Exclamation Banks Hopes To Contribute

Quote:
Ultimate tweener aims to contribute
By FRANK ZICARELLI, SUN MEDIA

Last Updated: 29th September 2009, 3:21am

The future of Marcus Banks as a Raptor is as clouded as his role on the team.

Banks admits he can get moved, but insists he's paying no attention to the gossip.

"If it's in the best interest of the Raptors organization to make a move, then that's what they've got to do,'' Banks said yesterday on media day.

"I'm not going to worry because it's out of my control. All I worry about is helping this team."

But how and in what capacity?

Banks might be the ultimate tweener, a guy who doesn't quite have the necessary handles nor the decision-making to play the point and neither does he have the consistent jumper to play shooting guard.

He's tough as nails and can defend smaller guards, but the 6-foot-2 Banks barely has played in the past three seasons.

He ended last season on the injured list following foot surgery.

"I'm completely healthy now and I'm ready to go,'' Banks said.

He can contribute by getting traded.

The better way to contribute is to accept a buyout for $0.

He's a good defender and I'd like to see him used in situations when we need a defensive minded line up out there.

You guys kill me.

You ALL love Douby but hate this guy. why? Contract? Get over it, it is what it is. What if he defends better than Douby, or can get to the line a little???

Still hate him?

His contract has zero to do with his place on the team, it's there, and it ain't going away.

Evans said he was very, VERY quick.

I dont see it happening.
he can say he wants to contribute, but talk is cheap.
i'd like to see (or hear) that he is busting his ass in practice and in pre-season; trying to crack the rotation. However, i think its asking too much.
The guy refused to go to summer camp... its one thing to say you want to contribute, and its another thing to actually go out and earn your right to do so.

he's a lost cause.

Was it his option?

Dudes in the league 6 years, and honestly, that league is there for new players to learn the "NBA game".

Using that against him might not be fair. If he busted ass and worked out all summer and is ready to be a 5 million dollar positive, that awesome.

Refusing to get value is stupidity.

You can stick up for the guy all you want with hypotheticals...Fact is, guy hasn't done shit for a while now. Sure people hate the contract but there are plenty of bad contracts. The annoying part is when you are paying for NOTHING.

If he does do something, then people will stop getting on his back... But they have every right to call him shit and get angry that he is passing up the opportunities of "learning the NBA game".

If he already knew how to play it maybe his quality of play wouldn't be as bad as it is!

Most guys don't play 6 years in because they need the rest more than the practice!

Come on man, you know why people are loving Douby because at least he appears to be dedicated to getting better. Until now, there has been nothing close to positive coverage on Banks...Blame the media if you want... But the guys image is in the toilet.

It's up to him to fix that... It's not up to us to love him just because he might be better than another scrub in Douby!

talk is cheap SJ.

he talks big, yet he refuses to go to summer league and practise, and get better, and make a name for himself, and even show he's got game.
instead he'll just do his own thing over the summer and the raps will just hand him Playing time?
not a chance in hell.
if he had any desire whatsoever to be a contributing factor for this team, he would swallow his pride (first and foremost), and go the summer league route and show that he means business.
he can say all he wants about wanting to contribute, but if he isnt willing to jump through some hoops and show his team that he cares and wants to improve then he's full of shit. he's pretty much saying "i want to contribute this year, so give me some playing time... i dont deserve it, but i still want to contribute."

he's the last possible player on the end of our bench, and you actually approve of him refusing to go to summer league?
funny thing is, if his contract wasnt guaranteed, i bet he would have been the first player there.... and that, my friend is why he's full of shit.

Well, while I respect your emotional attachement to the team, I certainly am not moved at all by the last two posts.

If he does do something, then people will stop getting on his back... But they have every right to call him shit and get angry that he is passing up the opportunities of "learning the NBA game".

1. Dude was tossed in a filler, and was never considered anything more than a 13th guy.
2. Summer league isn't where anyone showcases thier game. Sorry to be the one to give you the news. Although rules could possibly have changed to allow teams room to look at UFA's from europe or other places, traditionally the leage was reserved for players with 3 years and under in the league as a tool to let them learn the NBA game. Ahem, yes, thats what I said, "learn the game". Sinc eyou clearly missed the point I'll explain. In the NBA, there are a plethora of rules and senario's that differ than in FIFA or in the NCAA. Teams want a bit of a wading pool for thier young players so they can give them that basic education and not take away from VALUABLE time in training camp.

