Default Bargnani's defense

There's no question that Bargnani has taken a major step forward this season. His offensive output is off the charts, until this game he was 19th in TS% and had a PER in the 20s, good for top 25 in the league. His rebounding is up, his post game is much improved and his confidence is higher. Even Hollinger had this to say about him today in an article about early season standouts:
Quote:
Andrea Bagnani's breakout
Bryan Colangelo took a lot of heat from some quarters (ahem) for his $50 million extension for Bargnani, and certainly the Toronto Raptors' alleged center still has much to prove at the defensive end. But offensively, he's been lights out through the first eight games, helping Toronto to the league lead in offensive efficiency.

The 7-footer is 17-of-35 on 3-pointers, but what's really made a difference is the new-found diversity in his offensive game. Bargnani has shown more willingness to put it on the floor and even (gasp) post up on occasion, resulting in 20.1 points per game and a steady diet of closer shots to supplement the long-distance game
And yet, he's still taking a lot of heat for his defense and rebounding. Defense is a complex set of skills, and few players are good in all aspects. There's post defense, man-to-man, perimeter, P&R, team defense, defensive intensity (ability to maintain good defense throughout the game), communication and so on. For a big man, the most important tangible areas are probably post defense, team defense and P&R defense.

In terms of post defense, andrea is pretty decent, definitely above average. He's still underpowered, but he's tall and mobile and can block shots which makes him a tough man to attack in the post, unless you can overpower him.
The best proof for this is that you rarely see teams even trying to attack him one on one anymore (except for centers who can overpower him like shaq or marc gasol).

Of course, traditionally, the knock on Andrea was that his team defense is very bad, and I think this year we have seen an improvement. He's still below average, but he's no longer useless as a team defender.

However, where I think Andrea is failing miserably is P&R defense. To me, this and Jose's general weakness are by far the main reasons why we are so horrible on D this season. I don't understand why, as with his mobility and size he should be very good at this type of defense. Instead, everytime he is drawn outside, something very bad happens for us, either the guard just splits the D, or the big man rolls to the basket, or andrea is left in no man's land, trying to find somebody to guard. And again, a proof for this is how often chicago ran P&R with noah tonight, and almost never against Bosh, who is a very strong P&R defender.

Am I right in this?

It's not just the pick and roll. He has taken a step back altogether from where he was at the end of last season. Or maybe Marion's abilities helped make up for Bargnani's weaknesses, but I don't think that's the whole story. He moved his feet much better, and made himself much more of a presence last season. Now he takes breathers when he should be helping from the weak side, does nothing to gain position on the boards or prevent others from gaining positional advantages, and is just completely lazy on rotations and run-outs.

Watch last night's game - it's pretty contemptible and it was actually not nearly his worst showing. This team looked entirely lost with him out there, and entirely competitive when he was off the floor. Count on Hollinger to choose to praise him at this point. Bargnani's play has been a disgrace to the game. He really has to show me that he actually wants to play this game. That would mean wanting to guard someone and have some kind of hunger to get a rebound. Jose does not deserve to be mentioned alongside him. Jose is not a strong defender, but he is at least playing defense every possession.

It was so beautiful to see actual rotations when Amir was in there in place of Bargs. It is beyond me why Triano took Amir out of the game. That said - there did seem to be some recognition from Bargnani that he needed to do something defensively. If he can continue to play well on offensive, and at least provide a modicum of effort on defense, so that the efforts of others are not so badly wasted, then I won't be quite so disgusted. But if I see how Bosh has to defend two guys while also keeping a constant eye on the perimeter, then I see no hope for this season.

I'm a barg supporter and have been since the day he came into the league. I thought he was freakestly talented and the sky's the limit for him. He absolutely frustrating and I bet a handful to coach.

Talent is dripping from this kid and I really hope one day the complete package will be shown. This year will be the first full year for him to start and maybe Triano, BC, Mauricio, players etc etc. can pound this into him that he must start recognizing he needs a full complement to be successful in the nba.

Just because I'm a Bargnani supporter doesn't me I don't Understand what type of game he has.

You're right DVS. Perhaps I should have said "Bargs fanboys" because I think that he's very talented too.

My comment was directed more towards the posters who seem to think that we should run all of our offense through Bargs and that he should be our franchise player rather than Bosh. Laughable.

There was no one happier than me when he manned up for those 2 games and rebounded the ball (and played D). The game vs. the Pistons in particular was great.

Maybe he just knew that I was there watching him in person and put on a brave face.
