available centres?

people talk a lot about needing to pick up a centre. i thought it might be a good idea to explore possibilities.

here are all of the free agent centres. i bolded 5 of them that might be difference makers for us if we could get them. problem is that i don't think any of their current teams will want to give them up. at best we're significantly overpaying. did i miss anyone?:

below is a list of every centre in the nba. are there difference makers in this list that we can realistically get in a trade? given that we probably aren't offering davis or derozan, i can't really find any guys under contract that i would want and that i think we could get for some combination of bargs, calderon, bayless, amir, etc.

haywood? kaman? darko? thompson? gortat? mcgee? this isn't looking too good.

can someone point out some possibilities that might help us fill this position? does any of this make us more likely to go after a big in the draft? i'm having trouble imagining how we're going to have the solid defensive-minded centre we all want without another team simply not deciding to bring back one of the 5 free agent guys i bolded above. this doesn't seem likely. ideas?

Not even near worth a risk

I say try to swing Bargs for Robin Lopez and another player. Gortat is solidifying the C spot and Bargs in that offence would look great beside Gortat, or they can go with a Bargs and Frye front court since they love them trey balls. :cookie:

Yao has broken his feet something like 4 times already. Not worth the risk.

Aaron Gray would be a nice pickup for cheap. After being stuck behind Okafor I imagine he'd kill for a starting job. I was watching the Hornets/Lakers game and the announcers were complimenting Gray saying he loves to get physical and he defends big strong C's like Bynum pretty well because of his size and strength. He doesn't get backed down a lot. Kind of sounds like Joel Pryzbilla. He also has decent shooting range. They said maybe the only flaw with him is his conditioning.

I agree, he would be a very nice pick up.

We should ask Jose to recruit Marc Gasol for us before we trade him :dancing:

I'd like to see D'Andre Jordan but I don't know why he'd come here if he was going to leave LA

Bankiz 04-18-2011 06:27 AM

1. can we trade marc gasol for bargs ?
if so do it in a heart beat !

2. interest for :
a. as vet who can teach our bigs and bring some experience in frontcourt :
Dalembert, thomas

b. young who can pair with davis :
jordan, oden, gray

RAPMAN 04-18-2011 07:42 AM

I love the Ibaka kid from OKC. They have Perkins there already. That kid goes after it and has a great attitude.

halphbreedballer 04-18-2011 08:23 AM

There is no possible way were getting Jordan...

I'd take him before Oden. Not that I want either of them.

LX 04-18-2011 10:39 AM

I'd be tempted to give Kurt Thomas a year if he's available. They don't need to hit a home run right now. I don't want to see money thrown at a defensive-minded C for the wrong reasons, meaning as a band-aid for the overall defensive woes and/or as a means to making things work with Bargnani. Just improve the overall defense and look for our bigs to get a little stronger.

Nabbing another draft pick would be nice.

Do you think we can somehow grab another high pick? With this draft I think it might be possible. Wasn't there a story a few months ago where Kahn said they were done rebuilding and had enough youth? I also think GSW are in that same kind of position.

DuCa00795 04-18-2011 11:14 AM

I really like this topic, but I think it comes down to what our plan is...Do we keep Bargs and shift him to the PF? That means that Amir and Davis would lose some playing time and Evan will most likely be let go. Do we get rid of Bargnani for a guard and lock up a center? If that's the case we'll have to hope Davis becomes more of an offensive threat in the post.

I do like Marc Gasol though, the guy has some offensive game and he's a hustler. I think he would fit we'll because he has a post game, and if he played alongside Andrea he would get a lot of isolations in the post because Bargnani would be spreading the defense. To this guy, a basketball is like holding a tennis ball haha. It would be nice to keep Bargnani and pair him up with a true center and see how things work out. Only time will tell though.

Snooch 04-18-2011 12:17 PM

thought that Gasol and Deandre were both Restricted free agents......

Funny how everyone likes Sammy again, whenever he was mentioned last season he was continuously called a cancer on this site.

LX 04-18-2011 12:23 PM

I don't see any mention of liking Sammy anywhere. And that qualifies as everyone liking him?

EggsToTheBBQ 04-18-2011 01:05 PM

I think we should draft Valanciunas and be prepared to develop him for a year or two.

If you really want a quality center that seems to be the way to do it (historically).

Other than that, we could possibly trade for someone like Omer Asik or Aaron Gray - guys that aren't the first options for their teams. Long term I don't think either of them have the upside of Valanciunas.

Gasol and DeAndre Jordan are possibilities worth exploring, but I don't see why their teams wouldn't re-sign them at this point. I'd much rather have Valanciunas on a rookie contract than over paying for those guys.

The center position is the hardest one to fill, and it's usually done through the draft.

If we do select Valanciunas, then, depending on where we're drafting from, it might be possible to trade down and select him with a later pick, getting significant assets in return, or unloading a contract.

MARTYNAS 04-18-2011 02:19 PM

Oh man, you really said it loud. Draft raw Euro center/project. Brave stuff...
Saw ''Rytas'' bus yesterday, they were practicing here, Hope to hunt him, i believe he knows me pretty well... We will see he loves the idea to play in TOR or not... But i guarantee he is staying in Europe for a year so you know...

Gray actually has a player option for next year. I'm sure he'd decline it so he can go elsewhere where he has a great chance to start. Sign Gray and draft Valanciunas and you can start Davis at PF. We'd have a really deep young PF/C group incl. A. Johnson.

Bill Haverchuck 04-18-2011 03:24 PM

I wonder if Nene is even in the picture. Is he starting that church or what? I hope he signs a multi year deal with a team. He was awesome last night. It would be a shame if he picked up that player option and then retired afterwards, as was speculated last year.

As for the Raptors, Gasol is at the top of the list and I increasingly doubt it will happen. Heisley used to be such a cheap MOFO, and now he seems willing to spend. First Rudy got a huge extension, then Randolph...he'll probably lock up Gasol now. :tombstone:
