Armstrong: Fans need to be patient with DeRozan

Quote:
There is lots of concern in Toronto Raptor Land with regard to the first 14 games of DeMar De Rozan's NBA career.

My recommendation at this stage: Chill out!

Yes, he looks like a rookie and yes,he's inconsistent.

While he's got a long way to go, I wouldn't consider sending him to the bench yet.

Here are 3 reasons why I say to just relax and allow the process to develop more before any changes are made.

1. Upside/Potential: The two most overused words today in sports, which gets lots of GM's and Coaches fired because fans expect guys to PRODUCE based upon a few flashes that the player show yet it's not there consistent level of ability yet and the folks involved around the player get blamed due to unrealistic expectations.

DeRozan has upside and potential and the only way it's going to get tapped into is to throw him to the wolves every night and let him experience and learn from the ups and downs of playing in the NBA each night.

I like his coach-ability, attitude, work-ethic and he has the tools to be a good player in the league in time. In a world of expectations/instant gratification that doesn't make folks too happy to wait and experience the growing pains of what is truly necessary.

I would send him to the bench at some point though if it continues. Start Beli or Wright. But give him more time and maybe the light bulb will flicker. Last years in College he started off slow and then went off the rest of the year once he got acclamated. The NBA is a whole different level obviously, but i say give him more time.

Overall i like what i've seen for the most part. The fact that he's not going off and averaging 15pts per game is a good thing in a way, it means he's not the main option and we're pretty deep and we're not relying on a rookie to carry us ala the Bucks.

I'd rather Triano give him MORE minutes against bench guys than LESS minutes against starters. If that means sending him to the bench, so be it. He hasn't done anything to warrant less playing time, I feel he's actually earned the right to more playing time. Fact is he's the first round draft pick and if the organization is going to invest time and money in this kid with hopes he'll take the team to the next level, the it's silly not to get him more burn.

He played 17 minutes yesterday, most of which were in the first half, when Vince was struggling. Coincidence?

Doug Smith's thoughts:

Quote:
DeRozan’s struggling mightily

We all knew there would be times when the kid would look a bit overwhelmed and out of place during games this year but, seriously, I don’t think anyone expected it to be this often, this early.

The numbers are mostly awful: A point, a rebound and four fouls n 17 minutes yesterday; seven and seven against Miami on Friday is okay but two points and no rebounds in Utah is bad, the 17 points in Denver’s a fraud because most of them came in garbage time and he was invisible with six and two in Phoenix and a non-factor against the Clippers.

But more than the numbers, it’s the “other” stuff he’s not getting done.

There’s very little energy, his defence is lax and while there seems to be effort there, it looks wasted at time. All those little things, like running, rebounding, setting good screens, aren’t happening often enough.

I don’t think it’s time to make any drastic changes or anything – I wouldn’t even think about altering anything until at least 20 games into a season – but they need him to work harder and be better.

yep.

agreed.

Man hindsight sucks. Jennings instead of DeRozan and wow. Jose is a back up, and this team is above .500.

Guess thats how they shake out some days.

Struggling mightily is a huge overstatement.

He's the 5th option on the court, he's doing fine. He isn't going to have the opportunity to fill up the stat sheet this year, so he shouldn't be judged on statistics.

Sillyness.

Although he did struggle mightily staying in front of Vince.

Yet that isn't mentioned in his troubles, it's his one point and one rebound...?!?!?!

+1000000.

I was wondering why the fuck he was sitting on the bench the whole fucking second half.

i thought he did a great job of staying in front of vince, especially in the first half. sure, derozan got beat a few times, but promarily vince torched us when we didn't have derozan on him.

+1. When did Vince really light us up? In the second half when DeRozan was on the bench.

He doesnt get any touches on offence. People shouldnt be expecting more than 5-6 ppg in 18-20 minutes because he never touches the ball. Its hard to get going as a player if youre not involved on offence.

And mostof the time vs VC it wasnt even his fault VC got to the rack, it was Bosh not rotating off of Howard on screen rolls.

Ok stop.

Just stop.

DD was terrible.

Vince shook him at will from the tip. He missed a tonne of wide open shots. It wasn't even a little close.

What to expect?

Hard to say, I have no plans to call it a career on the poor kid just yet, but lets be honest here, he has been terrible more often than he has been good.

He was matched against the guy he told us he was gonna make us forget.

Maybe he was scared, or nervous, but whatever the case, he was certainly a non-factor.

What do you expect though? Vince can get his shot off on any player in the league any time he wants. That's why SVG said it's such a luxury to have him.

I havent seen many people on this forum, or really anywhere else in the media ripping derozan. We all knew he'd take time, and no one is jumping the gun and not being patient with him.

Jennings has played against Philly, Detroit, Chicago, Minny, Knicks, Warriors, Charlotte, Memphis, Nets. So wait til the season is done and they have the bitch part of their schedule and we have our easy schedule before you jump on the Jennings bandwagon.

Ummm... if people are expecting a ROOKIE to come in and guard guys like VC, Wade and 'Bron effectively then they're on crack.

10-yr vets can't guard these guys.... no way in hell that DD is going to be able to.

I think he's done a nice job all things considered.

He certainly doesn't force his offense and he gives it his all on defense. What more can you ask for at this point?

Just give the kid some time to grow.

Demar Derozan

Ceiling: Trevor Ariza, Travis Outlaw

Floor: Kirk Snyder, Rodney Carney

If people expect him to be the next Vince, Igoudala, Stephen Jackson, it aint going to happen. The reason why the kid doesn't touch the ball enough in the offense is because he can't dribble, he can't create his own offense.