Did you guys train with this Banks guy all summer? Did you run with him? Where was he working out? Are pick up games with other NBA guys better or worse than the fucking Summe rleague, which, outside of teaching kids the NBA ropes, are nothing more than ATROCIOUS basketball games. But ya, thats Where Marcus banks SHOULD BE.

Give it a rest, you are commenting and acting on emotion. Unguided at that.

Banks didn't ask to be traded to Toronto, and once he was here he got hurt. Wa she hurt or scratched???? No matter. Poinmt is he didn't play so NONE of you really have any gounds to tear him up since he's been a Raptor. On top of that, IF, and thats a big IF, he worked out hard and can actually contribute, then he will be allowed to do just that. If he cannot, he will not, but not going to the fucking Summer league has ZERO to do with it.

Thats the problem with dealing with the Stat and pony show..... ya'll don't think shit through!

SJ, everyone knows summer league is a non factor when alls said and done... but if you have pretty much zero prospects and an even less chance of playing when the seaosn starts, dont you think it may benefit you to go there and show that you have game?

Do you think Douby had a chance when summer started? he pretty much had to play in summer league to survive and get a contract... he showed that he's got potential, he showed that he can actually ball - if given the chance - and guess what? i guarantee that summer league made a HUGE difference for this guy when the real season rolls around.

you think for one second that Banks will get called into a game before Douby? not a chance in hell.
Triano recognizes Douby's heart and his passion to play at all costs and i guarantee you that this season we'll be seeing Douby a hell of a lot more than we see Banks.
why? is Douby better? probably not... but at least when he says he is going to contribute, he backs it up.

Anyone hear about what Banks did over the summer?
nope.... thats surprising

you're right...not going to summer league has zero to do with it.... but REFUSING to go has EVERYTHING to do with it.
how can you possibly respect a player who says no to his coaches when they ask him to do something to improve himself and show what he can do?

Listen.

If Banks is a better fit for a situation in a game, he'll get the nod.

This is just business.

As for his refusal. I'm looking tfor it, but I can't find it. If he was asked specifically by Management to go, then I will step back from that part, because I don't agree with that shit. But thats it. Iverson and the "practice" tirade explains it all. If you have a guy, and he can play, he's gonna play.

Nothing I am saying is meant to insult, I apologise if it come soff that way, I'm just trying to get a bitter point across that nothing matters once the games start except for who is best fit to play. That, and contractual considerations. I.e. Douby was at SL because he falls into the category of UFA's that need to be there to justify thier existance. Banks has years, guarenteed.

If Banks is rwady to go, and in shape, and playing well, do you seriously think he sits and Douby plays out of vindictive thinking.... hell no, you cash in on the floor. Who you think is harder to move?????? douby and his min contract?? Or Banks. Damn right Banks plays.

Here's the kicker. If he plays in a tight game and forces some dude like Ray Allen into a few forced jumpoers and helps win a close game...... will you really give a shit that Douby tried hard in July?

There's a reason why Banks got a fat contract - he plays tough D - which was his rep coming out of UNLV and had the potential to be a solid if unspectacular PG. I mean, he's not going to see a lot of action as it is anyways, but if he's injury free, I'd like to see what he can do. He's been injured since he got that contract.

The Raptors haven’t finalized their summer league roster yet – I know they expect DeRozan, Jawai, Ukic, Douby and O’Bryant there from list of returning players – but I will tell you this:

They want Marcus Banks to play and the last time I spoke to anyone with power in the organization, the request was being greeted with resistance.

I imagine Banks, with six years in the league, might think he’s above playing in the summer league, which is absolutely the wrong thing to think.

Here’s a kid who’s played about 1,200 regular season minutes over the last three years (my abacus says that’s the equivalent of about 25 48-minute games) and a kid who needs to show a little bit of what he can do, even under messy summer league conditions.

Not only that, if Banks wants to have a chance to earn some time with the Raptors – or even show 29 other GMs that he’s got some game – it’s imperative he plays.

Stay tuned on this one, because if he ultimately bails, I can’t imagine it’s going to make his bosses happy.
Doug Smith's Toronto Raptors blog

I read about this a couple of times. Apparently he resides in Vegas as well, so he was already there.
