play the sf, making room for ross who will come out and have a breakout year in terms of going to the basket. lowry, ross, and derozan, we'll have the best backcourt in the nba! Bargnani will cut down to 5 percent body fat and become the best pf in the league, and JV will finally get some respect from the refs. raps go on to win th championship, sweeping every team in every round
