Barbosa’s brother says Brazil return is an option

Quote:

There is big money in Brazil right now,” said Artur, a former military negotiator at the country’s army and Leandro’s personal trainer for many years. “There are a lot sponsorships opportunities and money is flowing there, so I have to open (Leandro’s) eyes to these opportunities. We love Toronto and the fans and he would love to stay there, but business is business and Brazil is an option we would have to consider.
Quote:

“Right now, we are waiting for proposals from Brazil and we would make a decision after that,” Artur said. “He could stay in Toronto, he could go to Flamengo during the lockout and then return for the rest of the season or he could sign a long contract in Brazil.”
Quote:

If Leandro goes there, he will be a player that makes money like a (soccer) player because he comes from the NBA and a lot of sponsors want the association with his name because he is a celebrity in Brazil.”

Lol... everyone is just resigned to a lockout. The NBA season is doomed!

I would love to see him in Europe. Brazil basketball is weak, mediocre Euro level player Marcelo Machado is unstoppable there.

If he goes, we should go after Jamal Crawford.

Naw he'll cost way too much to be worth it I think.

34Mil commited to 9 players if Barbosa leaves? That's decent capspace.

Quote:

According to the Globe and Mail's Michael Grange, Brazilian veteran Leandro Barbosais considering opting out of the final year of a contract scheduled to pay him $7.6-million for 2011-12.

Should Barbosa leave his option and return to Brazil it could open up the rebuilding Raptors’ options considerably, both by providing another roster spot and shaving more money off the Raptors salary obligations, already slated to drop from $69-million on the books last season to about $34-million for nine players – though that number will rise as the team adds a draft pick and fills out its roster.

he's a good player but he's not in our championship future, if he wants to leave i won't cry, its just more cap space for us to rebuild with

I would much prefer that Barbosa decline his option for next year. He is definitely not worth $7.5 million; we could easily get a volume scorer/offensive spark off the bench for MLE-type money.

I'd rather have the space.

I would have preferred him going in a trade with another team. I doubt the Raptors can attract a lot of free agents even with the money. Seems that all the stars would want to follow the Miami Big 3 model.

looks like another year with a lot of turnaround in the roster, so much for stability in the roster

It should be expected after 22-60. In fact I want like half of the roster gone.

i do too, actually i want like 3/4 of the roster gone, but there hasn't been a year since BC became the GM that our roster has seen any stability

Maybe the second year when he just acquired Delfino and Kapono in the off-season. But yeah, otherwise the roster was overhauled about 3 times now.

DocHoliday99 06-11-2011 01:55 AM

Who cares. Let him leave. He was part of a trade for salary purposes and not of any rebuilding. Barbo leaving just gives the Raps more flexibility. Most likely he'll leave and sign with Miami and try for a championship. He'd be deadly there and they need him.

Nah, if he leaves then they should go after Marc Gasol and offer him $11-12 mil a year.
