Arrow Armstrong on the Raps defence

Quote:
Gave up 78 points in the first half (39 per Quarter) on Tuesday. Jose Calderon didn't play and Andrea Bargnani barely did as well. Those two guys catch a lot of flak from fans in this area. I understand the gripes. Other culprits this time. This is a team problem. This organization has to look long and hard at the how's, why's, what's, when's, who's, etc. and get this rectified next season. The better teams in ALL sports have good balance and are two-way teams. Better talent is definitely needed across the board to be improved but the commitment/accountability aspect of this area have to dramatically improve. To have to watch the Denver & Golden State games recently and then first half of NY game is no fun when you're looking for a commitment to stop folks when your shots/offensive continuity are a bit off. Offence is always a bit erratic on certain nights for most teams. Defensive commitment is a Hhabit and an all-time thing. I'm tired of being asked about it and talking about it. Should be and has to be better. I'm sure it will be a major point of emphasis for Bryan Colangelo and Jay Triano to look at this off-season. Gotta improve!!

It's easier to have a scapegoat than look at reality

the thing is Bargnani sucks on defense or is bad at rebound cuz he doesn't try or put in the effort.
whereas jose's and other players defense on this team, may be in reality, just truly sucks
i refuse to believe that when Bargnani gives even 90% the most double doubles he gets over an entire season is 1

What's the difference between sucking by not giving effort or sucking just because you sucks? Just that fans are more pissed in the first case.

which is why theres a valid reason for many fans using Bargs as a scapegoat for the teams bad defense. because he could be better whereas jose (just using him as an example) can't get any better

I agree, no more Bargnani allowing players to do layups in his face
hopefully, james johnsons hard foul on joey to prevent an easy layup/dunk last night becomes and example for the rest of the team

Bargnani is never going to be able to defend. He will always be a weak link. Jose will always be slowed by his body breaking down and be another weak link for about half of any schedule. The team just needs to give up with them, as starters certainly. The rest of these guys need to be able to make the commitment for 48 minutes. But the same thing gets said year after year. For the last two years we've seen this team look for early offense and get burned in transition and drag their asses at different points.

If defense was an absolute priority and point of emphasis, it should be fixed at this point. The fact that it isn't is something of an indictment of Colangelo. And there are no excuses about the difficulties of finding players that want to come here. If anything that sort of reality should help propel a GM in the direction of winning ugly with defense and building from there.

It all begins and ends with Bryan's brand of exciting basketball. I still hope that what Jack is preaching takes shape. I think there have been hints that Bryan has seen the need to go in a different direction, so I can remain a little hopeful. But for me what Jack is preaching has been clear for quite some time now. I like that he seems to be at the end of his tether. Makes me think I won't be alone going crazy with this team.

If you are labeling Bargs with "Franchise Player" and not holding him accountable for any defense, expect the rest to follow.

KG holds all players accountable for defense and it improved over night.

No, he isnt the only culprit, but if the team is not going to bust their asses to cover for the "star".

I think to a pretty remarkable extent they have busted their asses, and yes they do so to cover for the guy. But it doesn't bring results, and that's going to mean it's not always going to be there. It's not going to be a habit. Good habits absolutely must be shared. You get that and when guys bust their asses as a whole, the results will follow.

4 games left in the season and they need to start learning now? How about if they started earlier, say 77 games ago?
