There's also a chance the raps could trade the 5th + 2 2nds for the 3rd + some player, etc etc
gives more options going forward.

Quick hits on the Raptors move to send Leandro Barbosa to the Pacers for a second-round pick and cash.

- I’ve seen fans online questioning the haul (to put it mildly), but here’s what armchair GM’s need to consider:

a) The value of first-round picks in what’s believed to be a very strong draft, seems very high. Look at the salary the Cavs had to take on just to get a low first-round pick to confirm that.

b) Barbosa, who’s an expiring deal, could be nothing more than a playoff run-rental for the Pacers. If the Pacers gave up their first-rounder in this year’s draft for a reserve player that may be there for only a month or two it should be Pacers fans going ballistic.

c) You (or I) aren’t privy to know whether or not Barbosa was willing to re-sign with the Raptors or even if he wanted to move on to a playoff team. If he wasn’t, would fans be as upset knowing the Raptors got something for nothing?

- Debate the haul, but you can’t argue with the Raptors’ motivation behind this deal. With the Pacers under the salary cap, they absorb the entirety of Barbosa’s deal, which maintains the salary cap flexibility Bryan Colangelo has long coveted heading into this summer. The second-round pick, currently projected to be in the low-50′s, is gravy and a small asset for Colangelo to use in June.

- This deal also opens things up for Jerryd Bayless, who’s performed admirably as a fill-in at starting PG for the injured Jose Calderon, but has long seemed better suited to the role that Barbosa occupied. With the future of Bayless in the air after this season, he now gets a long look with steady minutes before the offseason. Gary Forbes, could also be the beneficiary of more minutes.

- This is very much a deal for the future, but questions now remain for the remainder of season. With 13 players on the roster, the Raptors now have two roster spots available and a wafer thin backcourt. Do they take a flier on anyone?

I think the real winner is Forbes. He has practically warmed the bench for the entire season. Otherwise, he's playing his unnatural PG position. Casey/Colangelo have him on a multi-year contract; they might as well see what he can contribute.

Either that or we're bringing back Sonny.

Would have thought we can get more for Leandro than salary dump and worthless pick
After all his salary would be clear anyway this summer, but we would have an option to resign a useful player and a great teammate.
Not with BC on this one, can't make moves just to seem active.

Tough market. BC had to send a first rounder to get someone like James Johnson while barbosa goes for a late (maybe 50-60 range) second rounder.

BC better have a good explanation, this is a terrible trade.
how about going one step further, we traded charlie v for a 2nd round pick,

well i would take that trade any day of the week, good 6 year trade bc

its all about money

let barbosa out our books...since we are not playoff bound anyway, save the money and get cash consideration...

these helps some guys get more exposure (bayless and forbes)...hopefully they will improve specially bayless

give us more chance to get high pick on next years draft...draft pick will be a lot cheaper...

Colangelo still has the same opportunity to resign Barbosa that he would have had if the trade didn't go down. We lost nothing in this trade but Barbosa's services for the rest of the season, and gained almost 8 million in cap flexibility between now and July 1st, plus that almost-worthless pick.

i just don't see the value in the "added flexibility" of the 8 million before july 1. free agenncy doesnt even start till july 1st, and players about to hit free agency can no longer be traded.

so at best, we might possibly get a jump on a team lookng to make a free agency splash by making a trade to shed them 7.6 million dollars.

This move has "help another team land a marquee free agent" written all over it.

1. TPE is available for a year. In other words, extra 8 mil until next season's trade deadline.

2. As Dan and others pointed out, this was a no-loss move. Not necessarily a winning one (although losing extra games this season without Barbosa is a win in my books), but definitely at the very least a no-loss move. Graded A for the Raps by the observers.

so we gain:

1. improve our chances at the #1 pick this summer
2. save about $3 million in salaries
3. increase the PT for bayless and forbes
4. get a free 2nd round pick
5. get a TPE

and we lose:

1. the bird rights to barbosa

and you don't like the move???

So we should have just let ford and netrovic expire and have ... nothing? Or JO? Or is the concept of trading players in the last year of their contract the thing some don't like... oh... wait....what?

You just can't look at it this way ... seriously .

counter pont:

1: we are currently the 4th worst record-maybe washington wins 5 more games then us in the lst 20 games to finsish with a better record. NOH isnt winning more than us nor is Charlotte.
so the difference isnt minimal. about a 2% better chance at the number 1 pick(and keep in mind that NOH is owned by nba and just lost their star player) best part is the lowest we could fall at pick 3 is to 6th instead of 7th.

2) move saved more like 2 million in salary owed to barbosa i guess....big deal.

3) Bayless already had an increase in playing time, Forbes-who care

4) getting a late second rounder is like saying mcdonalds gave me ketchup with my bigmac combo-big deal

5) get a tpe that will need to be renounced in order to have maximum capspace.( to my understanding at least) so at best it will alow us to take back a contract worth up to 7.6 million dollars. so maybe a team looking to get under lux tax will send some junk. Or the biggest maybe of all, team trades pick and tpe for a real player.

Only thing that could be slightly exciting about it all is the possiblity of trading the pick and tpe at draft time for a proven guy(boston with ray allen)
