Back up PG?

Brian Colangelo was on the Fan yesterday and once again said they need to go get a back up PG. Now from what i see, we have Ukic/Banks and if AP stays we have him. So this to me means that Banks is as good as gone probably through a buy out which saves us i believe 2.8Mil. And if AP stays it'll be as a SG off the bench. So if BC is determined to go and get a back up PG to play minutes behind Jose, obviously Ukic isn't ready. What are our options. Who can we get? Is there gonna be any good combo guards available at #9 (assuming we stay at that position).

Don't forget Douby - I'd say he's ahead of Marcus Banks in the depth chart.

i think we should draft the best player avilable at 9 (derozan?, clark? evans? thats a subjective opinion) and then i think we should try to buy a 12-15 pick with the $3 million we got from the miami deal, and maybe throw in a second rounder if needed (prefer not to) we basically get back a first rounder from the miami trade then and there should be some good point guards available, some will probably be gone from this list but we could potentially pick up teague, holiday, flynn, or lawson

on the other hand i also wouldn't really mind trading up a couple spots to get jennings either, but i think we'd be good with either of the four mentioned up top

lets just hope some teams need some money and that there is a good point guard left for us in the middle of the first round

i also haven't given up on roko but i think we should maybe send him to the d league if we are able to pick up a second first rounder and a point guard, parker and Calderon play the majority and hopefully the point guard we draft will be able to be the back up right away and that will give parker even less work which might also extend his career, cause him to play better d, and have better point production, roko probably goes back to europe though as he can make some good money, we still probably hold his nba rights then and if he ever develops into the player we think we can then we bring him back or trade him

He said possibly, but going into the season they'll need someone else because it doesn't appear Roko is ready.

Why should we buy out Banks? Unless he's a cancer( which he isn't) then keeping him one more year till he becomes a valuable trading chip as an expiring contract makes more sense. There's zero chance he gives up almost 3 mil in guaranteed dollars when he probably won't get a contract anywhere else in the league.

Valuable trading chip? Hahhhhhhhhhhh

Nobody would want his contract going into the 2010-11 season.

I agree especially if we can get a SG with our first pick and then buy a mid-late 1st rounder where we can then look at getting a PG.

all right then, at the february trading deadline. Worse players have been traded because of their expiring contracts.

Tell me, what does the team gain from buying him out? A roster spot so they can sign another scrub who'll never see the floor? They're certainly not going to get more than 500K in relief off of his contract buyout.

Almost 3Mil more to spend. Which could be given to Delfino or AP(If he stays) therefore you don't dip into what little money who have to spend to sign one of your own player(s). In other words use that money to re-sign Delfino or AP or even to bring back Rasho without using the cap space you currently have.

turning banks into ap or delfino would be golden
potentially couldn't we turn banks into ap and kapono into delfino? and still have all that money to spend and mle, we then used some crappy players on bench and turn our bench into a pretty solid one especially if we get rasho, we certainly need to get rid of a big man or 2 though

I'm still hoping for collison.
That is the type of glue-type D that the Raptors need at the backup PG

But where are you getting this number from jeff? Am i missing some sort sort article where this number was brought up? To sign delfino or AP, that would have to be 3 million dollars annually. That means he'd be giving up 6 million dollars from his remaining 9 million( or something to that effect), which is unheard of.

When you buy out a player, the buyout amount is divided over the number of years remaining on the guys contract and still counts against the cap. You get almost no cap relief when a player like banks is bought out.

or in other words is there a way to simply get rid of a guy you don't want other than trade

I was told that the Buyout would be around 1.5MIL per which saves us close to 3Mil) for the remaining years of the contract.

Interesting, didn't know that. That's around 33 % of his contract which is pretty generous as far as buyouts go, especially for a scrub like Banks.

Either way though. One of UKic/Banks/Douby has to go if BC wants to bring in a legit back up or draft a back up PG. You can't have 4 back up PG's behind Jose, add to that Delfino and perhaps AP who can also fill in at PG. I'm guessing possibly Banks going somehow and AP not coming back.
