Default Batum being worked out today

From Feschuk:

Quote:
With less than two weeks until the June 28 draft, the club, which holds the 17th overall pick, will continue its research today in Oakland, where the Golden State Warriors are hosting a multi-player workout a handful of NBA franchises will attend. Among the featured is Nicolas Batum, the 19-year-old French forward Kelly called "intriguing."

"He's very young," said Kelly, who will be in Oakland. "So, do we want a direct impact or are we willing to wait a little bit for him?"
Chad Ford has him as the second-best international prospect behind Danilo.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft...tionals-080613

Quote:
Batum looked like a lock for the 2007 lottery after last year's scintillating Hoop Summit performance. But inexplicably, Batum decided against entering the draft. And he has fallen under much harsher scrutiny this year.

Batum has the athleticism, size and skill set to thrive in the NBA. But he lacks the assertiveness (or confidence) to live up to his potential right now -- he struggles to create offense for himself. An unimpressive performance at the Reebok Eurocamp this month didn't help his cause.

A lot of teams will look at him closely from No. 15 on down, but who will pull the trigger? As it stands, there's no guarantee Batum goes in the first round; teams later in the draft will worry about getting Batum to come to the NBA on the cheap.
From Smith:
Quote:
Sometimes you go to independent observers to get the information you need and when I saw a buddy from L’Equipe around practice, I knew I had to have a chat.

Here’s a take on Nicolas Batum from someone entirely disassociated with the Raptors, or him (and I paraphraise)

"Great athlete, long, good shooting range, needs to grow into his body because he’s still not strong enough. Good kid, very high basketball IQ, was a leader of a French team that won the European junior championship. He’ll be primarily a three in the NBA but could guard twos if he had to. Mature of his age but still some questions about his mental toughness on the court but all indications are he’ll get it.”

I almost prefer there is not a lot of hype about this kid. If toronto trully cant get anything really ready for the NBA in the draft I dont have anything against picking him.

I think he will be good. The problem is how long will it take and if Toronto is willing to wait.

This could be a bad comparison but I almost see him as a player with Boris Diaw's skillset maybe not the versatility.

Or maybe I'm making this comparison because they're both French, I dunno.

But the more I read about this kid, it just seems that they're the same player skill set wise.

Worries me, his struggles in the euroleague...his team is awful, 2-12 in euroleague regular season, he averages like 8ppg, i think the Raptors could use players that have a killer instinct, at least that are bread into success...one of my main problems was the raps in ability to execute in the late stages of games, just feels as if none of there players wanted the ball, id rather see us draft someone who is use to winning, understands how to play in high-stress late game situations, batum seems far from that

No matter who you draft your always taking chances, but some are more risky and not immediate impacts more than others. Batum based on what I've read everywhere over these last couple weeks seems like another experiment that is going to take years to develop.

Again, no thank you.

The Xenophobia on this board is embarrassing.

Totally.

I could make a list as long as my arm of good, tough European and South American Players.

Get your heads out your arses.

Sorry SJ, but there's nothing tough about Bargnani. Doesn't matter how you choose to paint that picture.

If you think Bosh is a pussy, then what does that make Andrea?

You guys aren't saying, no more Andrea Bargnani, you're saying no more Euro pussies.

Sorry bud, but I can handle no more pussies, no need to add the place they are from.

Thats all.

I'm right.

Deal.

My bone to pick isn't towards Euros in general. It's strictly pertaining to Bargnani and Bargnani only. I'd love more Euros if they can contribute like the Jorge's, Rasho's and Jose's have.

It's the comment that Chad Ford made about Batum lacking confidence and assertiveness that wreaks of Andrea. That's why I said what I did.

I'd like to see one of the tough guys here get hacked and thrown to the ground by a 6'9, 250lbs. man, smash their face off the ground, knock a tooth out and get up and drain a couple of free throws.

It has nothing to do with "Regular Joe's" here being tough or not tough enough to take an NBA hack and bump. These guys are professionals for a reason. Some more so than others. Believe me, I'm '6'0 and 250 lbs myself so I could handle my own. Against Shaq, maybe not.

We just still have yet to admit that Bargnani's a borderline bust. Next season will be the defining one for Andrea.

I know, I know...I've seen you back Shaq down in the post with your big toilet.

I think Bargs is tougher than we give him credit for. Playing hurt and not whining about it, getting smacked out and then coming back the next night and taking it to the hole relentlessly, guarding bigger stronger guys and not backing down...

I wasn't implying that I could actually score on a NBA player. But I know I could kick alot of their asses and I'm saying this not as an ITG either. Have you seen how a basketball player throws a punch.

we don't need another risk. Raptors need to dig deeper into the playoffs. 2nd>3rd round would be pleasant i'd rather they draft a consistent center than a wing. we can trade tj for that.
