Arsenalist: Competition in Summer 2010 Spending

Just a little blurb courtesy of Arsenalist (as well Tim Chisholm from TSN) regarding the summer of 2010 and some of the others that are going to have money to spend towards free agents and such. Needless to say, definitely interesting not only a couple teams around the association, but the Raptors too. :dancing:

Nice article, check it out. Interesting thought I had while reading it: You know how the Raptors are gearing up to make a run at free agents in Summer 2010? Well, the Thunder have one up on them. They only have Nick Collison under contract after that year and his salary is $6.75M - that’s it! Contrast this with the Raptors who will have $32.8M tied up (still very much under the cap). The question then becomes which is a more desirable city to play for and the answer should be obvious unless old Canadian prejudices still stand. Either way we’ll have some competition that summer and it wouldn’t even shock me to see us resign O’Neal to a smaller contract if he has two decent years with us. Others competing with us include Golden State, Atlanta, NJ and Minny.

When the Free Agency starts our #1 prority is Bosh.
After that we can look to get someone that can help him out especially if the raps don't sign JO. I am looking forward to the Raps signing a all-star player to help Bosh out

Lebron.

or Wade.

Then game on

Snooch 09-25-2008 07:28 PM

Wade all the way, or Joe.

Joe, Jose, Bosh, Kaps and Bargs/Jawaii/mabey JO would be ridonculous

I'd like to think that the Raps will get a superstar, but the financials don't look so promisng for stingy MLSE.

According to hoopshype.com (not the best source, but that's what's available)
Bosh $20M (if he resigns, it'll be for more than the $17M in his player option)
Jose $9M
Kapono $6.6M
Bargnani $8.5M
Superstar $22M (Raps will need to overpay someone to come to the great white north)

That's $66M for 5 players... Assuming the tax threshold is a generous $75M, the Raps would still need 4-5 role players and 2-3 end of benchers for $9M.

Will they go over the tax threshold? I wouldn't be surprised if the Raps sign two to three Tier 2 players, instead of the one Superstar.

I don't think 22M will be necessary..
And to re-sign Kapono, maybe less.

moremilk 09-25-2008 09:45 PM

there will be so many teams with cap space, overpaying will be a certainty ...

Kirby 09-25-2008 09:49 PM

22M would be for LeBron..I don't see anyone else passing 20M.

Gurk 09-25-2008 09:50 PM

What about D-Wade?

Kirby 09-25-2008 10:20 PM

Don't think more than 20.

Apollo 09-25-2008 11:50 PM

I don't know why Wade or James would come to Toronto.

Really, if we roll out Jose, Joe Johnson, Moon, Bosh, then a filler C of the Perkins or Diop type, with Kapono and Bargnani off the bench, that makes us a contender. I also wouldn't mind throwing a big contract at Chandler if other teams are misled by offensive numbers. Jose, Bosh, Chandler is a good enough big three to make noise.

Well I would assume Jamario will be under contract for between 3 and 4 per. Same with Hump, Jawaii, Ukic all for around 3 to 5 million range. Unless I am mistaken we would have Bird rights for Bosh and that would allow us to go well over tax to sign players and it would only thake about 17 per would bring in Joe.

If the team was contending for a championship they would go over the tax, without a doubt. They have in the past. MLSE will not spend money foolishly, but if they had a chance to sign a superstar/allstar to pair with superstar Bosh, allstar Jose and a solid supporting cast; anyone who doesnt think they would is foolish
