Default BC to meet with Messina

Quote:
The Raptors aren't distinct in considering Italian Ettore Messina as their head coach for next season, I'm informed. Two fail-safe sources reveal the Kings also are contemplating turning over the sidelines to the first ever non-American.

Currently coaching Cska Moscow, Messina was recently contacted by a Sacramento representative regarding interest in an interview. It's in stone Raptors president Bryan Colangelo plans to meet with Messina during the European Final Four in Berlin (Barcelona vs. Cska, and Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos) beginning May 1.

That's official. Unofficially, I hear the Nets have made it known they intend to reach out to him as well.

mm yeah, going to be tough not to lose Ettore Messina to the basketball meccas that are New jersey and Sacramento. I'm sure there's a lot of draw there...

What makes Toronto more of a "mecca"?

New jersey has a lot of good young talent and excellent management (Kiki/Thorne)

Sacramento has some nice young pieces, quite possibly the #1 draft pick in this years draft, cap space in 2010...

even in terms of talent we have more young pieces than both sacramento and NJ ...

but the major advantages are that we are a cosmopolitan city, with a european-centric management and many european players who know who messina is. All that will make him much more likely to succeed than in any other place in USA.

I'm referring to fan support more than anything else.

You could probably hear a pin drop during the fourth quarter in both of those arenas. At least New jersey is moving ship to Brooklyn. Sacramento is a dead franchise as far as I'm concerned - they need fan support to raise money to build a new arena, but they have no fans, and the fans that are left are slowly being converted to LA fans.

Personally, I'd put toronto on par with NJ as far as potential near success goes (given their current rosters) - actually, Toronto's better the more i think about it (depending on a few factors).

Given the lifestyle of the city and the strength of the fans along with the seemingly international makeup of the team and organization, i would give Toronto the edge.

IMO, Sac-town is the least inviting option.

Really, you gotta ask yourself. Who really wants to live in Newark?

Manhattan I understand. Brooklyn has even gotten better. But Newark? C'mon.

And all the Nets really have is Lopez and Harris. Nice pieces. The rest are future role players really. And Sacramento has no real guy to build around, just real nice pieces in Martin and Hawes. Again the rest are just role players. At least we have 24 yr. old all-star who's a legit top 10-15 player in the league. Best asset we have right now.

The Nets do have quite a bit of cap space coming their way next season though. If the move to Brooklyn materializes, you do have to think they're a more attractive option.

I do think we're more enticing than Sacramento though, especially with the unrest about that franchise's future.

If they do indeed move, then it's a very attractive situation. heck yes.

I just think it's extremely short-sighted to think we're head and shoulders above these destinations.

I dunno Acie.

I think we're a far more attractive option than either of the two. Really the only way we "come down" is IF we lose Bosh for nothing.

It'd be my guess that Messina is going to want to be in a city where not only is the basketball opportunity promising, but also where he's comfortable.

A European-esque city is going to provide that comfort just because it's what the man knows. Sacramento and Brooklyn are as non-European as cities can come. Montreal doesn't have a team, so Toronto seems to be the rational choice, if you're JUST talking city.

Not to mention if Chuck Swirsky would have been the one to say it he would be openly flamed for homerism.

I really don't think atmoshpere is going to be that big of a deal.

I mean he coaches in Moscow right now, which if I'm not mistaken despite all of it's Old World charm is the crime capital of Europe.
