Canada Article on Tim Leiweke

LINK
Interesting read on what Tim Leiweke's thinking and his vision.

A bit from the article about the Raptors:
Quote:
The Raptors, the only NBA team in Canada, should carry the same level of cross-country appeal as the Toronto Blue Jays, the only Canadian Major League Baseball team, he said. Much like Toronto FC, the Raptors’ mediocrity has eroded fan support.

“We need to be a lot better than we are right now, because right now we’re not very good,” Leiweke said. “We have 35 million people that are our audience. We own Canada, it is our home, our territory and our region and we have to act like it.”

“I’m not even sure we deserve Toronto,” he said.

Leiweke hired Masai Ujiri, the NBA’s reigning executive of the year for his work with the Denver Nuggets, to run the Raptors after firing Bryan Colangelo in June.

‘Suck to Be Good’

“I didn’t get along with the GM of the basketball team, so we brought in somebody who sees the world the same way I do,” Leiweke said.

Next year’s NBA draft is going to have many good players the Raptors may be interested in to build up a team over time.

The owners “are very aware that we may ultimately have to, excuse my English, suck to be good,” he said. “They understand they’re going to have to be patient there.”
"Suck to be good", I like it.

That, combined with the statements at UM's inroductory press conference about valuing assets and selling high rather than low, suggest that they are going to blow shit up. It makes me think they're just waiting for the right deals.

I hope were tanking. I don't mind waiting through a crappy few years.

bold words from TL, would be amazing if he could deliver, frankly, it would be outstanding if he could deliver half of that.

Got to love the tanking comments, I'm still afraid we won't be able to do it though. It will be very dangerous to wait until the season starts, because it's a double edged sword. What if we explode out of the gates (say we get lucky with an easy schedule) and we're something like 10 games over .500 in January - there will be a ton of pressure to keep the momentum ... On the other hand, we can't really initiate conversations if we want to sell high. We just have to hope some of the losers in FA will get desperate during the summer

definitely. It's not as linear as people see it. People think if we're not tossing away Gay and other assets for picks and cash, we're not tanking. Nein, we are looking for better deals than just a salary dump and a pick.

Let's get some facts straight here.

Source of the article?

He didn't fire Colangelo. The comments about not getting along with the GM?

It does not sound like TL.

Is this just a post from a disaffected member of the tank community?

Ya, I saw that after my post, but the comment about firing Colangelo isn't true, and I don't believe Lieweke would submarine his own credibility by making the " not getting along" comment after the lengthy press conference announcing Colangelo's extension. He's too smart to trip himself up like that, plus it's a Bloomberg article and their so full of it, even their eye's are brown.

Even though there is a source, that doesn't make the source article factual or correct, but it does make it usable to support an individual's point of view or agenda.

+1 to both. It's pretty clear there is "change" coming, MU himself said that fans may call what he's doing a tank but he prefers to call this time an evaluation period - read that direct quote from an article in the NY post but you think I can find it again? Bills correct IMO, nothing's blown up yet because the right deals haven't come along yet. BC was canned and anyone who thinks otherwise is naive but TL let him save face - most likely because of the elder Calengelo. I'm also believing that BC resigned because he was told what was going to happen and he didn't like it - basically TL came in and said he did a shitty GM job - not really a recipe for getting along.

It's a very bizarre piece, written by two guys that needed assistance from another, with a few short quotes from TL, and no sense of where they were pulled from. It's practically unreadable, with no sense of context whatsoever.

In the biggest tanking quote, the key phrase is we may ultimately have to. And when he's said that same sort of thing in the past, it was presented as one of the options, and that ultimately there were a few ways to approach things.

I agree with that statement, between the current players and the cap, there's not a lot of options moving forward with trades unless they're geared for a tank - unless they find a desperate GM but even then...

The options are not present immediately, but they will be there, if necessary. Everything I've heard is about looking closely at what will be necessary, through evaluation, and trying to get good value over time, not by making drastic changes in a hurry. Ultimately that may change. Or it may not.

It seems as though the quotes were pulled straight from his interview with Sid Sixeiro, somewhat out of context. I have to wonder if Bryan, being in NYC itch nothing to do, dropped by Bloomberg to visit some friends and dropped off a DVD labelled "Suck to be good". Ooh, the head office will hate this story. Take that Tim!

I don't believe the quotes ... it's dumb ass if he actually said those things and I didn't read him as a dumb ass ... stranger things have happened.

'Suck to Be Good’ ... these type of statements should be grounds for fines .... Given the reality of this perspective is out there (hopefully not stated by TL), NBA is really becoming a joke.
