Atlanta Raptors

Serious question.

It is usually stud players who close out games, get calls, make their teamates better and in most cases, just win.

We can't even agree on the worth of a guy like Deron Williams.

So if this rebuild just has us peaking as a 2nd tier contender like the Atlanta Hawks, is that good enough for Raps fans? 4th to 8th seed for 6 years and then back to the drawing board? That's respectable, but is that what folks are looking for?

I'm pretty sure most of us are looking to Jonas & AB to lead us close to if not a championship.

At this point 4th-8th seed for 6 years would be a success of epic proportions.

We actually agree! :cookie:

Yup. And those players don't grow on trees. The Raps' organization has existed for fewer than 20 years and they've already had 2 studs, Carter and T-Mac, and and top level 2nd option in Bosh.

Statistically, we've had our chance. It just got fucked up by the players chosing to leave.

You could make a good case that we had the talent in place to get to the finals 2 or 3 times. We never fully saw what Carter, Tmac and Davis could do together. And we never fully saw what Carter and an experienced Bosh could do together.

What the fuck ya' gonna do? That's life. It would almost be too greedy to expect to have that degree of talent fall into our laps again so frequently.

Seriously. With 30 teams in the league, you can't expect to get a championship level 1-2 punch every 5-6 years.

That's irrelevant to reality, because he wouldn't come here.

The thing is, Atlanta could have been better than they are/were. There was potential for them to be even better, had they done a couple of moves differently. There were a lot of "what ifs".

I like what Indiana is doing. Philly is also putting together some decent pieces. Those teams are one move, or some good internal growth, away from being good teams. They don't have elite studs, although they have an all-star.

I'd be thrilled if we could get to where Indiana and Philly are at...and potentially going.

Admiral 03-22-2012 07:59 AM

let's be realistic here, unless you have a true franchise player who's 1 of the best players in the entire league you're probably not going to be a true contender for the championship, and in this current age of the nba you probably need that and the nba to give you another 2 allstar to superstar players for you to truly contend
if you think about it that way, there's really only a handful of teams that are actually truly contenders making that probably the top 3 seeds in each conference, so being like a 4th or 5th seed isn't too bad compared to the rest of the league

mrRabbit 03-22-2012 08:08 AM

That's why the Pistons was such a good championship team!!! Teamwork won rather than one man domination... But statistically, you need a leader and closer.... Pre-injury Andrea had potential, so hope to see it next season... Too bad MKG might not be in the draft -_-...

RAPMAN 03-22-2012 09:15 AM

I am hoping we hit No. 1 with Anthony Davis. Take out Bargnani as our power forward for the future. With Davis and Jonas guarding the basket with Casey as coach, we'll have a great defense. Experts are saying Davis is the only franchise player.

I still need to see more of him, but AD is definitely number 1 option in the draft. Doubt we will get him, but we can always dream

carp 03-22-2012 09:31 AM

I'm hoping we land the #1 pick and trade it for a boatload! So much hype on Davis, he's sure to bust if we keep him!

And if we would trade him he would become best PF in the league :sigh:

LOG 03-22-2012 09:57 AM

I have to disagree with you carp, i would love to land AD and keep him! Someone who became #1 draft prospect by being dominant defender and efficient offensive player can't be all that bad.

With all this hype, just think of the talent you could get in a trade for him

Examples? I would like to know what would be looking at, someone like Durant or someone like Scalabrine :evillaugh:

obviously neither of those guys. I think we'd be looking at somebody who isn't in the top 5 in the league.

Atlanta is still a very good team, 27-20 with their starting center (all-star) out the entire season. They're getting better every year, and they've put in their dues in the playoffs. I think I would take them over Phili or Indy in a 7 game series.

4th-8th for 6 years is fan-fuckingtastic. That's 6 years where with a little magic, some preferrable matchups, and a couple hot shooters, you have a chance at the championship.

The Mavericks look like gods after they win the championship but most had them losing to the Blazers in the first round.

Absolutely agree.... This team needs to earn respect before we can ever hope to get that little extra magic

MikeToronto 03-22-2012 11:55 AM

I am going to be in a minority here, but I wouldn't be happy with the Toronto Hawks. Or, rather, I would be for a season or two. :sigh:

Acie 03-22-2012 12:17 PM

Surely there is no way we'd draft a Marvin Harrison type of player over a Chris Paul or Deron Williams type of player, is there?

He was so fast in his prime!
