Default Arsenalist: Mitchell content with roster (or so he says to himself)

I know it may seem like I'm kissing ass here and some might not agree with Arsenalist's sometime harsh criticism of Sam, but I have to say he's one of the better Raptor contributors out there today.

Here's part of his entry from today:

ďIím pleased with the team that we have. Bryan has done a great job of giving me a good team. We have a great group of guys that work hard. What we may lack athletically, I think we have a chance to make it up basketball-wise. We have got some pretty good basketball players.Ē

Iíd really like to believe that but I just donít think Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon and Jason Kaponoís collectively IQ can make up for Rashard Lewis breaking them down on the perimeter and posting them up on the next possession. Some things in life are pretty cut and dry and itís obvious that weíre going to suffer this year when we play 3ís that can break you down off the dribble. On the other end of the court we better hope that OíNeal and Bosh make up for the offense that Jamario Moon and Joey Graham donít provide. Itís the only way this rosterís equation makes sense. Mitchellís been handed a star player on one side but on the other, the teamís depth has been compromised. Depending on oneís coaching style a coach might prefer one over the other but I think in this case Mitchell hardly cares or knows any better. Heís like the blind man whose being offered a hand in crossing the street - for all you know he might be being led to his death!

So with the Raptors being less than the half the price of an Elliot Sptizer hooker away from being in luxury tax range ($1,100), will Colangelo and MLSE be willing to make a move if need be? Mitchell says thatís Colangeloís decision and we should wait and see.

ďThatís the decision that (Colangelo) and the upper management makes. He looks at our basketball team and if he feels at some point we need to go to the board and talk about other options, heíll do that. Right now, we havenít played a game. Nowís not the time to do that. Letís play some games first, see where we are.Ē

I agree. I so agree with this. Letís see what we can do with this team. Wait 10, 20 games and if we got enough letís stick with it but if it becomes evident that a shot in the arm is needed, letís not hesitate to make a deal even if it means paying some luxury tax and being unprofitable for a year. I guarantee you theyíll make the money back on the EC Champs t-shirts. Hell, Iíll buy 10 and give them away to you guys in contests.

I hat secrete there, but what does he expect Sam to say?

"Colangelo has given us what used to be a good center, but now we have 3 natural power forwards, a good pointguard, but nothing of any substance on the wings."

rashard lewis plays the 4, so he won't post our wings anytime soon ...
I think these articles are rubbish, because they are unrealistical. Does this guy believes that parker, moon, kapono and magette would make a more fearsome defending combo? Really? Or maybe he would have liked Bryan to trade TJ for Kobe or something.

And the same thing with playes like Outlaw - we're talking about trading half the team for a guy who was a decent 6th man on a mediocre team, shoots a poor percentage and is probably unable to defend the 2 better than Parker. Not too mention he's a larger, better shooting version of Jamario.

O'Neal has the chance to make us take a huge step forward, nobody else would have made any difference. Jose + Parker + Outlaw/Magette + Bosh + Rasho would be a worse team than our current roster, and we'd have the same issues with the bench, unless sombody considers Baston the cornestone of the second unit.

I know he plays the four but if you watched the Magic series none of his post-ups game against Chris Bosh. They came when the the Raptors switched on their PNRs to put Moon/Parker/Delfino on him.

Lewis is the exact type of player that the Raptors don't have an answer for - he's too quick for Bosh and too skilled and athletic for Moon, Parker or Joey to handle. Just an opinion, I could be dead wrong.

You're probably right about lewis, even though for the most part it was Sam decision to play Bosh at center to defend on Howard. Having JO would allow Bosh to stay on Lewis, and I'm pretty sure Bosh is quick enough to at least do a decent job on Lewis.

In any case, the reality is that:

1. that wasn't the major problem for us last season, not even close, not even in the Orlando series. The problem in that series was we couldn't defend Howard, Bosh was severely underpowered, and Rasho was useless on offense because he wasn't challenging D12 in any way.

And generally speaking, we were most lacking in interior defense and perimeter defense. The way our team is constructed, we will always be lacking in that area as we don't have athletes in the back-court. However, with an elite interior presence, you solve one problem completely, and partially alleviate the other one, since we will have somebody to be a strong second line of defense.

2. Of all the potential trades available this summer, the most debated was corey magetter. I would argue that a guy like Magetter would not solve either of the two defensive problems. Sure, he adds a second weapon on offense which would help in those close games. But we were a good offensive team, and while improvement is always good, it's a better approach to take care of the more stringent issues first.

So why blame Colangelo for making probably the best trade available, and then illustrate with our backcourt, which for the most part would have been the same, maybe worse (defensively), regardless of the trade scenario. If there was an option to trade TJ straight up for somebody like g. wallace or shane battier, then I could understand. Otherwise, this move was great in many ways (on paper at least): improves defense, rebounding, shot blocking, frees Bosh on offense, financially flexible - you name it. It doesn't fix ALL problems, but look around the league and tell me how many teams are perfect?
