Raptors Bargnani on the emphasis of defense

Quote:
Andrea Bargnani spent two months playing under Italian national team coach Simone Pianigiani, whose club team, Montespaschi Siena has been the class of Italy for the past half dozen years.

“Siena is known for its defensive play,” Bargnani said. “They have won the past six championships in Italy because of its defence.”

Bargnani has never played for new Raptors coach Dwayne Casey but he seems to know a season where defense is stressed awaits him and he says he’s fine with that.

“I think that’s great,” he said. “Our biggest problems in the past were with defense. We don’t have a problem scoring the basketball. It’s going to be a great thing for all of us.”

Gotta love a big man that embraces playing for a defensive dynasty! Glad he's not concerned or obsessed with chasing a max contract....

Good times ahead for the Raptors baby!

Lets see if he actually tries to play defense this year, rather than stand and watch. Will be interesting to see. At least it seems like he wants to try this year, but if he disappoints....

From another article:

Quote:
Bargnani was the first Raptor to take advantage of the availability of the practice court on the third floor of the Air Canada Centre. The league is allowing players to work there, as long as no head coaches or assistant coaches (or executives) work with the players.

Most of the other nine other Raptors under contract are expected to come into town on the weekend. New director of sports science Alex McKechnie was putting Bargnani through the paces on Friday, including a drill involving timed wind sprints, a nod to events that likely take place in the third circle of hell.

I lost a lot of respect for Bargnani last season, but we will see if he walks the talk.

I really hope this team learns to play D under Casey... I'm tired of seeing awful perimeter bench players going off on us.

Effort is 80% effortband mind set ... Will he change?
I hope so ... I've been a Bargs supporter, but as a rule, people only change after significant emotional life event.

It doesnt help how we never had an actual defensive minded coach either to help us with this even though its always brought up every year. Our main focus was to score tons of points

I have to agree here. Even last year, with all the talk of a renewed focus on defending, the end result wound up being a focus on gimmicks as a way to increase defensive intensity. Too much emphasis was on the zones and full-court pressure while the team actually needed to be more physical, aggressive.

Why do we need a coach to tell players to be more physical and aggressive? You can be that and play zone defense as well.

Those attributes a player either has or doesn't. It's not something you coach out of a player, it's something a person has. It's something they're willing to do. To date, I've never really seen Bargnani do this. Bargnani was at his best, early in his rookie year under Smitch who did emphasize defense from his players and when he wasn't producing and became a liability, limited or benched those players.

so maybe if BC hired someone to kidnap his mother!? Draw it out for a while, make him really panic and then when she comes home nice and safe he will take a look at himself and say "i'm gonna start REALLY trying on D now."

i don't agree with you there. Teams can have a culture where even a previosuly "lazy" player will fall in line with the new coach or when they're on a new team. Most players will fall in line and "get with the program," if almost every player is doing it.

I think it would be better to hire someone to go back in time & steal his mojo.

I definitely hope derozan's apathy on D is fixable. Some of you are starting to scare me that it's not!
