Bargnani blames struggles on fatigue

Quote:

“I’m still not 100%,” Bargnani told the media on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s game against Detroit.

“Everybody is a little fatigued right now, but we’re still in training camp and we’re going to be all right for the (regular season opener against Indiana on Halloween).

Bargnani has hit only nine of 27 shots over the first two games (33.3%) and is 2-for-8 from three-point range.

Last season, the seven-footer dipped to just 29.6% accuracy from behind the line, continuing a downward trend from his career-best 40.9% in 2008-09 and 37.2% last year.

Bargnani is not getting as much lift or arc on his shots, which points to the fitness issue he raised.

His worst shooting last season came after he had missed time with a calf injury and was battling to find his conditioning. He is rarely concerned though about his game and certainly isn’t losing any sleep about his ailing jumper.

“I’ve never been worried about my jump shot since I’m six years old I don’t care if it goes in, goes out, I’m still shooting, still (have) a great shot,” Bargnani said.

“I don’t even think about my shot actually, I just think about defence, try to get rebounds. My shot? I just shoot.”

could be this new weight he's added. playing heavier might not be the best thing for him.

Admiral 10-13-2012 10:34 AM

he's just not in game shape yet, he took the summer off and didn't play any real organized ball
also, its preseason and the team isn't playing the same type of offense where he was constantly getting fed the ball

no-one is :)...i would imagine the "rehab" area is filled to capacity before and after practices/games right now

Andrea is playing mind games. He is holding back so that he will shock everyone in the regular season... Strategic thinking Bargs!

One thing that bothered me was when he stated a couple days ago that he doesn't worry about or work on his shot. So in other words the one thing he's relied upon for he essentially neglects. Might explain why his 3PT% have gone down each season since the 08-09 season.

moremilk 10-13-2012 11:23 AM

Actually, I thought he looked very good last night, very active and engaged, stats notwithstanding. However, he does look a little too big and I'm still not convinced that's such a good thing for him.

Or maybe it's because after bosh and Turk left, he was the only guy worth defending on our team. With Lowry, I'm convinced his percentages will climb back.

Not worried about his offense ... he needs to build on the better effort and defense he showed last night.
He will always be a strong offensive player and he will be streaky at times ... like all shooters.
Continued effort and tenacity on the court ... glad to hear what he is saying ... he just needs to continue to focus on this.

bjjs 10-13-2012 11:27 AM

If Bargnani plays like he did last night in the second half - he'll be ready for Halloween. If he keeps playing like he did the first two games - hopefully he's sitting on the bench.

Your logic is flawed.... if he hasn't worried about his shot since 6, why didn't it affect his best season? It's not like he was 6 before that season.

Maybe because as time goes on some talents erode if you don't work on them. Is this the case with Bargnani, who knows probably not and I never said it was the case either. Just saying, the one thing he's best at he doesn't work on kinda bothers me.

I also feel like bargs isn't really trying as hard, at least offensively. How awesome would it be to have two breakout all stars in AB and KL

You're really reaching here Jeff. He never said he doesn't work on his shot - he said he doesn't worry about it. Heck, he even said in training camp that he worked a lot on his shot this summer. The fact that he knows it will come with time is a testament to his experience with his own game, not an indictment of his practice habits.

saying he doesn't worry about his jumper doesn't mean that he doesn't take shooting practice..... he was giving a brutal answer to a ridiculous question... is he worried about his shot not falling through two preseason games? Seriously, is that reallly a worthwhile question for anyone to ask? Go back to hockey, it's an 82 game schedule and we're weeks away from meaningful games.

I hate the obsessive media coverage over inconsequential details. Why don't they ask if the new uniforms chaffe more than the old ones. I'd wanna see spme credentials before I answered any of these annoying questions.

Aamir 10-13-2012 02:35 PM

I seem to remember every single home opener for the past few years Bargs having a huge game.

Have to second that one, it is a reach.

To me, Bargs' comment is nothing more than a confidant statement of a shooter - a similar statement everyone here has heard before from every good shooter in the league that goes through a dry spell.

I also agree wholeheartedly with moremilk, with Lowry and the other players the Raps have I expect his % to go back up as the defense gets spread apart and he has less doubles.

Beside Jay Cutler, Bargs might be the most apathetic LOOKING player in pro sports. It makes it so east to think he doesn't work or care.
