Default Amnestying Amir: Would you consider it?

Interesting question

Quote:
As Iíve stated, I love Amirís hustle, his highly efficient offence, his work on the boards and his athletic defence. From what I can gather from listening and watching him talk, Iím sure I would like him as a person too. But in the cut-throat world of professional sports, where winning should be the main focus, being a good guy who works hard canít be what carries you throughout your career.

At some point, Amir is going to have to finally break out if he wants to justify his fairly large contract for a role player.

Iím rooting for Amir, and hoping that his play ensures we never have to think about this possibility, but itís not fair to quickly throw the amnesty option out there for some players, and totally ignore the elephant in the room that is Amir Johnsonís contract.

If Colangelo and the Raptors do end up using their amnesty clause option, can you really find a more worthy candidate right now?

Definitely not, it would be a waste of an asset. Amir has value in this league, plenty of teams would love to have a warrior like Amir battling in the paint, contending teams especially. Cutting him for nothing would be the wrong choice in my opinion. If we're looking to move Amir, at the very least we could garner a draft pick.

Why?
I wonder if the author really understands how the amnesty works ...

No. And unless he continues the way he's going the rest of the season, it would be stupid to consider it. If the summer comes and you don't want him and no decent is there then i guess you consider it. But i think he'll snap out of it.

It kills me how quickly people turn on players. It's crazy. A month ago this would have been crazy to even mention.

I don't disagree DK, but let's not assume he has immediate value around the league. He may not actually have as much value as we think (I don't think we get a draft pick for him).

He's still foul prone out there and when you compare him to the rest of the league at his position he's in the top 1/2 but I don't know if he's in the top 1/3. So is he a bench guy or depth guy that has a slightly too rich (slightly imo) contract? Especially with AB's development right now and Val possibly coming over, I'm having a hard time to see his future role on this team.

It's a good question to ask.

Why would we amnesty him when we could trade him in future deals?

if it creates the room necessary to sign a difference-maker to this team, no problem. anyone can go if it makes the team better.

i like what amir brings. i'd rather not get rid of him, but my opinion is the same as it is for Calderon - if you can get a free agent that makes this team much better, anyone is on the table. if...

the only difference is Calderon is more expensive and his position requires a more significant upgrade. amir as a $6.5 mil backup is certainly palatable.

Yep. If not here, I may have read it elsewhere. It makes some sense.

I'm trying to understand the Amir love here.

Maybe, but it's not like Amir's contract is the only questionable one in the locker room. Jose and Kleiza come to mind, although if Kleiza continues to improve his contract becomes more and more reasonable.

My only problem in moving Amir is the question of Ed Davis' future in Toronto. Nobody knows if he's going to stay past his rookie contract. When you've got a player who openly likes the city and the team in Amir, it's definitely hard to let him go, especially when you can see that he's giving 110% every given night. I just don't want to see Davis leave town a few years after we move Amir.

i think he was referring to then, a time where he would be a backup, because right now, he starts, and even when AB comes back, unless davis improves drmatically and gains 25 pounds, then i still see him starting. next season, val is still raw, or at least is predicted to be, so amir may still start over him. only by 2013-2014 can i see him being a bench player.

This. People are wanting DeRozan's head and now Amir's?
They don't have much to work with, it's not even their faults. DeRozan's clearly not ready to do this himself, and Amir is having personal problems right now.

Similar to what Trane mentioned. If you get a free agent that can fill in as a big I wouldn't even hesitate to amnesty him. Heck if the Raptors draft a big in the draft this summer I'd amnesty his behind. I've come to the realization the only asset on this team I'd keep around is Bargs. The rest could go fly a kite as far as I'm concerned. Of course you have to field a team so might as well keep these guys on the roster for now until something better comes along.

When Bargs plays he's dynomite most nights. HE'S NOT A CENTER. HE'S 6'9 FOR GOODNESS SAKES! Ed is actually taller than him, Amir bulkier. Play him at center with Bargs however, and most nights he plays productive.
