Smile Arguments For Being Raptor fans

As Raptor fans, I think we have all been through it.

You and a couple of people start discussing basketball. You proudly announce your support for being a Raptor fan.

Everyone turns and starts laughing at you. "Raptors suck", "How do you stand watching them", "Haha You are an idiot for supporting them", "They will never win", etc. etc.

After so many years of watching them lose, what are legitimate arguments for being a Raptors fan still?

NOTE: This thread is not meant to bash the Raptors, or to encourage people from stop supporting them. I just wanted to collect people's reasons for still supporting this team.

Canada's team. I'm not a bandwagoner. Fun to watch. Great potential. Then I follow up with "Do you even watch basketball?"

TBH, most of the people that laugh when I say that are Leaf fans which in turn has me say you haven't got a leg to stand on. They usually half heartedly agree, chuckle and that's the end of that.

I thought it was very impressive what the team did in only around 6 seasons. Reaching the semi's (and one shot from conference finals) if one or two moves were/weren't made during that 5th season, we could have easily had a championship caliber team. (like keeping t-mac)

I understand the argument of being born in Toronto. I also play the hometown card. I also called some people bandwagoners for supporting Heat, Lakers, Thunder, etc.

However, they say that the hometown argument is BS. Their claim is that they watch "real basketball" by watching the best teams. According to them, I am not a fan of the game because I only support my hometown team. Since they support the top teams, they claim that they are a fan of the game because they watch premier basketball.

Not sure how to reply to that, other than saying you are not loyal to a team and therefore have never been through a team during their down years.

Someone actually said they only watch the best teams? Do they watch the hometown hockey team? lol

They would only watch hockey during Game 7 of the NHL Finals LOL

I love how everyone turns into an expert during the finals and never follow the league during the season

Sadly for the most part that is never the case. Bandwagoners usually have no clue about anything basketball related

Well, you know what they say about Toronto. It's a leaf city not a hockey city.

That's an extremely closed minded approach. NBA [/b]is[/b] premier basketball. It's the best league in the world.

And it's easy to cheer for a winner, takes integrity to stand by a bad team and cheer for so long. What are they going to do when LeBron leaves in FA? If Kobe comes back and is shit? They won't stand by that team. To me, their fair weather fans who don't really know anything about the sport.

It's hard to argue against a band-wagoner that actually knows the game.

One of my friends, is a close Spurs "fan" since the early 2000s (hmm wonder why). He has a point when he argues against supporting the Raptors. They've been shit for the past 3 seasons, and they have been mediocre for a long time. In 15+ years in the league, we've lost countless star players and never made it past the second round.

It's hard to justify being a Raptor fan at this time.

It's hard being an expansion team, 18 years isn't long at all. Ask him what's wrong about supporting the team you choose?

Not really. I've been a fan from the beginning and have hung in there, the end.

I agree with all your points, don't get me wrong.

Some people would argue that bandwagoning/cheering for multiple teams is justifiable. The NBA is by far the best league in the world. They just want to watch the best of the best every single night.

It's a tough debate because they can also say hometown supporters are narrow-minded. Especially for a weaker team like the Raptors, they can argue that we choose to follow bad basketball over superstar teams.

I know some people that don't support any teams. They just watch games, and want the team that played the better game to win. They can argue that they are the most open-minded because they are just watching for the sport of the game.

All legitimate arguments if you think about it.

It's funny, even when the Raptors are struggling I have access to all the best teams and also watch them. Technology these days is a wonderful thing. I can watch the Raps one night and OKC vs LAL the next. Best of both worlds.

It's easy being a basketball fan in LA. You have two teams to support. When one goes wrong, the other goes right.

For the record though, I am still a loyal Raptors fan. It's been frustrating these couple years, but I hope they can contend for a championship soon. I'm tired of being embarrassed at the end of seasons with predictions.
