Arrow Armstrong: Some thoughts on the Raps

Quote:
1. ED DAVIS: 13 & 14 vs. Blake Griffin and the Clippers; outplayed him. 13 rebounds on Friday vs. the Blazers. Like what I'm seeing. He can block/alter shots and has good rebounding instincts. His offensive game is in its infancy right now with tons of room for growth. Overall, he's got a nice feel for what he's doing out there and better days are ahead for him. With all due respect to Reggie Evans (love him-tough dude), who is a free agent at end of the season, but when he returns, I'd have a problem with some of Davis' minutes on a 15-40 team going to Evans. Davis is a part of the future and they need to throw him out there to the wolves every night; good bad or indifferent.

2. JERRYD BAYLESS: Would really like to see him play more down the stretch of the season. The purpose of the New Orleans trade was to get red of Peja Stojakovic's expiring contract for cap purposes and bring in a young guard with potential in a situation where playing time was available on a losing team to get a good look see. Yes, he's been injured on and off and his play has been erratic (low percentage decisions and shot selection), yet I think it's critical to try to figure out if he can truly handle playing the point guard position in prime time minutes vs. 1st line players. Or is he more of a 2-guard (he is at this stage), who is small for that position and must become an incredible shooter/scorer to justify major minutes at that spot since he's giving up size on the defensive end? Raptors already know exactly what they have in Jose Calderon and even a Leandro Barbosa and it would be nice to see Bayless get a few more minutes as you try to figure out exactly what the plans are going to be for your young players. Growing pains exist here and the only way to get a better read and improvement is to challenge him to have to perform well and the 'right' way. He's got to be willing to buy into how the coaches want him to play. If not, his minutes will be erratic.

3. JOSE CALDERON: Has had a tough month of February so far with his shooting (15-55 from the field) yet I watch him play and he's taking good shots. In time, the shots will start to drop. He's too good a shooter to stay in this slump. In the meantime, he still runs the team well (10 assists and only 1 turnover vs. LA Clippers) and that's what counts for a point guard. His effort and willingness is there and maybe a few days off at the All-Star break will help him.

4. DEMAR DEROZAN: Mid-range game is improving. Shot selction is improving. Shooting is improving. Moving without the ball is improving. Defenisve awareness is improving. Confidence in his handle is improving. Taking care of the ball is improving. Lots to like from what I see. Long way to go, yes but I like his work ethic and approach right now. Wants to be a really good player and is willing to work for it.

Andrea Bargnani: Stop chucking. Play D. Get more than 3 rebounds. Decent game against LA.

I gave him some recognition with that last sentence. Two long-range clutch jumpers in the 4th.
