Amir Johnson

What do you suggest we do with Amir? He's one of my favourite Raptors, but he seems to be the odd man out in most situations. Ed Davis is obviously the power forward of the future, and the Raptors brass have expressed their interest in signing a bigman, and with Val coming over the following season (and assuming Bargs stays), our bigman rotation will probably look something like:

PF: Bargnani/Davis/Amir
C: Val/FA/Amir

Personally, I would love to give Amir significant minutes, but I just can't see how we can without perhaps getting in the way of the progression of our young(er) bigmen.

So what do you guys think? Free Amir? Or keep him around?

EggsToTheBBQ 06-27-2011 01:23 PM

Wait until Val arrives and then make the decision.

A lot can happen between now and then.

I like Amir a lot, and he's not too expensive. So, if he can play well as a role player off the bench (3rd/4th big) then there's no reason he shouldn't be kept around.

'trane 06-27-2011 01:24 PM

we definitely need him for 2011-12. after that we can look at what to do.

Carlos Danger 06-27-2011 01:28 PM

Amir>Bargnani IMO.

Obviously not as offensively skilled as Andrea but he's only 24, can block shots and rebound the ball. The Raptors are going for the defensive state of mind and he could be a key piece off the bench.

powerfulpanda 06-27-2011 01:29 PM

its too early to trade him, and if anything i want to see bargnani gone.
PF: ed davis/ amir
C: JV/alabi
assuming everyone develops according to our hopes then our bigs rotation is set for years to come
if the alabi experiment fails, amir can play some back up C, its not like he's new to it

finstock 06-27-2011 01:30 PM

Keep him. He's a good 7th or 8th man on a quality team. Hopefully we reach that quality team benchmark sooner rather than later.

cloudnine 06-27-2011 01:33 PM

I would keep him if we're able to trade Bargnani - he can backup Ed Davis.

The fact that he's clearly worked so hard to improve the weak parts of his game - his midrange jumper is incredibly solid now - I'd like to see him take more of a role next year offensively to see what he can do.

It seems like he could run the pick and pop really well.

LKeet6 06-27-2011 01:54 PM

i love amir but do share original poster's concerns. Amir deserves/needs big minutes. I would be happy to see him and ed pretty much share minutes but then there's barg. Let's not consider val at this point. if we sign a FA C things still get quite congested. We could maybe just about make that work, with alabi and/or maybe dorsey as the low mins guys. I think if amir became a low mins guy it would stunt his progress and although he's not really the moaning type he would probabaly become unhappy.

simply put i would rather keep amir than barg but that's more coz i really like amir. great attitude last year and some signs he can be a big contributor.

RAPMAN 06-27-2011 02:08 PM

What message are we gonna send to the younger players. Let's keep the player who only want to take jump shots and puts no effort on defense and rebounding, and get rid of the hardest working player who consistently gives 100% every night.

Gurk 06-27-2011 02:28 PM

Amir is awesome. He isn't going anywhere this season atleast. We shall see what happens this upcoming season adn BC will decide from there.

jrob23 06-27-2011 02:48 PM

id keep Amir over Bargnani all day

Ed and Amir being oversized> Bargnani and one of the two being out hustled.

IDK about that. He has developed a great mid range open jumper and he's great at finishing at the rim. He was like top 3 in fg% in the league last year and #1 for a while. On top of that he's really improved (dramatically) on his FT shooting. He easily had more offense than Ed.

box92 06-27-2011 05:36 PM

no need to trade him

Admiral 06-27-2011 06:02 PM

keep, only trade if something better comes around

Bankiz 06-27-2011 06:46 PM

How the hell can you think of that even if you hate him ?

No trade !
with demar their are the real core of this team. IF demar run the show, amir is the giant whom hold the building.
the only one inure who play more than he should, to care and take care of this team, and the need of some big guys who puts effort.
even if you consider he can be deal more quickly than barg, i would prefer keep barg for the rest of his contract than send amir away.
and only stars in the sky know how i want barg gone...

when you have a guy like that who wants to play here, and is really happy about playing for the raptors, and living in toronto, i don't think, with his abilities, you want to give him a sign that you want him out. not good press.

js12 06-27-2011 07:03 PM

You know there won't be a trade when Bankiz says so. :p

Aamir 06-27-2011 08:26 PM

BC has to let go of one of the bigs before JV comes, otherwise it will effect atleast one of the big's minutes and development drastically. Hopefully it's Bargs. He should still have good trade value.

Thug 06-27-2011 09:27 PM

Who are the idiots who wanna keep him?

Someguy again 06-27-2011 09:36 PM

the dude hustles for rebounds every game something our starting center wont do, how are we idiots for wanting to keep him?

Windex 06-27-2011 10:07 PM

I think we need Amir's energy in Casey's new system
and I like the fact that he rebounds the basketball unlike someone else:cookie:
