Amico: League-wide interest in DD

Quote:

One GM told FOX Sports Ohio there is also strong league-wide interest in Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan -- but seemingly nothing that would entice DeRozanís current employer to take the plunge.

If he's playing well, but our record isn't quite good say 2 months in, I could see him being moved. Said it this summer, he's one of our prime candidates to be moved. Him and Amir imo. Ross won't get us much, Lowry is expiring, Gay's contract is far too big.....

TORaptor4Ever 10-23-2013 04:14 PM

Other than JV @ C I'd say that SG is the one spot that we seem to have locked down.

Probably one of the last guys that I'd want to trade.... and I never thought I'd say that about DD lol.

bjjs 10-23-2013 04:42 PM

I've been saying this for a few years now.

ZanTheMan 10-23-2013 04:42 PM

If there's a league wide interest in DD it's probably cause he's good and we'd best just keep him... Same goes for Amir.

carp 10-23-2013 05:17 PM

so nothing that would make us want to trade him.... so there can't be that much interest.... which makes sense given his contract.

His contract is fine imo, far from a deterrent to trading for him.

you're allowed your opinion.... but I'm saying his league wide value isn't likely that high either. He's a limited player, there are many in the same tier. For some to suggest he has his position on lockdown seems like settling. Maybe other teams are interested, but it's likely for a player that has equally plateaued or stagnated. Weak handles, mediocre shooting for his position, bad defense, but he can score on isos until the defense intensifies.

I'm not the biggest DD fan trust me, but he has decent value and he could improve some of those aspects. We'll see

fully agree he can improve... but if you were to trade him now, which I feel will be his peak value if he doesn't significantly improve those areas, you still won't get that much unless you take back big salary. He's a solid fourth player on a decent team.

I could easily say the same about 90% of the wing players in the league right now if you're looking to nitpick.

A couple articles here that you may want to read... I took the liberty of posting some snippets.

Quote:

"That's why it's so hard when people talk about, ‘This guy's going to come in and take over the league,'" Casey said. "No, it doesn't happen overnight. It's a four-year process, a five-year process when you get a guy out of college. It's very rare a guy comes in and dominates and knows what it takes to dominate because he doesn't have life experiences to go through it. And that's where DeMar is and it's good to see."

Toronto's seen incremental improvement out of DeRozan over his first four years. The knock has been that his added strength and skills haven't had a profound impact on his per-minute production. If you've been watching all along, though, it's impossible not to have noticed how his game and his confidence have grown to this point.

"I definitely feel more comfortable than ever," DeRozan said.

“When you play in a league so long, you start understanding little things,” DeRozan said after the game. “You start understanding the floor, the space that you have. Only so many players can go here or there. You understand every rotation. You understand where your help is. You understand so much. Once you see it so much, it becomes second nature. That’s one thing that’s happening for me.”

People are starting to take note... and the LAST thing you want to do is deal a guy and have him become an all-star the very next season.

who is taking note? Casey and Derozan? He's slow-footed, focused heavily on offense, doesn't move particularly well without the ball, gets much of his scoring off of isos.... but yes, people have noticed. Casey is talking up his player, means very little. Let's see Casey get him to defend, given that it is his supposed strength.

I'll go read those though.... but from the snippets, I've read nothing I haven't heard before. He does look more confident though, ever-building too, given the green light he's been given his entire career.

I just don't think we should be afraid to move a player that has a strong chance to not live up to the big deal we gave him. If potential is what we're hyping, let's sell on that note too.

If we're afraid of him becoming an all-star, we may be fearful for years to come.

seems very likely we're gonna trade gay. dunno what we'll get for him, but think he'll be traded, for a play-off chaser. someone like cavs maybe, who don't have a SF.

therefore we shouldn't trade DD. don't wanna empty both wing positions. DD is a good player as long as he's 2nd, preferably 3rd option.

who becomes the small forward if Gay is traded? Daye? Novak? Acy? Fields?

He's also become stronger, developed a decent post game, has improved court vision and gets to the line more.

There are VERY few guards in this league who can dominate on both ends of the court. If we're going to ask him to make that a staple of his game then we'd better be sure that we don't need his points.... because they'll definitely take a hit.

Agreed. We don't need his points. His improved court vision is relative, though the other improvements are tangible. For his price we can do better. Especially if we aren't getting a solid lottery pick any time soon

I see Rudy being moved before demar.. IF we're going that tank route.

I don't. But one of them is gone unless the team performs. The only other trading chips we have are Lowry, Amir, JV (not likely going anywhere).

fantapoppa 10-23-2013 07:32 PM

I know it's just preseason, but Demar has shown signs of improved confidence and efficiency compared to last season. The growth of JV and Demar are the reasons I'm excited to watch basketball this season, while Rudy gay hasn't shown much difference other then increased weight.

I realize that before Rudy came to toronto, Demar was constantly shut down offensively by other teams, and having gay here opened up a lot of space for him to work with.

Yes Derozan doesn't provide much during games where he is shut down offensively, and that's his weak point. At this point of his career, he is not good enough to be 1st or 2nd option on a good team.
But if he can translate his confidence into higher FG% and more assists & FTAs, he can be a good bargain for the contract we gave him.

Not to mention the passion he has for the city of Toronto

LX 10-23-2013 08:46 PM

The improvement this dude has made since Triano left has been steady, consistent, and fulfilling of his promise in a step by step fashion. If anybody is going to continue to assess his play based on the week handles and slow footedness and poor defense has their head stuck up their ass after binging on a meal from 2009. Just take a really good shit and you'll feel much better. Make sure you let out all the gas as well.

And no i'm not saying he's the next coming of Kobe. Don't send those nasty farts this way. There are plenty of teams that would love to find a way to get this guy. Doc wanted him this summer. Zach Lowe noted the interest league-wide in his last piece. He is still young, continues to get better, and has always played hard and looked to compete. If he gets a taste of winning in this league, watch out. It could make the Rudy acquisition look worthwhile, and then make Rudy look expendable soon enough.
