Default Bayless as a Starter

I know the sample size is small, but what is everyone's opinion on Bayless' play in extended minutes? Personally I've been really impressed. His decision making has improved tremendously since he first got here, and he's shown he can create for teammates. I also noticed a certain chemistry with DeMar which is encouraging.

I'd like to see Calderon traded this summer regardless of who's at point guard, but if Bayless keeps this play up to the end of the season I'm pretty confident with having him start at point guard next year. I read somewhere that our record with him starting is 3-6, and that's not bad considering this squad.

I'd like to see him start the rest of the season to really gauge it a little better but whenever he's started he's usually upped his game for sure. Him and Irving or Walker would be fun to watch next season.

Last season at this time Weems became a starter. Suddenly he was playing better.
Same with Amir, end of last season - started, cut down on fouls, kept excellent production.

Confidence and consistency can grow when you are not in danger to be pulled off the floor and cut down on minutes due to what you do right now. And the games are less important.

This starting gig will do good for Bayless in long term, but it doesn't mean that he suddenly became a legit starter.

Can anyone pull his stats for the 9 games he's started...personal and team? I have the impression they're pretty good....tells me it might be a bit in his head that he presses too hard when not starting because he probably feels worthy of the role.

This is a good read about Bayless as a starter.

Thanks...it would be nice to see the team's offensive numbers, like shooting percentages, efficiency etc... but this is a good start.

i'm always a little skeptical of guys who are inconsistent and whose play isn't scalable with minutes. especially young guys. if you want starter's reigns, you need to show that you can be counted on consistently.

that he's a much better choice than jose, going forward, but i've made that argument before.

he is our best shooter on this team

but he doesn't seem like a PG
he looks like he has the SG skillset in a PG body

He is definitely not our best shooter. Even Jack Armstrong keeps pointing out he needs to work on shooting in the summer. Shouldn't be hard though, he has his good stretches shooting the ball. Just incosistent.

Jose is probably our best shooter, but just a better passer. Barbosa would be next.

By this logic, we should start at least 7 guys, better yet - 10.

He has been shooting well these past two games and ran the team much better for about the past 10 games. I'd like to at least play him a lot of minutes for the rest of the season to get a better feel for his abilities, but the sample is still going to be too small.

Depending on whom they draft this summer, Calderon may or may not become expendable. For instance, Irving or Walker becoming a Raptor is a clear signal that either Caldy or Bayless are out since both are too good to be a 3rd string option. Drafting someone like Barnes changes this picture entirely.

Bayless has a tremendous threshold. He straight wears fools out through strengh and conditioning. It's an aspect to his game that was rarely utilized in Portland. But when we saw it, it was an awesome experience to watch.

The #1 thing Bayless provides is defensive pressure, something Jose is not capable of doing...

He doesn't get too many steals though just like Calderon and Nash because like those guys he has short arms.

I don't think so. His defense is much better than it was last year, with little clapping being done, and he can actually stick with the opposing teams point guards now.
