Arrow Assessing the Jose Calderon situation

Quote:
I think he's a starting point guard in the league. With the right players around him, his defensive lapses can be mitigated and he provides enough offensive value to overlook his slow feet. Only problem: nobody wants to take on salary right now.

I'm not sure what Colangelo's plan is for the trade deadline but I do hope he has one because the Raptors, unless they defy playoff folklore and explode for 115-120 points/game, are not ready to win a playoff series.

Calderon's departure would have little impact on the court this year. If anything, it frees up Hedo Turkoglu to take a more active role as the primary ball-handler/playmaker (something he has griped about this year) in specific situations, which could actually improve the team, creating more mismatches and slow herky-jerky pick-and-rolls that defenders are not accustomed to seeing.

Off the court: huge. If the team can exchange Calderon for expiring contracts this year (a move I would be fine with), the Raptors increase their cap space to about $15 million this offseason and much more in the following offseason with Reggie Evans and Marcus Banks (finally) expiring.

After (potentially) re-signing Bosh and accounting for the luxury tax threshold going down, it leaves the team a bit of space to tinker with the roster.

Expiring contracts for Calderon is wishful thinking but I think it's fair value when considering the back-up role that Calderon has been relegated to since his return from injury. Expiring contracts are a non-committal return that won't hinder the team's chances at winning a playoff round this year while relieving them of cap duties in the years ahead. It's ideal, which is exactly why it won't happen.

Biggest problem: who really wants Jose Calderon?

I was just saying to myself yesterday that i really hope we don't trade him.

Sometimes i get attached to a player and it really pains me to have them traded. Jerome Williams was one of those guys. I remember being really down about him leaving to Chicago - even though the trade was a good one for Toronto and benefitted the Raptors a good deal, i hated to see him go.

Ya - i would hate to see him go to another team. He's a raptor.

He's a fan favourite, so it would be tough.

He's also an awesome backup pg.

yep.

which is why there is absolutely no reason to trade the guy.

He's only going if they are getting a hell of a deal

I think keeping him in his current role works pretty well. But then that might mean that Hedo becomes expendable. The team needs to be tweaked one way or another. If Colangelo can do so while making it seem like a tweak and not something that needs to be re-adjusted to, then he's pretty fucking good. I imagine we manage with what is here, more or less, for now.

All my friends who are pretty big Raptor fans, but aren't self-proclaimed basketball experts, absolutely adore Jose.

Hedo has been expendable since day 1, and will be regardless of how well he plays. Their is no reason why Bargnani and Bosh shouldn't be the go to guys ahead of Hedo at the end of games, they have the skills to be better facilitators than Hedo, and their is no reason we couldn't use a hard nosed defender at the three spot who would embrace the role as a spot up three point shooter.

Back to Jose, i also just think he gives the team a great sense of balance. I mean we are equally dangerous at any given minute of the match. That's a luxury that few teams have.

I agree. Yet you have both him and Jose in somewhat awkward roles, and both of those guys make it harder for each of them to be better fits. All things considered it still works, but the team as a whole could get that much better if the right player were plugged in to one of those spots in their place.

Hedo gives them a swagger for lack of a better term. Also, the relationships he's developed in the league as an important player help us on a lot of calls (see: Lakers game).

This team does need a tweak, but damn if I know what player would help them out there.

im starting to get sick of this jose talk...ppl speak of him as he's the reason why we've been winning games. Its a collective team effort. What he does on one side of the floor shouldn't overshadow his weakness. Unfortunately, his weakness is the teams weakness, and it must be dealt with. The raps have to move forward and break through the chains of mediocrity and inconsistency. Whatever makes the team better now and for the future is the real objective, none of what happens in the upcoming days should happen soley to appease Bosh.

I appreciate what Jose has done, and wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up. (I'm going to feel so retarded if jose isn't traded)
Let us reminisce...

How could these super talented young 20s 7-footers who can shoot threes and bust people down off the dribble, ever become half the facilitator Hedo is.

I apologize, I must be crazy.

Maybe you're crazy, I don't know, but you are biased.

Sure they're both supertalented but they're not facilitators. Make a few passes out of a double team doesn't make one a playmaker.

How many passes made out of a double team that lead to baskets does someone need to make before they`re considered a playmaker..Just curious.

w/e

you consider Dwight Howard a facilitator right? cool.

Bosh will become LeBron James, definitely. My bad.

So you're saying post players can't be play makers?? Tim Duncan...Vlade Divac, Chris Webber....Shaq. Sabonis. The list goes on. Gasol.

Or are you saying Chris Bosh doesn't have the skill to be a facilitator??

I can't tell if you're saying it's a positional thing, or a personal thing with CB4. Either way I think you're wrong.
